Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens's other Christmas classic, with a new introduction by Dickens's great-great-grandson, Gerald Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord during the years 1846-1849, just about the time he was completing David Copperfield. In this charming, simple retelling of the life of Jesus Christ, adapted from the Gospel of St. Luke, Dickens hoped to teach his young children about religion and faith. Since he wrote it exclusively for his children, Dickens refused to allow publication. For eighty-five years the manuscript was guarded as a precious family secret, and it was handed down from one relative to the next. When Dickens died in 1870, it was left to his sister-in-law, Georgina Hogarth. From there it fell to Dickens's son, Sir Henry Fielding Dickens, with the admonition that it should not be published while any child of Dickens lived. Just before the 1933 holidays, Sir Henry, then the only living child of Dickens, died, leaving his father's manuscript to his wife and children. He also bequeathed to them the right to make the decision to publish The Life of Our Lord. By majority vote, Sir Henry's widow and children decided to publish the book in London. In 1934, Simon & Schuster published the first American edition, which became one of the year's biggest bestsellers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study the life, ministry, and teaching of Jesus Christ in harmony—with all the relevant material from the Gospels placed side by side on the page and in chronological sequence. The goal of this volume by author and teacher J. Dwight Pentecost is to help you know Jesus better by getting a clearer picture of him through the four Gospels—the books that directly depict his life, his ministry, and his heart. To show the harmony of the gospels, passages are arranged in parallel columns when more than one is cited so that you can easily see the accounts beside one another. This simple, logical presentation of the complete parallel text with the outline greatly simplifies your study of Christ's life. A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ is ideal for use with its companion volume, The Words and Works of Jesus Christ, a comprehensive study of the life of Christ. A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ also makes an outstanding parallel Scripture text for any study of the gospels or the life of Christ. All Scripture is in the New International Version (NIV).

Book excerpt: In this important study Hays argues against the mainstream that any attempt to account for the nature and method of Paul's theological language must first reckon with the centrality of narrative elements in his thought. Through an in-depth investigation of Galatians 3:1-4:11, Hays shows that the framework of Paul's thought is neither a system of doctrines nor his personal religious experience but the "sacred story" of Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: In the two comprehensive volumes of his monumental work on the life of our Lord Jesus Christ Father Prat has left to the world an enduring masterpiece. In clearly intelligible phrase the author conveys to us the earthly career of our Lord and Saviour, building up from the sacred books and from all authentic sources the background of the scenes described and the deeds enacted. At the same time copious notes keep us in touch with every phase of scholarly research pertinent to our subject. Thus is conveyed a true, realistic, and genuinely historical account of our Saviour's appearance among men... In these two volumes the reader is constantly brought into intimate contact with the scenes and actors in the great drama, and above all with the central figure, Christ himself. We cannot lay aside these volumes without having acquired a more practical and more profound appreciation of Christ himself, Son of God and Son of Mary. To him be glory, praise, and benediction forever! -Joseph Husslein, S.J., Ph.D., General Editor, Science and Culture Series St. Louis University

Book excerpt: As the times change and the world seemingly spinning ever faster around us, and with responsibilities and the distractions of the digital world also ever increasing, the question may appropriately be asked, where is respite to be found? What anchor for the mind and soul? To those asking these or similar questions, this book is an invitation to slow down and rise above the flurry of distraction to reconnect with something much higher. "The Tree of Life" presents the familiar story of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, directly from the Gospels of the New Testament, but with the added benefit of reading seamlessly like a captivating novel. With every one of the 3,779 Gospel verses being included in this work, this fresh perspective of these high and holy paradigms brings a view all too often forgotten or neglected today. What this book provides, in short, is the source material common to all denominations of Christianity and beyond. These teachings come straight from the mouth of Christianity's founder, and are arranged and merged directly from the sacred writings. If you are a seeker on the path of Christian enlightenment, "The Tree of Life" is a magnificent place to start, or even continue, that journey. With non-denominational instructions just as relevant today as when they were given anciently, answers to deep questions are immediately discoverable to the honest student who seeks to study at the feet of the Master.
