Book excerpt: "This 109-page report examines the inner workings of war crimes units in the three countries and highlights key lessons learned. Since justice is often elusive where the crimes occurred, national courts in these three states and elsewhere are more frequently applying the longstanding principle of "universal jurisdiction" to prosecute suspects accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and torture, regardless of where the crimes were committed and the victim's and accused's nationality."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis The Long Arm of Moore's Law by : Cyrus C. M. Mody
Download or read book The Long Arm of Moore's Law written by Cyrus C. M. Mody and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How, beginning in the mid 1960s, the US semiconductor industry helped shape changes in American science, including a new orientation to the short-term and the commercial. Since the mid 1960s, American science has undergone significant changes in the way it is organized, funded, and practiced. These changes include the decline of basic research by corporations; a new orientation toward the short-term and the commercial, with pressure on universities and government labs to participate in the market; and the promotion of interdisciplinarity. In this book, Cyrus Mody argues that the changes in American science that began in the 1960s co-evolved with and were shaped by the needs of the “civilianized” US semiconductor industry. In 1965, Gordon Moore declared that the most profitable number of circuit components that can be crammed on a single silicon chip doubles every year. Mody views “Moore's Law” less as prediction than as self-fulfilling prophecy, pointing to the enormous investments of capital, people, and institutions the semiconductor industry required—the “long arm” of Moore's Law that helped shape all of science. Mody offers a series of case studies in microelectronics that illustrate the reach of Moore's Law. He describes the pressures on Stanford University's electrical engineers during the Vietnam era, IBM's exploration of alternatives to semiconductor technology, the emergence of consortia to integrate research across disciplines and universities, and the interwoven development of the the molecular electronics community and associated academic institutions as the vision of a molecular computer informed the restructuring of research programs.

Book Synopsis The Evolution of English Justice by : W Mark Ormrod
Download or read book The Evolution of English Justice written by W Mark Ormrod and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1998-10-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the fourteenth century for the development of English law has long been recognised. The shocks and challenges of that period - the murder of the incompetent Edward II, Edward III's ever escalating military demands for the war in France and the unparalleled disaster of the Black Death - gave English society a trauma that found its ultimate expression in Lollardy and the Peasants' Revolt. Out of this ferment came the evolution of a system of justice still substantially recognisable today. This key theme for students of late medieval England has often been made needlessly difficult by the rarefied nature of most books available on the subject. The aim of this book is to present in lucid and approachable terms the main outline of the debate and the different schools of thought, and to suggest the best ways by which students can understand a crucial subject and how this helps illuminate many other aspects of English society during the reigns of Edward II, Edward III and Richard II.

Book Synopsis Imagining Justice for Syria by : Beth Van Schaack
Download or read book Imagining Justice for Syria written by Beth Van Schaack and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book situates the war in Syria within the actual and imagined system of international criminal justice. It explores the legal impediments and diplomatic challenges that have led to the fatal trinity affecting Syria: the massive commission of international crimes that are subject to detailed investigations and documentation but whose perpetrators have enjoyed virtually complete impunity. Given this tragic state of affairs, the book tracks a number of accountability solutions being explored within multilateral initiatives and by civil society actors, including innovations of institutional design; the renewed utility of a range of domestic jurisdictional principles (including the revival of universal jurisdiction in Europe); the emergence of creative investigative and documentation techniques, technologies, and organizations; and the rejection of state consent as a precondition for the exercise of jurisdiction. Engaging both law and policy around international justice, the text offers a set of justice blueprints, within and without the International Criminal Court. It also considers the utility, propriety, and practicality of pursuing a transitional justice program without a genuine political transition. All told, the book attempts to capture results of the creative energy radiating from members of the international community intent on advancing the accountability norm in Syria even in the face of geopolitical blockages within the U.N. Security Council. In so doing, it presents the range of juridical measures-both criminal and civil - that would be available to the international community to respond to the crisis, if only the political will existed.

Book Synopsis Justice, Justice, Where Art Thou? by : William Ballhaus, Sr
Download or read book Justice, Justice, Where Art Thou? written by William Ballhaus, Sr and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justice, Justice, Where Art Thou? tells many real life stories of people who have been the victims of the Courts, Judges, and Attorneys in the United States. The author's search for justice in the courts relates the terrible experiences he endured at the mercy of the legal system. Specific judicial errors of fact and of law subjected the author to severe injustices at the hands of judges who ignored his right to a trial by jury. He tried to find justice at all levels: City Courts, State Courts, Federal Courts, Courts of Appeals, and even the United States Supreme Court. None of the courts was interested in seeing that justice was done to the author. That lack of justice led the author to study many cases tried in the various courts of the country. It was difficult to find that justice was attained in many cases. There were a few fine results, but they were very rare. As Mark Twain said, "Judges and lawyers use the law to defeat the ends of justice."
