Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in crowded metropolitan areas, Japan's temple precincts preserve not only architecture, but the garden traditions of earlier centuries as well. To step into a temple garden is, in effect, to tread the paths of Japanese aesthetic history. This time travel experience is not unlike venturing into a medieval church situated in a modern Western metropolis. The recognized religious traditions survive in the layout and rationale of Japan's gardens: Shintō, Buddhist, and Confucian. This book explores the distinct priorities and vocabularies of these traditions as expressed in the elements of garden design, historically tracing their shared features and their interactions at particular sites. Amply illustrated, it orients the reader to the different functions of gardens, such as whether they are to be looked at or walked in.

Book Synopsis The Gardens of Japan by : Jiro Harada
Download or read book The Gardens of Japan written by Jiro Harada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2005. In Japan, the garden is considered a barometer of the nation's prosperity and character, and different periods in history have produced different kinds of gardens. Harada gives brief summaries of them all, including the Edo period (1603-1867), when professional gardeners first took over the design of gardens from priests, and reveals a few of the subtle distinctions that the Japanese use to distinguish between different kinds of gardens that appear identical to Western eyes. As a reaction to all things foreign, the gardens of the Meiji Restoration period (1868-1912), on which the book concentrates, revived the earlier simpler cha-no-yu style of garden heavily influenced by Zen. A special feature of the book is rare period photographs of famous parks and the now vanished gardens of Japanese aristocrats.

Book excerpt: Hidden in the residential area adjacent to Phantom Lake, Bellevue Washington, is a jewel, a private Japanese Garden called the Seko Garden belonging to Joan and Roy Seko. Conceived and designed by Kaichi Seko, Roy's father, in the 1950's, the garden is now in danger. I have come to understand that the estate must be sold and the future of the garden is uncertain. The story of this garden begins with the birth of Kaichi in 1896 in the Gifu Prefecture of Japan. Gifu Prefecture is home to a number of outstanding gardens including Kokeisan Eihoji Temple Garden by Muso Sosekiand Zenshouji Temple Gardens. When he immigrated to the United States in 1920, Kaichi carried with him the legacies of these fine gardens. He began work in the restaurant business in Seattle but his career was interrupted by World War II and his internment in the Camp at Minidoka, Idaho.
