Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Journal of Medicine and Surgery, 1840, Vol. 1 The basis of the Monthly Journal, Wtll we here present to the public, is the late Western Journal of the Medical and Physical Sciences, established in Cincinnati, Ohio, by Dr. Drake, in 1827, and continued into the 12th volume, and the Louisville Journal of M'edicine and Surgery, undertaken by ourselves in 1838, both of which have been for some time suspended. We shall send this number to the subscribers to those periodicals, and wish all who do not desire to continue their patronage, to return their copies forth with - those who retain them will be regarded as subscribers; and all who may have paid in advance for the two suspended Journals, will receive a credit on the books of our present periodical, for the ums that may be due to them. Our terms are payment in advance but we shall not Oxpect remittances till after the second or February number is received; which willbe put to press, as soon asa sufficient time has elapsed, to enable us to judge of the number of cepies that should be printed. Our price is five dollars a year, during which, twelve numbers of 80 pages each, making two volumes, will be published. The paper on which the present number has been printed, is inferior to what we desired and intend to use hereafter; but from the inter rupted navigation of the Ohio river, it was the best we could at the moment command. It will be seen, that we have not only secured the Editorial services of Professors Drake and Yandell, but expect the ce-operation of a respectable body of Collaborators, among whom are many of the most distinguished physicians and naturalists of the West and South. Human nature, since the tall, has been corrupt; and man has continually, from that period, been disposed to seek out, many devices by which to avoid the fulfilment of the Divine decree, that, By the sweat of the brow man should live. And in no age of the world have there been wanting 111dividuals, too scrupulous, to take advantage of opportunities for realizing a subsistence without being very particular to enquire as to the legitimacy of the means; in none of the departments of active life has this dis position been more decidedly manifested than in ourown calling. Nvhile from the earliest times, there have been individuals who have pursued the investigation of disease with honest and phil anthmpic purposes, a large number have always been found looking alone to the accumulation of wealth and attainment of position, by practising upon the ignorance and credulity of the world. The fondness for mystwy upon the part of the votaries of medicine, and the willingness upon the' part of the world to be deceived, perhaps, commenced with Esculapius (to whom was ascribed the power of raising the dead, and who was worshipped as the God of Medicine) and has descended in no small degree down to our own times. If, the temples which the ancients were wont to raise to him, and in which votive tablets were hung up, on which were recorded the diseases cured, as they imagined, by his assistance, are no longer erected to our modern Gods, they are able, at least, to record their own deeds, and to raise temples and palaces for themselves from the rich otter. Ings which flow from a perpetuation of the same credulity and ignorance, and doubtless, in this age of the world, can divini tics prefer the wealth and luxury heaped upon them to all the honors which the ancients awarded to aesculapius. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 109 Listerine embodies a two-fold antiseptic effect, in that after the evaporation of its volatile constituents - thyme, eucalyptus, mentha, gaultheria and ethyl alcohol - a film boracic and benzoic acids remain upon the surface to which Listerine has been applied, affording more prolonged antiseptic protection. Listerine is a trustworthy surgical dressing; it has no injurious effect upon the tissues in which the healing process is going on. Listerine in proper dilution is useful in the treatment of abnormal conditions of the mucosa and forms a suitable wash, gargle or douche in catarrhal conditions of the nose and throat. Listerine in teaspoonful doses will often afford relief in fermentative dyspepsia and is largely prescribed, with excellent results, in the various forms of diarrhoea occurring in infants and adults.
