Film historians have long noted the movie's impact on a generation of horror and fantasy directors and its continued impact on special effects. Today the film only exists in a greatly abridged version, with nearly half of the original footage missing. Through the original shooting script, the reader is able to reconstruct the lost scenes, imagining O'Brien's special effects genius. The editor also provides background information on the film's production. Many stills of the movie are included.
