Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An updated and expanded new edition of an authoritative book on flight dynamics and control system design for all types of current and future fixed-wing aircraft Since it was first published, Flight Dynamics has offered a new approach to the science and mathematics of aircraft flight, unifying principles of aeronautics with contemporary systems analysis. Now updated and expanded, this authoritative book by award-winning aeronautics engineer Robert Stengel presents traditional material in the context of modern computational tools and multivariable methods. Special attention is devoted to models and techniques for analysis, simulation, evaluation of flying qualities, and robust control system design. Using common notation and not assuming a strong background in aeronautics, Flight Dynamics will engage a wide variety of readers, including aircraft designers, flight test engineers, researchers, instructors, and students. It introduces principles, derivations, and equations of flight dynamics as well as methods of flight control design with frequent reference to MATLAB functions and examples. Topics include aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flying qualities, flight control, and the atmospheric and gravitational environment. The second edition of Flight Dynamics features up-to-date examples; a new chapter on control law design for digital fly-by-wire systems; new material on propulsion, aerodynamics of control surfaces, and aeroelastic control; many more illustrations; and text boxes that introduce general mathematical concepts. Features a fluid, progressive presentation that aids informal and self-directed study Provides a clear, consistent notation that supports understanding, from elementary to complicated concepts Offers a comprehensive blend of aerodynamics, dynamics, and control Presents a unified introduction of control system design, from basics to complex methods Includes links to online MATLAB software written by the author that supports the material covered in the book

Book excerpt: Tom Tresh is a small-time Los Angeles attorney always looking for a big score. Divorced and broke, with an ex-wife and a seven year old son to support, Tom has spent his career trying to walk the line between defending his criminal clients and becoming involved in their crimes. So when his old friend Charlie asks him to help broker a deal for a mysterious new computer program and promises him a huge payday for his services, Tom is willing to turn a blind eye to the details. Big mistake. Two of the people involved in the theft are found gruesomely slaughtered in a vacant lot. It's a warning. If Tom doesn't return the program, a "Logic Bomb" capable of destroying the world's vital computer systems, then all Tom has -- his family, his friends, his life -- will be brutally exterminated. Tom's frantic fight to unravel the conspiracy erupts into an all-out war waged in court and in the street against a cartel of corporate thugs, Chinese spies, domestic terrorists, and the U.S. government. Tom recruits an army of his own, led by the head of a murderous LA gang, a beautiful and deadly former cop, and a mysterious genius hacker. As Tom's team races towards a fierce and violent showdown, no one can be trusted and everything is at stake. In The Logic Bomb, veteran Los Angeles attorney Scott Richard Lord has crafted a riveting novel as fresh as tomorrow's Internet headlines. Populated with vividly compelling and original characters, sprawling across indelible Left Coast landmarks, the story is filled with the incredible but true details of the secret machinery behind the cyber war being fought everywhere today.

Book excerpt: The final novel in the acclaimed Elemental Logic series finds Karis G’deon and her sprawling family once more imperiled, this time by the legacy of violence that threatens to unravel the fragile peace they have woven across their land. Laurie Marks’ Elemental Logic series introduced readers in Fire Logic to the realm of Shaftal, an intricately imagined land whose people operate within the boundaries of their basic natures—here defined as logics—which sometimes bequeath them with access to magical, elemental powers and sometimes embroil them in unsolvable internal conflicts. In Air Logic, Karis and those who love her must figure out, in the aftermath of war and an assassination attempt, how to bring together Sainnites and Shaftali in a country where old wounds and enmities fester and Air magic conceals the treason hidden in the heart of the G’deon’s household. When Medric is taken hostage to force Karis’s hand, a strange boy will guide Zanja to the place where she may yet save him. A mother must remember the son she has been made to forget, and Air children will find what their place in the world may yet be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four main essays in this volume investigate new sectors of the theory of decision, preference, act-characteristics, and action analysis. Herbert A. Simon applies tools developed in the theory of decision-making to the logic of action, and thereby develops a novel concept of heuristic power. Adapting ideas from utility and decision theory, Nicholas Rescher proposes a logic of preference by which conflicting theories proposed by G. H. von Wright, R. M. Chisholm, and others can be systematized. Donald Davidson discusses difficulties in specifying the structure of action sentences to elucidate how their meaning depends on that structure. G. H. von Wright devises a method for describing each "state of the world" that results from an action, in a revision of his own earlier work. Additionally, a study of the logic of norms by Alan Ross Anderson is presented as an appendix, along with an appendix by Rescher outlining the aspects of action.

