Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little Teachers: A Story for Big and Little Children Often they said and did mean things that they knew were not Fair Play, without knowing why they said or did them. And if they were asked why they did not Play Fair, or why they did certain queer things, they would answer that it was because they had to keep the games going. They said that if they did not do unfair tricks once in a while, that if they did not bustle around and make a big stir, the games would all die out or be broken up. They said that the Little Children did not know how to look out for themselves while they played, and that they, the Big Chill dren, sometimes had to do queer things to the little ones to protect them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phonographic Teacher: A Guide to a Practical Acquaintance With the Art of Phonetic Shorthand There has hitherto existed among all nations, great disparity, in point of facility and dispatch, between the usual methods of communicating thought - spealdng and writing: the former has always been comparatively rapid, easy, and delightful; the latter tedious, cumbrous, and wearisome. It is most strange that we who excel our progenitors so far in science, literature, and com merce, should continue to use (with but very slight changes in the forms of the letters, ) the mode of writing which they have handed down to us. Our usual method of communication, by its com plexity, obliges the readiest hand to spend at least six hours in writing what can be spoken in one. Why should we not attempt to simplify our written characters, and make them correspond, in some degree, to the simplicity of spoken sounds? The method of writing here presented, after having been subjected to the ordeal of several years' practice, by thousands of persons, has proved itself to be free from the cumbrousness complained of; and, while it can be written with fluency and ease, it may be read after any length of time with rapidity and accuracy: it is a system of exhibiting speech on paper, by signs closely resembling, in sim plicity, the sounds they represent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual of Phonography It is natural, too, that many conscientious teachers, zealous to help their students over the road to phonographic proficiency in the short est possible time, should have worked out what they believe to be improved modes of presenting the system, and we have, therefore, had offered to us a remarkable variety of short-cut methods pur porting to teach the reporting style from the beginning. The essential fallacy which underlies these endeavors to impart a working knowledge of the abbreviated form of phonography before giving the student a rational understanding of the system in its broad, element ary aspect, has been generally recognized by enlightened teachers. Continued experience amply demonstrates that in phonography, as in some other things, the longest way 'round is the shortest way home. Sound reporting habits can not be developed by methods of instruc tion which neglect thorough training in the elementary parts of the system. The corresponding style, too often despised for its own sake, is found, after all, to be the safest and shortest road by which the learner may reach the coveted skill of the amanuensis or reporter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Parent's Day, in 1952, B. F. Skinner visited his daughter's fourth grade math class. As he watched the lesson, he became increasingly uncomfortable. Almost every principle of effective teaching that he had studied for more than 20 years was being violated in that classroom. Yet it was a typical class. The teacher showed how to solve the day's problems, then gave the students a worksheet to do. Some children began to work readily while others shifted uncomfortably in their chairs, or raised their hands for help. The teacher went from desk to desk, giving help and feedback. Skinner knew what was needed. Each student should be given a problem tailored precisely to his or her skill level, not to the class average, and every answer needed to be assessed immediately to determine the next step. The task was clearly impossible for one teacher. That afternoon, Skinner set to work on a teaching machine. Today's computers have made the mechanical machine obsolete, but the principles of how to design instruction in steps that lead from a basic level to competent performance are as valid today as they were in the 20th century. This book brings together Skinner's writings on education during the years he was most involved in improving education.

Book excerpt: As music educators continue to explore various ways of learning and teaching popular music, recognizing and understanding a blend of traditional and non-traditional pedagogies that engage teachers and learners in authentic practices is of vital importance. To meet this emerging need, Action-based Approaches in Popular Music Education delves into the practices and philosophies of 26 experienced music educators who understand both the how and the why of popular music education. This edited collection represents the variety, the diversity, and the multiplicity of ideas and approaches to the teaching and learning of popular music. It’s these actionable approaches, practices, applications, lessons, and ideas that will enable music educators to understand how to better incorporate popular music into their teaching. This book is not an antidote to the lack of uniformity in popular music education – it is a celebration of it.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beautiful Book for Little Children A thing of beauty is a joy forever, says the poet; and so we cannot too soon begin to teach the child to recognize and love the beautiful. We here give him the beautiful in art, and the beautiful in thought; and, if he has not yet learned to read, the parent or teacher will here find the means of teaching him with ease and speed. The method is plain and natural, like that of teaching a child to speak. Point to the words of a line in their order, and see that he gives his attention to their form, size, and sound. Repeat this patiently, and for a short time every day; and you will soon be surprised at his progress. Do not trouble yourself, as yet, about the alphabet, or the analysis of syllables; and let the little pupil himself choose the piece that you are to drill him on.
