Book excerpt: A landmark book that completely transforms our understanding of the crisis of liberalism, from two pre-eminent intellectuals Why did the West, after winning the Cold War, lose its political balance? In the early 1990s, hopes for the eastward spread of liberal democracy were high. And yet the transformation of Eastern European countries gave rise to a bitter repudiation of liberalism itself, not only there but also back in the heartland of the West. In this brilliant work of political psychology, Ivan Krastev and Stephen Holmes argue that the supposed end of history turned out to be only the beginning of an Age of Imitation. Reckoning with the history of the last thirty years, they show that the most powerful force behind the wave of populist xenophobia that began in Eastern Europe stems from resentment at the post-1989 imperative to become Westernized. Through this prism, the Trump revolution represents an ironic fulfillment of the promise that the nations exiting from communist rule would come to resemble the United States. In a strange twist, Trump has elevated Putin's Russia and Orbán's Hungary into models for the United States. Written by two pre-eminent intellectuals bridging the East/West divide, The Light that Failed is a landmark book that sheds light on the extraordinary history of our Age of Imitation.

I have delayed their publication in the hope that with process of time I might, by further reading and thought, be able to expand and modify them, so as to make them more worthy of presentation to the public in the form of a book. This hope has been so meagerly realized that it now seems best to let them go forth, with all their imperfections on their head, hardly at all altered from the form in which they were delivered." --From the preface

Book excerpt: Marxist ideology is the only fully scientific ideology, the only one able to guide mankind toward the settlement of fundamental social problems and to point out the royal road for the proletariat to take in its march toward socialism and communism. Without Marxism, modern people cannot establish true social ideals, nor can they engage in the rational pursuit of values. Without Marxism, modern people cannot choose the correct path of development, nor can they build up new forms of civilizations. Without Marxism, modern people would never base their commitments to schedule the consensus-building effort and support the consensus-building process on any irrefutably and sufficiently sound theoretical foundations.

Book excerpt: When the Christian church was first forming in the time of the apostles, a heresy that still threatens the church today called Gnosticism started to form. This heresy was battled by the writings of Irenæus to correct theological thinking about God, Jesus and the Bible at large. This early church father was instrumental in fighting false teaching in the early centuries when there were a lot of questions about the legitimacy of Christianity in the face of the persecutions of the Roman Empire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the port of Pireaus, Greece, the early summer rains stopped and the clouds cleared away. The sun, slowly gliding onto the sea, cast its last rays on the German fleet. After the night patrols ran past and the sound of jackboots faded, Petros Zervas, the young resistance fighter, ran down the hill and, for the first time in years, saw Lela Lellos. Eleven years had passed since the thirty-year-old Lela contributed to the delinquency of fourteen-year-old Petros, taking his virginity and transforming him into a man. He then disappeared, leaving Lela with nothing but her memory and his name tattooed on her stomach. She had no idea that Petros has turned out to be a successful young man. What she does not know is that he has also become a wanted man pursued by the Germans whom he is fighting in Pireaus. But one man has seen Petros and believes he can rescue a religious icon held captive by German chaplains who will never appreciate its power or understand its beauty. Only Petros can perform a miracle for old Spyros Kanares; if he fails, though, both will surely end up in front of a firing squad. This compelling tale of heroism, based on true events, culminates in an unforgettable attack on the German fleet anchored in the port of Piraeus, as a powerful love story is tested in the crucible of war.

Book excerpt: THE work of Irenæus Against Heresies is one of the most precious remains of early Christian antiquity. It is devoted, on the one hand, to an account and refutation of those multiform Gnostic heresies which prevailed in the latter half of the second century; and, on the other hand, to an exposition and defence of the Catholic faith. Book excerpt: Historians of Latin American philosophy have paid relatively little attention to the development of philosophical analysis in Latin America. There are two reasons for this neglect: First, they have been primarily concerned with the forma tive period of philosophical development, in particular with the so called "founders" of La ti n American philosophy. And second. philosophical analysis did not become a noticeable philosophical trend in Latin America until recent years. True. a nunber of Latin American philosophers took notice of Moore. Russell. the members of the Vienna Circle and other important figures in the analytic movement qui te early. But these were isolated instances that lacked the sustained effort and broad base indispensible to make a serious impact in the development of Latin American philosophy. That has changed now. There are not only good numbers of philosophers who work within the analytic tradition, but also some journals and institutes dedicated to the analytic mode of philosophizing. It is. therefore. most appropriate to publish a collection of articles which would introduce the reader of philosophy to the most representative analytic material produced so far in Latin America. Indeed. it is not only appropriate. but also necessary. since most of the published analytic literature to date is scattered in various journals, sometimes of difficult access. Moreover, not all that has been published is representative of the best already produced and of the potential that the movement has in Latin America.