He does so by distinguishing between their use at the macro - and micro- levels, a distinction that no other scholar has made. He then sets forth the logic of an explanatory narrative, explores the nature of rational explanation, and distinguishes the logic of historical interpretation from the logic of historical explanation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a mechanist philosophy of mind. I hold that the human mind is a system of computational or recursive rules that are embodied in the nervous system; that the material presence of these rules accounts for perception, conception, speech, belief, desire, intentional acts, and other forms of intelligence. In this edition I have retained the whole of the fIrst edition except for discussion of issues which no longer are relevant in philosophy of mind and cognitive psychology. Earlier reference to disputes of the 1960's and 70's between hard-line empiricists and neorationalists over the psychological status of grammars and language acquisition, for instance, has simply been dropped. In place of such material I have entered some timely or new topics and a few changes. There are brief references to the question of computer versus distributed processing (connectionist) theories. Many of these questions dissolve if one distinguishes as I now do in Chapter II between free and embodied algorithms. I have also added to my comments on artifIcal in telligence some reflections. on Searle's Chinese Translator. The irreducibility of machine functionalist psychology in my version or any other has been exaggerated. Input, output, and state entities are token identical to physical or biological things of some sort, while a machine system as a collection of recursive rules is type identical to representatives of equivalence classes. This nuld technicality emerges in Chapter XI. It entails that so-called "anomalous monism" is right in one sense and wrong in another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing decline in union membership is generally attributed to an increasingly hostile economic, legal, and managerial environment. Samuel B. Bacharach, Peter A. Bamberger, and William J. Sonnenstuhl argue that the decline may have more to do with a crisis of union legitimacy and member commitment. They further suggest that both problems could be addressed if the unions return to their nineteenth-century, mutual aid-based roots. The authors contend that the labor movement is characterized by two models of union-member relations: the mutual aid logic and the servicing logic. The first predominated in the early days and encouraged a sense of community among members who worked to support one another. In the twentieth century, it was largely replaced by the servicing model, which asks little of members, who remain loyal only if their leaders deliver increasing wages and benefits.Regaining legitimacy and strengthening member commitment can only happen, the authors claim, if mutual aid logic is allowed to return. They examine three unions in the transportation industry to judge the effectiveness of new programs created after the old model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one can escape Dharma, the eternal laws. Beliefs grow into actions, and action-learning converts to Sankhya, while deeper research requires meditation, i.e. Bhaktiyog, Karmyog, Gyanyog, and Dhyanyog successively. Fundamentalists never comprehend the fundamentals of religion, ironically, nor do the apostates. Ancient Rishi’s quest for survival of humanity in sync with nature forced inquiries into physical and metaphysical realms, discovering spirituality as the basis of Science, Creations and Psychology, which they coded into mythologies and symbols, only to be deciphered in times to come. Basic pillars of Sanatan Dharma, i.e. Purush, Prakriti, Brahm and Yog hide sciences. The element of ubiquitous spirit in us warns naturally. Sanatan Dharma explains ethical hierarchies, egalitarianism and utilitarianism, with intent to establish Summum Bonum. People from different culture and religions think alike due to triguna nature, which applies beyond man-made religious boundaries. Rishis searched for the truth honestly, Later politicization created today’s religions. At core, all religions are the same, and hold the key to oneness globally. Does Yoga compare to Trinity in Christianity? How Prophet Mohammad, got enlightenment while meditating in the Hera Caves? Big Bang theory of creations has a mention in scriptures, from the smallest dimensionless source to infinitely expanding universe? Lord Vishnu rests in a serpentine bed in Ksheer Sagar (or milky way); from his naval evolves Lord Brahma, the solar system, Terrestrial gods pray Him. Cosmological hierarchy is depicted as Lord Brahma Vishnu Mahesh? This book logically deciphers symbols and myths, meant to define humanity.
