Book excerpt: This great London orchestra made its debut in a recording session shortly before its first public concert in 1932 and now has well over a thousand recordings to its credit. All are dated and detailed for the first time in this meticulous study researched from primary sources. Commercial sessions account for most of the 1300 entries, but the main chronological sequence also includes live recordings and videos. Copious indexing allows access to the main chronological listings via performers, repertoire, record companies, or locations. The study can also be read as a cross-section of the work of the classical recording industry. Appendixes cover film soundtracks, recordings made by the London Philharmonic Choir independently of the orchestra, controversial attributions, and principal players in the orchestra. Indexes of (and notes on) the recorded repertoire, conductors who have recorded with the orchestra, and the studios, halls, and churches used as recording venues are supplemented by a comprehensive general index of soloists, singers (including full casts of operas), producers, engineers, and recording companies, giving easy access to a wealth of information, most of which has previously been unpublished.

Book Synopsis The Dial Recordings of Charlie Parker by : Edward Komara
Download or read book The Dial Recordings of Charlie Parker written by Edward Komara and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-06-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dial Records catered to jazz musicians and record collectors. Charlie Parker was one of the major jazz artists to record with Dial. His Dial sessions occurred at the personal depths and artistic peaks of his career during which he introduced a number of such jazz staples as Ornithology and Scrapple from the Apple. His ten sessions associated with Dial are presented in detail and include the repertory, original issues and reissues, titles and notated transcriptions, and analyses of performances. Commentary explains many of the titles to Parker's pieces and collates the various recordings in which he performed his Dial repertory outside the confines of the Dial studios; these celebrated performances helped to shape modern jazz. In addition to the catalogue of Parker's Dial recordings, jazz historians and scholars alike will appreciate the historical narrative detailing the evolution of Dial Records, its owner Ross Russell, and its business relations with Charlie Parker. This examination of the 1940's jazz record business sheds light on the dissemination of jazz via records. Five appendices complete this well organized and thorough study of Charlie Parker and his legendary Dial recordings.

Born of literary parents in Bowdon, near Manchester, he went to London at the age of fourteen to study at the newly-founded Royal College of Music where he eventually became a pupil of Charles Villiers Stanford. Among his near contemporaries at the College were Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Thomas Dunhill, William Y. Hurlstone, Henry Walford Davies and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Download or read book Giacomo Puccini written by Roger Flury and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera recordings have been with us since the creation of the first wax cylinders. Now at a time when the 25-year reign of the compact disc appears to be coming to an end is the moment to take stock of the history of recordings of arguably the most popular composer of operas, Giacomo Puccini. In Giacomo Puccini: A Discography, librarian and music historian Roger Flury looks at each opera chronologically from Le Villi to Turandot, followed by sections on Puccini's instrumental, chamber, orchestral, and solo vocal works. Details of each complete opera are listed by recording date, followed by excerpts in the order in which they occur in the opera. Recordings of each aria are listed alphabetically by the name of the artist. For ease of use, Flury establishes as the main criteria for inclusion those recordings assigned a commercial issue number and available for purchase. This book does not limit itself to mainstream recordings but includes as well 'unofficial' recordings taken from broadcasts or illegally recorded in theaters, ensuring that the audio recording history of Puccini is free of gaps. (Video and DVD issues, whether of staged performances or excerpts in concert, are not included unless they have been issued in a sound-only format.) This volume brings together information on nearly 10,000 recordings of Puccini's music. It provides a comprehensive overview of the recorded history of the composer's works and serves as a useful guide for the transfer of recordings from one format to another.
