Henry comes across as an ardent and passionate love. The letters smolder, even in this Kindle digtal edition. The attraction that Henry must have had in his life comes though far more than any biography of him.

These two editions differ considerably from each other, and still more so from the transcripts here given, which are taken from the edition printed at Paris by M. Meon, who held a situation in the Manuscript Department of the Bibliothèque de Roi. The fifth and thirteenth, however, which are not comprehended in the Vatican collection, are supplied from Hearne's work. Of the seventeen letters of which the series consists, eight are written in English and nine in French. They appear to have been written after Anne Boleyn had been sent away from court, in consequence of reports injurious to her reputation, which had begun to be publicly circulated. Her removal indeed was so abrupt that she had resolved never to return. The king soon repented his harshness, and strove to persuade her to come back; but it was a long time, and not without great trouble, before he could induce her to comply. Her retirement did not take place before the month of May, 1528; this is proved by a letter from Fox, Bishop of Hereford, to Gardiner, Bishop of Winchester, dated the 4th of May, in that year, in which the writer, who had just returned from Rome, whither he had been sent to negotiate the king's divorce, gives an account of his landing at Sandwich on the 2nd, of his arrival on the same night at Greenwich, where the king then was, and of the order he received from him to go to the apartments of Anne Boleyn, which were in the Tiltyard, and inform her how anxious he had been to hasten the arrival of the legate, and how much he was rejoiced by it. This letter, formerly in the collection of Harley, Earl of Oxford, is now at Rome.

This alternative was at last agreed, though it remained sometime in sus pense, because the president of the parliament of Paris doubted, whether the marriage be tween the king and her mother, being his broth er's wife, were good or no. The bishop of Tarbe made the same objection, and renewed it to theking's ambassadors in France, as appears by King Henry's speech to the mayor and citizens of London, concerning his scruples, where he says, When our ambassadors were last in France and motion was made that the duke of Orleans should marry our said daughter, one of the chief counsellors to the French king said, It were well done to know whether she be the king of England's lawful daughter, or not; for well known it is, that he begat her on his broth er's wife, which is directly contrary to God's law, and his precept. That this counsellor was the Bishop of Tarbe, is afirmed by the bishop of Bayonne, in the account he gives of this speech to the court of France, in a letter dated the 27th of November, I 528; yet this very bish op of Tarbe was afterwards advanced to be a cardinal, and was so far from retracting his opinion, that, when he was cardinal of Grande mont, in a letter dated the 27th of March, I 530, he writes to the French court, That he had served the Lord Rochford (anne Boleyn's fa ther) all he could, and that the pope had three several times said to him in secret, that he wished the marriage had been already made in England, either by the legate' s dispensation, or otherwise, provided it was not done by him.
