Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new edition of Renewable Energy Systems, globally recognized renewable energy researcher and professor, Henrik Lund, sets forth a straightforward, comprehensive methodology for comparing different energy systems’ abilities to integrate fluctuating and intermittent renewable energy sources. The book does this by presenting an energy system analysis methodology. The book provides the results of more than fifteen comprehensive energy system analysis studies, examines the large-scale integration of renewable energy into the present system, and presents concrete design examples derived from a dozen renewable energy systems around the globe. Renewable Energy Systems, Second Edition also undertakes the socio-political realities governing the implementation of renewable energy systems by introducing a theoretical framework approach aimed at understanding how major technological changes, such as renewable energy, can be implemented at both the national and international levels. Provides an introduction to the technical design of renewable energy systems Demonstrates how to analyze the feasibility and efficiency of large-scale systems to help implementers avoid costly trial and error Addresses the socio-political challenge of implementing the shift to renewables Features a dozen extensive case studies from around the globe that provide real-world templates for new installations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What makes a business model successful? In this book the roots of business models are traced to the concept of the business idea which was popularized by researchers in the 1960s and 1970s. The business idea stresses the importance of conformance between the market and the product system, as well as between the product system and the internal features of the firm. A distinguishing feature of the book is how it links elements of business models to key concepts in strategic management research and practice, such as the customer offering, activity systems and strategic resources. It also uses theory and research to explore ways in which the contextual element of business models may be understood and acted upon. One chapter explores the common denominators of good strategies. For example, it is argued that good strategies enable realization of objectives, express choices, and build on strengths. Business Models and Strategy is intended as a companion in the field for reflective practitioners and as an integrative text for postgraduate students with a good grasp of strategy."

Book excerpt: The growing body of research on business models draws upon a range of sub-disciplines, including strategic management, entrepreneurship, organization studies and management accounting. Business Models: A Research Overview provides a research map for business scholars, incorporating theoretical and applied perspectives. It develops the field of business model research by offering a critique of the field as it has developed to date and provides a guide for future research and theorization. The research performed as a basis for this book improves and extends prior subjective and less-documented work by using a scientific approach to identifying impactful research. The book argues that business model research is a mature field and that future research should focus on performative and ecosystem-based contributions, with the timely identification of four distinct stages of business model research. The study here provokes a new set of research questions, which are addressed in the concluding passages of Chapters 5-8, as a point of departure for those researching business models. This book is essential primary reading for scholars and practitioners of business models who are looking to seek out new knowledge and build new perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to relate the single-point probability of a meteorological event to the probability of its occurrence along a line or in an area of given size or fraction of the area. To make the problem tractable it was limited to modelling the probability estimates of the minimum or maximum condition along a line or in an area, or of the maximized minimum in a fraction of the area. In the absence of an analytical solution a Monte Carlo technique, applied to a Gaussian variable, was used to obtain answers that are presented graphically. Two models are described, one shown to be effective with macroscale events; the other, and more interesting model, is shown to be effective with the mesoscale phenomena of quantitative precipitation in areas ranging from a few hundred square kilometers to more than 50,000 sq. km. These include the differences between quark and gluon jets from LEP at CERN, the search for the disoriented chiral condensate at Fermilab, the existence (or not) of the quark-gluon plasma and the large rapidity gaps in Hera physics. In many different experimental situations, the subject of multiparticle dynamics remains alive.Main speakers: J Antos, B J May, J D Bjorken, P Sondereger, I Tserruya, R C Hwa, R Ugoccioni, A Giovannini, C Grupen, A de Angelis, G Thompson, J Kwiecinski, B Andersson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ANTONIS BOTINIS 1. 1 Background This introduction provides essential information about the structure and the objects of study of this volume. Following the introduction, fourteen papers which represent current research on intonation are organised into five thematic sections: (I) Overview of Intonation, (II) Prominence and Focus, (III) Boundaries and Discourse, (IV) Intonation Modelling, and (V) Intonation Technology. Within the sections the papers are arranged thematically, although several papers which deal with various aspects of intonation and prosody are basically intersectional. As the title indicates, "Intonation: Analysis, Modelling and Technology" is a contribution to the study of prosody, with major emphasis on intonation. Intonation and tonal themes are thus the central object of the volume, although temporal and dynamic aspects are also taken into consideration by a good number of papers. Although tonal and prosodic distinctions have been dealt with throughout man's literate history with reference to the study of language, for example by classical philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, it is in recent decades that we have witnessed the most fertile growth in intonation studies, as with experimental phonetics and speech technology in general. As Rossi (this volume) points out, intonation research really began to blossom in the sixties with a multi fold increase in prosodic studies, reflected in contributions to the International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS), and in the international literature.

Book excerpt: The fractal structure of multiplicity fluctuations ('intermittency') in high energy multiparticle production is discussed with experimental results from fixed target and collider experiments on e+e-, p, hadronic and nuclear collisions. Theoretical investigations concern the selfsimilar dynamics of particle cascades and quark-gluon-plasma as well as the structure of particle correlations
