This book was released on 1995 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Church of Christ has developed its distinctive theological identity since 1957, having drawn upon the four mainstream traditions and various hidden histories that came together at its birth. It has been profoundly shaped by movements for racial and social justice, the organizational thrust of old-line Protestantism, the changing role of women, new patterns of immigration, and ongoing ecumenical efforts to embody the unity of the Christian church. This seventh volume showcases the theological work of the United Church of Christ from 1957 to 2000 and invites its leaders and members to become more theologically self-conscious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of Reclaiming Our Roots carries readers on a whirlwind journey from the eve of the Reformation to developments in Christianity in the twentieth century. As in the first volume, Mark Ellingsen gives special attention to the history of Christianity in the southern hemisphere, the church among minority cultures in North America, and the role of women in church history. Ellingsen's careful and critical eye ranges over the entire panorama of modern church history. He provides balanced theological analyses of major movements and figures as well as the interactions between them. Ellingsen presents church history as an opportunity to enter into a dialogue with the church's richly diverse heritage. He sees the role of church history as: Community builder--teaching the faithful their heritage, Safety patrol--sensitizing church leaders to the errors of the past that they must still confront, Liberating instrument--learning to look at reality from the perspective of the other, no longer chained to one's own suppositions and cultural biases, and Source of theological creativity--providing access to the stimulating insights of the great theological minds of the past. This thought-provoking book offers readers a sympathetic exposure to a variety of credible, scholarly interpretations of major figures and encourages them to make their own judgments with the help of suggested primary source readings. Ellingsen closes each chapter with questions that lead readers to ponder the deeper meanings of various events in the history of Christianity.

Randi Walker examines the ethos and culture of the UCC rather than simply describing its structures, and addresses the themes of inclusiveness; diversity of theological heritage (Reformation, Enlightenment, and Pietism); congregational polity (the one and the many); liberal theological approach; and ecumenical spirit. Walker also takes a look at the tensions and boundaries contained within each theme.
Book Synopsis United and Uniting by : Albert J.D. Walsh
Download or read book United and Uniting written by Albert J.D. Walsh and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United Church of Christ was formed in 1957 to be first and foremost a proactive agent in the often tangled but nonetheless breathtaking ministry and mission of ecumenicity in the pursuit of ever greater visible unity among the diversity of Christian churches. This singular task of ecumenicity is arguably the most crucial in the formulation of an ecclesiology essential to the United Church of Christ as a ""united and uniting"" church; a mission Albert Walsh refers to in this book as her God given ""vision-and-vocation."" In United and Uniting, Walsh contends that the identity and self-understanding of the UCC at both national and local levels is best comprehended as a ""Christ-centered"" and ""conciliar"" fellowship, and therefore her ecclesiology must be fundamentally ecumenical. A Christ-centered ecumenicity must shape, inform, and characterize the whole of her ecclesiology, and membership in the UCC is defined almost exclusively in terms of a ""conciliar"" identity. Walsh advocates a return to ecumenical formation at the level of the grassroots or membership in the local congregation as holding the greatest promise for furtherance of the wider ecumenical mission."
Book Synopsis The People are Holy by : Graydon F. Snyder
Download or read book The People are Holy written by Graydon F. Snyder and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using biblical and historical data, this book first describes the biblical and theological basis for worship in the Free Church tradition, then shows how this tradition is expressed in worship at special occasions as well as in traditional services. The People Are Holy describes the characteristics of early church worship, then traces how those qualities and practices are realized in the Free Churches. In addition to analyzing all parts of the Sunday worship services, the book includes a consideration of key special services such as baptisms, communions, weddings, installations, healing services, and funerals. In order to demonstrate how preaching functions, the book contains four sermons on key concerns for the Free Church. This book will help members of Free Churches understand why they do what they do when they come together as a faith community. It will help pastors reflect on the theological and biblical basis of how they conduct worship. This is not a "how-to" book. Based on the faith stance of Free Churches in general, it describes what would be the reasonable application of those principles in worshipping communities. Christians not of a Free Church persuasion can discover in this book what inspires so many Americans and marks the way they worship. Book jacket.
