Do I take care of my little sister for my parents as they go clean the church or not? What if there’s an unseen enemy lurking about putting thoughts in our minds, trying to get us to stumble and make the wrong choices? What if we have the power in God’s strength to overcome those intrusive thoughts? The Little Devil That Couldn’t is such a story. This story pulls back the curtain, if you will, and puts evil on display. Little Joey, the main character of this story, has this unseen enemy, but seen by us, trying to get him to stumble and make wrong choices. He is tasked with the responsibility of taking his little sister to the park for the afternoon. Then this little devil shows up, trying to get him aggravated and upset with the demands of the situation and his little sister. Joey would rather be hanging out with his school friends, but his little sister wants to play longer and even wants ice cream. As little Joey begins to overcome all the suggestions of this little devil, you see something happen in his heart and life. He repents of his thoughts and actions toward his little sister and the request of his parents. The little devil sees he is getting nowhere fast and eventually moves on to an easier target, William the school bully. As Joey gets home after an exhausting day, his parents thank him for his obedience and rewards him and his sister with something all kids love to do. Enjoy this story. And I pray it challenges, uplifts, and encourages you in your walk with the Lord.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • A sweeping, genre-bending “masterpiece” (Minneapolis Star Tribune) exploring Black art, music, and culture in all their glory and complexity—from Soul Train, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Whitney Houston, and Beyoncé ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Chicago Tribune, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Dallas Morning News, Publishers Weekly “Gorgeous essays that reveal the resilience, heartbreak, and joy within Black performance.”—Brit Bennett, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Vanishing Half “I was a devil in other countries, and I was a little devil in America, too.” Inspired by these few words, spoken by Josephine Baker at the 1963 March on Washington, MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow and bestselling author Hanif Abdurraqib has written a profound and lasting reflection on how Black performance is inextricably woven into the fabric of American culture. Each moment in every performance he examines—whether it’s the twenty-seven seconds in “Gimme Shelter” in which Merry Clayton wails the words “rape, murder,” a schoolyard fistfight, a dance marathon, or the instant in a game of spades right after the cards are dealt—has layers of resonance in Black and white cultures, the politics of American empire, and Abdurraqib’s own personal history of love, grief, and performance. Touching on Michael Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Billy Dee Williams, the Wu-Tan Clan, Dave Chappelle, and more, Abdurraqib writes prose brimming with jubilation and pain. With care and generosity, he explains the poignancy of performances big and small, each one feeling intensely familiar and vital, both timeless and desperately urgent. Filled with sharp insight, humor, and heart, A Little Devil in America exalts the Black performance that unfolds in specific moments in time and space—from midcentury Paris to the moon, and back down again to a cramped living room in Columbus, Ohio. WINNER OF THE ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL AND THE GORDON BURN PRIZE • FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD AND THE PEN/DIAMONSTEIN-SPIELVOGEL AWARD ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, Time, The Boston Globe, NPR, Rolling Stone, Esquire, BuzzFeed, Thrillist, She Reads, BookRiot, BookPage, Electric Lit, The Rumpus, LitHub, Library Journal, Booklist

Graduate high school, marry the mayor's son, get my degree and take over my mother's company. I don't want it - I don't want any of it - but I'd never say that out loud. Girls like me aren't supposed to speak our minds. We're supposed to smile and look pretty and do as we're told without argument. I keep my mouth shut for an easy life. A boring life. But then I met him. Xander Reid doesn't follow rules. He's a cocky bad boy with a devil may care attitude and a tongue bar I can't stop staring at. He treats life like a game and dares me to play with him. And even though I know he's bad for me, I'm not sure how much longer I can resist. XANDER Lakewood is supposed to be a punishment. A way to fix me and my unusual take on life. Seven months before the end of my senior year, my parents ship me off to live in a strange town with a family I barely know and a private school full of entitled rich kids. They seem to forget change doesn't bother me. I get bored easily, can't sit still for five minutes and nothing holds my attention. But then I met her. Jordyn James isn't as innocent as she makes out to be. She's a bad girl trapped in a life fit for a princess, desperate for freedom from the chains that hold her back. Making her mine just might be the worst thing I've ever done, and yet I regret nothing. This is a 65k word, opposites attract romance with themes some readers might find offensive. Complete standalone with a HEA and no cliffhanger.

National literacy advocate John Corcoran continues to help bring illiteracy out of the shadows with this autobiography, "The Teacher Who Couldn't Read." It is the amazing true story of a man who triumphed over his illiteracy and who has become one of the nation's leading literacy advocates. His shocking and emotionally moving story-from being a child who was failed by the system, to an angry adolescent, a desperate college student, and finally an emerging adult reader-touched audiences of such national television shows as the Oprah Winfrey Show, 20/20, the Phil Donahue Show, and Larry King Live. His story was also featured in national magazines such as Esquire, Biography, Reader's Digest, and People. "The Teacher Who Couldn't Read" is a gripping tale of triumph over America's national literacy crisis-- a story you'll thoroughly enjoy while being enlightened to a national tragedy.

Book excerpt: Welcome to "No one told me I couldn't." This is a collection of short, fictional stories about ordinary people with exceptional natural abilities. This book contains 10 stories that I call "believable science fiction." Each story is unique by itself and I hope you will find them entertaining. The first story is called "A Blue Feather Fell From the Clouds." It tells the story of intrigue between several teen athletes and a special blue jay. The rest of the book is filled with mystery and suspense in stories about Sea Turtles and an electrifying rattlesnake. Meet a cold, vicious crystal-alien escapee. There is something for everyone this time around . When I began writing this book, I decided to write about the nature of people and how easy it is to make a difference. Sometimes that difference changes a person for better or worse. If you enjoy wholesome entertainment, curl up on the couch and begin reading.
