Book excerpt: In March 1982, the guided-missile destroyer HMS Coventry was one of a small squadron of ships on exercise off Gibraltar. By the end of April that year, she was sailing south in the vanguard of the Task Force towards the Falklands. On 25 May, Coventry was attacked and hit by three bombs. The explosions tore out most of her port side and killed nineteen of the crew, leaving many others injured. Within twenty minutes, she had capsized, and was to sink early the next day. In her final moments, when all those not killed by the explosions had been evacuated from the ship, her Captain, David Hart Dyke, himself badly burned, climbed down her starboard side and into a life-raft. This is his compelling and moving story.

Book Synopsis Imagining the Arctic by : Huw Lewis-Jones
Download or read book Imagining the Arctic written by Huw Lewis-Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagining the Arctic explores the culture and politics of polar exploration and the making of its heroes. Leading explorers, the celebrity figures of their day, went to great lengths to convince their contemporaries of the merits of polar voyages. Much of exploration was in fact theatre: a series of performances to capture public attention and persuade governments to finance ambitious proposals. The achievements of explorers were promoted, celebrated, and manipulated, whilst explorers themselves became the subject of huge attention. Huw Lewis-Jones draws upon recovered texts and striking images, many reproduced for the first time since the nineteenth century, to show how exploration was projected through a series of spectacular visuals, helping us to reconstruct the ways that heroes and the wilderness were imagined. Elegantly written and richly illustrated, Imagining the Arctic offers original insights into our understanding of exploration and its pull on the public imagination.

This book was released on 2006-10-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From aerial survey to zoology, Part I of this two-part encyclopedia covers all aspects of underwater archeology, treasure hunting and salvaging. For example, entries are included for different types of artifacts, notable treasure hunters, the various salvaging equipment, and techniques in mapping and excavating. Part II covers the shipwrecks themselves, dividing them into 13 geographical categories. Beginning with the northernmost category (Canada) and ending with the southernmost (South America), every known shipwreck--both identified and unidentified--receives an entry in alphabetical order under its appropriate geographical category. Entries are by name, such as Andrea Gail, Titanic, and Queen Ann's Revenge. Unidentified is used when a shipwreck's name remains unknown. Entries give the nationality (e.g., Spanish, British, American), type (schooner, frigate, brig are three), function (examples: slave transportation, piracy, fishing), location and history of the shipwreck.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reportedly the largest Empire that has ever existed throughout human history, at its height the British Empire was reported to have ruled over some four hundred and fifty millions subjects, a quarter of the world's population at the beginning of the 20th century and controlled an estimated thirteen million square miles of territory, around 25%% of the world's total land surface. This five hundred page project, tries to take a balanced view of Britain's vast imperial possessions, how they were acquired, how they were lost and their histories, since they gained independence. The publication attempts to take a specific look at some of the more troubling aspects of the Empires past, including those dealing with the Troubles in Ireland, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the Indian Subcontinent, the European Scramble for Africa, as well as the numerous wars and battles that such imperial expansionism created.
