Download or read book The Boundary Commissions written by D. J. Rossiter and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four Boundary Commissions, one each for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, were established in the mid-1940s and have now been responsible for creating five new maps of Parliamentary constituencies. Despite their importance in British political life, very little has been written about the Commissions and how they work, and much that has been written focuses on the short-term issues of the electoral impact of a new set of constituencies. This volume is a study of the Commissions, involving in-depth interviews with all major interest groups and individuals alongside scrutiny of all relevant documents and statistical analyses of the outcomes.

Book Synopsis The Reorganisation of British Local Government by : John Dearlove
Download or read book The Reorganisation of British Local Government written by John Dearlove and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-09-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published in 1979, just a few years after the Local Government Act of 1972 redrew the map of British local government. Local authorities were also encouraged to change their organization and methods of work; anxiety was expressed about finance, councillor 'calibre' and the credibility of the whole system itself; and neighbourhood councils and public participation in planning were introduced. John Dearlove's aim is to make sense of these changes and the discussion they generated. He does this by showing that both the official case for reorganization and the academic discussion of it have hindered their own understanding by uncritically accepting superficial traditional wisdoms which fail to reveal the concealed ideological positions behind reorganization. Thus, he aims to develop a truly political perspective on reorganisation which is rounded out and given greater depth by the insertion at appropriate points of comparative material drawn from American experience and studies.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book was the first comprehensive, critical assessment of the outcome of the controversial reorganisation of British local government outside London which took place between 1973 and 1975. The book deals with the new systems in England, Wales and Scotland, drawing upon the results of almost 100 in-depth interviews with leading members and officers from Shetland to Cornwall, from major cities to rural districts. Liaison between the tiers, the effects of corporate management, the spread of the office of chief executive, the increasing levels of partisanship and the changing face of central-local relations are examined on the basis of close observation and practical experience rather than theoretical preconceptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitutional and Administrative Law (Public Law) is a dynamic and challenging area of law which has an impact on all of our lives. Whenever a government is elected, a new piece of legislation is passed or a citizen’s rights are abused, it is Public Law which provides the legal framework within which government and administration functions. Hilaire Barnett’s classic textbook equips students with an understanding of the constitution’s past, present and future by analysing and illustrating the political and socio-historical contexts which have shaped the major rules and principles of public law, as well as ongoing constitutional reform. Having undergone a rigorous editing process to offer a more concise account of public law today, contemporary developments covered in this edition include the UK's first coalition government for nearly 60 years, and recent proposals to introduce fixed-term parliaments and electoral reform. Key learning features include: introductory chapter overviews outlining the topics and concepts covered; short chapter summaries to distil and reflect upon the main points raised; marginal cross-references which help students to recognise connections across topics; a comprehensive companion website, featuring enhanced coverage and a pathway for further study across a variety of topics Mapped to the common course outline, this textbook offers full coverage of the Public Law syllabus. Written in a clear and understandable style, Constitutional and Administrative Law is an invaluable resource for every student of Public Law.

Download or read book Spatial Dimensions of Public Policy written by J. T. Coppock and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatial Dimensions of Public Policy deals with the spatial dimensions of public policy with particular reference to resource management, urban development, regional development, and poverty alleviation. Emphasis is on the geographer's actual and potential contributions to public policy. Comprised of 15 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the nature of geographers' contributions to public policy and the reasons why they have not been as effective as the relationships between their interests and important issues of public policy might suggest. The next chapter describes how policy decisions are made in Canada and reviews the nature of disciplinary contributions to governmental decision-making at the highest level. Subsequent chapters focus on regional policy and broad issues of world strategy; specific contributions to public policy, particularly in the United Kingdom; spatial aspects of pollution policy; and policies outside the United Kingdom. Energy policy in Western Europe is discussed, together with a geographer's contribution to addressing environmental problems in New Zealand; the difficulties of achieving an accurate population census of Nigeria; and the reshaping of the legislative and congressional districts of the State of Washington. This monograph will be of interest to geographers and public policymakers.
