Book excerpt: At the time of her death in October 2002, Dr. Tamara Hareven was in the process of completing a large cross-cultural examination of the global declines in the silk and textile industries. A small sample of her interview data transcripts from canuts in Lyon have, 20 years after her death, been translated into English and coded for themes. Six themes emerged from the participants' data. Participants sensed that the industry was disappearing, that the industry was something that was looked at as a historical artifact to be studied rather than a profession, and that there was not enough being done to encourage young people to enter the industry. Gender disparities within the industry continued to a lesser extent than before the 20th century began, but still seemed profound, especially as girls who were recruited for apprenticeships were often minors when they were moved away from their families. The apprenticeship conditions continued to be less than desirable well into the 20th century. Economically, the silk industry is often poorly paid and vulnerable to economic crises as fashion and world economics change. Large social changes often had impacts on the family life of the silk worker families. Finally, just as economics tended to ebb and flow for the silk industry, so did the labor conditions.

We learn of dismal, unsanitary housing; of disease; workplace accidents; and terrible hardship, especially for the children of the poor. We read of exploitation and injustice, of courtship and marriage, and of the sociability of the wine-merchant's shop and the boardinghouse. Traugott's analytic introduction discusses the many shifts in French society during the nineteenth century. Used in combination with other sources, these autobiographies illuminate the relationship between changes in working conditions and in the forms of political participation and protest occurring as the century came to a close.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silk Industry of the World at the Opening of the Twentieth Century In this pamphlet it is not deemed necessary to describe what raw silk is, or how it is grown, or what the processes of sericulture and the silk worm are. Numerous publications, both in this country and abroad, give this information very fully, and it seems superfluous to reproduce it. The aim here is to trace the development of the silk industry in the principal countries which manufacture silk fabrics, to describe the processes of manufacture, and to indicate the causes and present conditions of its progress and equipment at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Notwithstanding the antiquity of the silk industry, and the important relation that the principal countries of the world have borne to it from time to time, it is plainly evident that the silk industry of to-day is a modern achievement. The major portion of the pamphlet was originally prepared by the writer as an article for the "Encyclopedia Americana" an entirely new work from the Twentieth Century point of view, now being published in 16 volumes by the Scientific American Compiling Department. It is now reprinted by the Silk Association of America for distribution among its members, with "copyright" permission of the publishers of the "Encyclopedia Americana." Book excerpt: This book presents the exceptional biography of the 20th century Chinese astronomer Cheng Maolan, who came to France in 1926 on a China-France cooperation program to do his PhD with the idea of returning to China after a few years. Instead, he lived two lives. He first stayed in France and studied astronomy in Lyon, the “Silk city”, where he suffered the hardships of the German occupation, but also witnessed the construction of the Haute-Provence Observatory. After the war, he started a promising career at Lyon Observatory. However, in 1957 he decided to live a second life, by returning to the motherland, which had in the meantime become the People's Republic of China. There, he suffered the hardships of the Cultural Revolution, but he managed to play a pivotal role in establishing the Beijing Observatory as its director. In particular, he prepared the ground for the Xinglong 2-m telescope, which saw its first light in 1989, ten years after his death. Cheng Maolan is now considered a "Chinese hero": an "Astronomy and Technology Museum" was built and named after him in 2018, in his native city of Boye, Hebei Province, China, featuring a tall, white statue in front of the building.

William H. Sewell Jr. observes that on questions of theory the communication has been mostly one way: from social science to history. Logics of History argues that both history and the social sciences have something crucial to offer each other. While historians do not think of themselves as theorists, they know something social scientists do not: how to think about the temporalities of social life. On the other hand, while social scientists’ treatments of temporality are usually clumsy, their theoretical sophistication and penchant for structural accounts of social life could offer much to historians.
