Douglas, Abraham Lincoln challenged the incumbent Democratic senator from Illinois to a series of debates. This volume contains their masterful arguments as well as two speeches, one by each candidate. Paving the way for modern debates between political candidates, the Lincoln-Douglas debates were more than formal discussions between opponents. Lincoln lost the election; but the speeches brought him to national attention and helped propel him to the Presidency in 1860.

Book excerpt: The Lincoln-Douglas debates remain our culture's model of what public political debate ought to be. This new edition of the complete transcripts of the debates and eyewitness interpretations of them (previously published under the title Created Equal?) includes a new Foreword by David Zarefsky. Zarefsky analyzes the rhetoric of the speeches, showing how Lincoln and Douglas chose their arguments and initiated a debate that shook the nation. Their eloquent, statesmanlike discussion of the morality of slavery illustrates the masterful use of rhetorical strategies and tactics in the public forum: a form of discourse that has nearly disappeared from the political scene today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln-Douglas Debates of 1858 A new edition of the speeches made by Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln in the set debate during the Illinois senatorial canvass of 1858 would seem a worthy and appropriate part of the general commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of that event. While the campaign was local in its inception, it became national in its sigui ficance and in its results. The issues as brought out in the debate, especially in the speech of Douglas at Freeport, widened, if they did not open, the breach between him and the southern Democrats, made a Split in the convention of 1860 a foregone conclusion, and thereby paved the way for Republican success and the election of Abraham Lin coln to the presidency. The debate also marked the high - tide of the stump method of campaigning; it furnishes, through the unusual space given to it in news paper reports, an Opportunity to study this unique phe nomenon of frontier life; while the increasing number of printing presses, the extension of the mail routes, and consequent change in campaign methods, lend to this canvass the melancholy interest of a passing Show. The speeches themselves are of a high order of debate, and of unusual import; those of Douglas set forth his untenable position and his impossible theory in the clearest terms; those of Lincoln state the arguments of the new Repub lican party as they had not been outlined before; and the combined effect of the whole is a survey of the political aspect of the day not to be found elsewhere. Douglas, in the Senatorial Campaign of 1858 in Illinois: Together With Certain Preceding Speeches of Each at Chicago, Springfield, Etc The passage of the kansas-nebraska Act made clear to the North that the South would accept no limitations for slavery The position oi the Southern leaders, in which they had the substantial backing of their constituents, was that slaves were property and that the Constitution, having guaranteed the protection of property to all the Citizens of the commonwealth, a slaveholder was depnved of his constitutional rights as a Citizen if his control of this portion of his property was in any way inter fered With or restricted The argument in behalf of this extreme Southern claim had been shaped most eloquently and most forcibly by John C Calhoun during the years between 1830 and 1850 The Calhoun opinion was represented a few years later in the Presidential candidacy of John C Breckin ridge The contention of the more extreme of the Northern opponents of slavery voters, whose spokes men were William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, James G Birney, Owen Lovejoy, and others, was that the Constitution in so far as it recognised slavery (which it did only by implication) was a compact With evil They held that the Fathers had been led into this compact unwittingly and Without full realisation of the responsibilities that they were assuming for the perpetuation of a great wrong They refused to accept the view that later generations of American Citizens were to be bound for an indefi nite period by this error of Judgment on the part of the Fathers They proposed to get rid of slavery.
