Book Synopsis The Drama of Dictatorship by : Joseph Scalice
Download or read book The Drama of Dictatorship written by Joseph Scalice and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-15 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Drama of Dictatorship uncovers the role played by rival Communist parties in the conflict that culminated in Ferdinand Marcos's declaration of martial law in 1972. Using the voluminous radical literature of the period, Joseph Scalice reveals how two parties, the PKP and the CPP, torn apart by the Sino-Soviet dispute, subordinated the explosive mass struggles of the time behind rival elite conspirators. The PKP backed Marcos and the CPP, his bourgeois opponents. The absence of an independent mass movement in defense of democracy made dictatorship possible. The Drama of Dictatorship argues that the martial law regime was not fundamentally the outcome of Marcos's personal quest to remain in power but rather a consensus of the country's ruling elite, confronted with mounting social unrest, that authoritarian forms of rule were necessary to preserve their property and privileges. The bourgeois opponents of Marcos did not defend democracy but, like Marcos, plotted against it.

Download or read book A Patriot Gone Rogue written by Tom A. Liria and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-07-18 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and his Martial Law Regime. A New Perspective Ferdinand Marcos has been called names: demagogue, ruthless dictator, murderer, thief, among others and, truly so. He must have believed that the spirit of the 1898 Revolution from Spain with victory robbed by the United States being inconclusive, was real. His lust for power appeared to be a manifestation of a desire to set it aright. He believed that it was his destiny to correct it. The time to act came and he grabbed it. His mistake was that he never told anyone about it. Sadly, circumstances beyond his control intervened. At the outset, he was in complete control but in 1975 his health started to fail him. All the people who he depended upon to help, found reasons to desert him and get their own share before he finally lost it. The rest is history. This is by no means an effort to justify or seek forgiveness but to show a man who had an obsession to continue the patriotic fervor that his forbears had and took the leap. Thus he can be said to have been “A Patriot Gone Rogue.”

Book Synopsis Human Rights and State Security by : Anja Jetschke
Download or read book Human Rights and State Security written by Anja Jetschke and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, influential studies have shown that the activities of human rights organizations are central in convincing violating governments to improve their practices. Yet some governments continue to get away with human rights violations despite mobilizations against them. In Human Rights and State Security: Indonesia and the Philippines, Anja Jetschke considers the impact of transnational human rights advocacy on the process of human rights reform and democratization in two countries that have been successful in resisting international human rights pressure. Jetschke details the effects of campaigns waged by international and domestic NGOs, foreign governments, local opposition leaders, and international organizations. She argues that the literature on transnational advocacy overlooks the ability of governments to justify and excuse human rights violations in their public dialogue with human rights organizations. Describing efforts of international and domestic human rights advocates to protect the rights of various groups, the case studies in this book suggest that governments successfully block or evade pressures if they invoke threats to state security. Jetschke finds that state security puts into play a set of powerful international norms related to sovereignty—a state's right to territorial integrity, the secular organization of the state, or a government's lack of control over the means of organized violence. If governments frame persuasive arguments around these norms, they can effectively mobilize competing domestic and international groups and trump human rights advocacy. Human Rights and State Security shows that the content and arguments on behalf of human rights matter and provide opportunities for both governments and civil society organizations to advance their agendas.
