And Thailand is the number-one tourist destination in Southeast Asia. The island of Phuket, which is approximately the size of Singapore, has everything from ancient relics to zoos. There is something to please any adventure seeker. There are crowded beaches, or secluded coves. Festivals and regattas cram the calendar. Also covered in detail are the numerous other islands nearby, plus an extensive section on Thai cuisine, helpful language and vocabulary tips, where to get medical and legal help if you need it, and much more. The finest hotels, with impeccable service, cost a fraction of what you would pay elsewhere, and shoppers will never tire of the vast selections, from silk scarves and designer gowns to exotic jewelery. Try elephant trekking, sea canoeing or Thai massage. Taste the exquisite cuisine, explore mystic temples and sail to unspoiled islands. "The Adventure Guides" are about living more intensely, waking up to your surroundings and truly experiencing all that you encounter. The regional chapters take you on an introductory tour, with stops at museums, historic sites and local attractions. Places to stay and eat; transportation to, from and around your destination; practical concerns; tourism contacts - it's all here! Detailed maps. Then come the adventures - both cultural and physical - from canoeing and hiking to taking dance or cooking classes. This unique approach allows you to really immerse yourself in the local culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the huge natural disasters that claimed the lives of thousands in Asia, the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 was the largest, estimated to have killed more than 230,000 people. The scope of damage brought about by this natural disaster urges focus on recovery and post-disaster reconstruction from several perspectives. Here we find an in-depth ethnography of Thailand and the role of culture and religion as an underpinning issue in post-disaster recovery. Following the post-tsunami recovery over five years, the book provides knowledge on socio-cultural responses from affected local communities after natural hazards, and is based on original material collected in Thailand after the 2004 tsunami. With a focus on how culture and religion interplay in the processes of building resilience and decreasing vulnerability, it gives a deeper understanding of how disasters are experienced and dealt with on a local level. It examines survivors’ experiences of rituals and ceremonies that became a part of the survivors’ lives in new ways after the tsunami, offering psychological reassurance and religious efficaciousness as well as communication links between themselves and the deceased. Using observations, narratives and material from in-depth interviews with survivors, relatives, relief workers, officials and Buddhist monks and nuns, this book contributes to the research on anthropology of disaster and to the development of research on cultural resilience and religion in post-disaster recovery. It will be of interest to scholars of Disaster Studies, Buddhist Studies and Asian Studies.

Book excerpt: The exotic tropical island of Bali is the fabulous setting for the aftermath of the infamous BarLan Bre-X gold mine stock swindle in Borneo which is still thundering throughout South East Asia and echoing around the world. A coniving and truly-evil, Irish-Canadian stock promoter from Jakarta, Indonesia has declared bankrupcy and is on the prowl to regain his riches. He stops at nothing; his rampant greed and lust know no bounds. Murder, opium smuggling and fraud are his forte! A seductive Balinese physiotherapist nurse lost her family's fortune. Now her brother is missing from his job as a geologist at the two-mile-high Goldberg Gold Mine in New Guinea. Was he murdered? Where is his gold Ganesa icon? It's a mystery! In a state of near-collapse she has nowhere to turn! This action-packed second novel in a series features the somewhat-jaded but dashing Rune Erikson, who enters a steamy world of scintillating Balinese myths and legends. He is caught up in the middle of an adventure where the ruthless winner takes all. Rune enlists the aid of his stockbroker buddy, Logan, in a race against time where the prizes are a stolen fortune, a missing brother, and the mother lode of gold. Coloured by romance and eroticism, this intrigue entices Rune off his sailing ketch Valhalla in Victoria's Fisherman's Wharf into the arms of beguiling Asian beauties on the exotic tropical island of Bali.

Book excerpt: "Circumnavigating the Globe" highlights international travel in a reality television show competition. This book covers what happened in Amazing Race (AR) 10 to 14 and Amazing Race Asia (ARA) 1 to 3. Many of the analysis chapters also cover AR1 to 9. Included are an Amazing Race Vocabulary and listing of all countries and major cities visited by all amazing races(ARs plus ARAs). There is an analysis chapter on Animals. The author rates the Saddest Elimination of every AR or ARA and Weakest Teams in each AR or ARA. Analyses shows why his Favorite Teams for each AR and ARA merit that distinction and one is selected as the most favorite of all time. The most interesting chapter in this book could be the Most Amazing Moments of each AR and ARA. Following that, every FAST FORWARD ever taken is listed with type of task, the geography and the competition if known. There is a separate classification of all AR teams into categories Female/Female, Male/Male, Couple and Family Relationships with the major reason for elimination listed if that team did not win. There are transportation chapters on travel by air, self-driving, taxis, boats, trains and buses. This book finishes with multiple indexes on Races, Racers, and the most cited Places. If you are a fan of the Amazing Race, this book will help you become a superfan.

Book excerpt: "The Journals of the farway lands" that are in the hands of readers is Trinh Quang Phu’s latest work at his “rare” matured age, but his pen is still strong, and his flow of writing is still powerful. Journal is his forte. His writing is simply natural, yet thoroughly and deeply. We see the glimpse of Paustovsky when the writer describes the beautiful scenery of Moscow in the golden autumn then the birch forest was in its changing season “a bright yellow 3-dimensional space as if to lift up the human soul ", or the scene”. And the beauty of Mount Fuji of the land of cherry blossoms is as if in the painting of Levitan, appearing in front of the reader.” (The writer NGUYEN TRUONG Director, Editor-in-Chief of Thanh Nien Publishing House)
