It is a cycle of psalms, hymns, scripture and other readings. The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary probably originated as a monastic devotion around the middle of the eighth century. Peter the Deacon reports that at the Benedictine Monastery of Monte Cassino there was, in addition to the Divine Office, another office “which it is customary to perform in honour of the Holy Mother of God, which Zachary the Pope commanded under strict precept to the Cassinese Monastery.” PUBLISHER: CATHOLIC WAY PUBLISHING

Book excerpt: Many Catholics desire to deepen their prayer lives and those devoted to Our Lady have a beautiful outlet in the Rosary. But are you aware of the other great Marian prayer? Since at least the eighth century, the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary has helped the faithful to consecrate the day with prayers, psalms, and hymns of great beauty.Others who have investigated reciting the Liturgy of the Hours, but found its length and depth intimidating will find refreshment in these brief hours. It is a primer in the art of "praying without ceasing" and the simple structure of the hours lends a deeper understanding over time of the importance of posture, gesture, and attitude when praying. This volume is unique in several ways. The text is heavily annotated with the rubrics (instructions) on how the hours are prayed. Since it structured as a liturgy (whether prayed liturgically or not), it has a set structure and flow. Other editions of the Little Office give the prayers, anthems, hymns, and verses in their proper order, but gives the reader no idea of how it looks when prayed in community. With this volume, you will know from the first page what to do. These hours can be prayed by an individual, by two or three gathered in prayer, or by a larger group of people. Once you have prayed it a few times and learned the hymns and antiphons (there are only eight) you will be eager to invite others to join you. The four hymns are new arrangements which can be sung in English or Latin, since the meter is the same; the four Marian anthems can be chanted in Latin, or sung to the hymn tunes.Whether you only pray the principal hours (Matins, Lauds, and Vespers), or one of them, or all seven, your prayer life will be enriched for your effort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maryam Baouardy is a daughter of Galilee, from a very poor family. At the age of three, she lost her father and mother and was adopted by her uncle. She never learned how to read or write, but her life became a remarkable succession of supernatural manifestations, worthy of Catherine of Siena or Teresa of Avila, from the stigmata to singular battles against Satan. From where does she draw the heavenly wisdom, childlike yet strong, that made her loved by all? Where does this burning love that consumes her come from? For her, just as for St. Paul, “to live is Christ”. This beautiful “Lily of Palestine” became Sr. Maryam of Jesus Crucified in the Carmelite Order. Both humble guardian of the grille and formidable forewoman, she was often visited by Jesus and Mary. The words she transmits from them, pearls of great price, are significant for us today as they enlighten the future of our broken world. Maryam died in Bethlehem in her 33rd year, on August 26, 1878, shortly after the birth of Thérèse of Lisieux in France. Pope John Paul II beatified her on November 13, 1983. It is impossible to know Maryam without falling in love with her, without yearning for holiness, at her school.

Book excerpt: A Treatise on the True Devotion on the Blessed Virgin or True Devotion to Mary is considered the greatest book on the Blessed Virgin Mary ever written and has been recommended and practiced by eight Popes. This is the original "scrupulously faithful" translation by Father Frederick William Faber. The great Marian Pope, Blessed Pope John Paul II practiced this Devotion to Mary, in his Letter to the Monfort Fathers he says: "A work destined to become a classic of Marian spirituality was published 160 years ago. St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort wrote the Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin at the beginning of the 1700s, but the manuscript remained practically unknown for more than a century. When, almost by chance, it was at last discovered in 1842 and published in 1843, the work was an instant success, proving extraordinarily effective in spreading the "true devotion" to the Most Holy Virgin. "When we praise her, love her, honor her or give anything to her, it is God who is praised, God who is loved, God who is glorified, and it is to God that we give, through Mary and in Mary (Treatise on True Devotion, n. 225)." Included is a supplementary 33-Day Preparation for Total Consecration. Paintings are by Bartolome Esteban Murillo.

Book excerpt: BIOGRAPHERS have already told us much about St. Louis De Montfort and the Rosary; now, with this first English edition of THE SECRET OF THE ROSARY, we can listen to Montfort speaking for himself. Drawing upon his own experience as well as upon the experience of others, he endeavors to bring home to the reader, “in a simple and straightforward manner,” as he himself tells us, the authentic message of the Rosary; namely, that it is a veritable school of Christian life. He sees it as including essentially the meditation of the mysteries of the life, death and glory of Jesus and Mary, with a view not only to honoring but especially imitating their virtues as held up to our consideration in each mystery. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Joseph is a descendant of the House of King David. After being espoused to the Virgin Mary, he found her with child and, being "a just man and unwilling to put her to shame" (St. Matthew 1:19), decided to divorce her quietly; but an angel told him that the child was the Son of God and was conceived by the Holy Ghost. Obeying the angel, Joseph took Mary as his wife. After Jesus' birth at Bethlehem in Judea, where the Holy family received the Magi, an angel warned Joseph and Mary about the impending violence against the child by King Herod the Great of Judea, whereupon they fled to Egypt. Years later the angel again appeared to Joseph, informing him of Herod's death and instructing him to return to the Holy Land. Avoiding Bethlehem out of fear of Herod's successor, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus settled in Nazareth (St. Matthew 2:22-23) in Galilee, where Joseph taught his craft of carpentry to Jesus. Joseph is last mentioned in the Gospels when he and Mary frantically searched 3 days for the 12 year old Jesus in Jerusalem, where they found him in the Temple (St. Luke 2:41-48). Joseph's death is believed to have occurred before Jesus' public ministry, as he is no longer mentioned. Although the veneration of Joseph seems to have begun in Egypt, the earliest Western devotion to him dates from the early 14th century, when the Servites, an order of mendicant friars, observed his feast on March 19, the traditional day of his death. Among the subsequent promoters of the devotion was Pope Sixtus IV, who introduced it at Rome c. 1479, and the celebrated 16th-century mystic St. Teresa of Avila. Already patron of Mexico, Canada, and Belgium, Joseph was declared patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870. In 1955 Pope Pius XII established the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker as May 1 in counter-celebration to the Communists' May Day. Recitation of the Little Office of Saint Joseph has been granted a partial indulgence according to the Enchiridion of Indulgences. However, there is no current version of this Office that conforms to the modern Office of the Church: the Liturgy of the Hours. This new composition of the indulgenced Office retains the essential structure of the original, while integrating it into modern usage. As Wednesday is traditionally viewed as being linked to Saint Joseph, it would be especially significant to pray this Office each Wednesday.
