Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Story of an Otter The otter has long seemed to me worthy of serious attention, if only for the successful struggle it has waged against those exterminating agencies under which the badger, the wildcat, the polecat and the marten have all but succumbed. Its survival throughout Great Britain is due, partly to its endurance and resources when hunted, partly to qualities and habits which differentiate it from the other creatures of the wild. Its scent, for instance, unlike that of fox or badger, to which every tike and lurcher will stoop, is noticed by few dogs save hounds that have been trained to own it; and the outlawed beast thus gains a certain immunity from destruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Otter: A Manual for Sportsmen and Naturalists IN these days otter-hunting is a popular sport, and in consequence there are now many more packs of otterhounds than was formerly the case. Of all beasts of chase in this country, the otter is the one about which we know least, for he is a great wanderer, a creature Of the night, and therefore difficult to study systematically. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seals, Sea-Lions, and Sea Otter of the Pacific Coast: Descriptions, Life History Notes, Photographs and Drawings The adult male is about 4-1/ 2 feet in length and weighs up to 85 pounds; the female 4 feet and 55 pounds; the newborn young 16 to 22 inches and 3 to 5 pounds. The dark brown fur of the sea otter is 1 to 1-1/ 2 inches long with scattered guard hairs. In the adult these hairs are often black' or silver. The face is light in color, and is flatter than that of any seal. Sea otters are gregarious, and a group of a hundred or more may remain together for a long time, resting or playing near some favorite kelp bed. When the weather is mild the animals spend most of their time in the water but during storms they take refuge among the rocks along the beach. The sea otter walks clumsily on land and early fur hunters took advantage of this fact to hunt them with clubs at favorite hauling-out places in stormy weather. The large, flat molar teeth of the sea otter are distinctive, differ ing greatly from the sharply pointed molars of seals and sea-lions. Many sea otters are exceptionally tractable and will take food from the hand within a few minutes after capture. Such animals seem almost oblivious to human presence. Vocal sounds vary from the harsh kitten-like mewing of the pup to the grunts, growls, and high pitched shrieks of the adults. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of My Own Times: Or, the Life and Adventures of William Otter, Sen;, Comprising a Series of Events, and Musical Incidents Altogether Original The purpose for which the author principally intends his book, you will find in the sequel of this preface; that many words will not be spent to inform all those into whose hands his production may fall, that it is not expressly for the use and instruction of children - who, being as it were, blank paper, taking all upon credit; if that were the authors intention, the first comer might write saint or devil upon it, which he pleased. To avoid such a verdict being pronounced, he does not intend either to labor very hard; that it was hastily got up, and ushered into the world before it was properly matured - as hasty publications are denounced by the public as a "crime." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrate Christmas with the inspiration for the beloved Jim Henson film — in print after over 40 years. In 1977, when Jim Henson debuted the now-classic film Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, few knew it was based on a story written and illustrated by Russell and Lillian Hoban, creators of Bread and Jam for Frances and other treasured children's books. With an enduring score by the great Paul Williams, the movie remains a holiday tradition in homes across America. Now the book that started it all is back in print, in a beautiful gift edition that will thrill Muppets fans young and old. Inspired by the classic tale "The Gift of the Magi," the story begins in a poor country cottage, as Emmet Otter dreams of buying Ma a piano for Christmas, while Ma dreams of buying Emmet a guitar. When a village talent contest is announced, both imagine their dreams coming true. But what they don't imagine finding is their real reward — the power of love, family, and hope in hard times. It is a story that reaches into a reader's heart and reminds us all that fortune favors the brave. A Bank Street College of Education Best Children's Book of the Year "[A] welcome reissue of the Hobans' 1971 story . . . Colorful illustrations of the close-knit animal community contain plenty of warmth." —The Horn Book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In focusing on the story of Darwin's religious doubts, scholars too often overlook Darwin's positive contribution to the study of religion. J. David Pleins traces Darwin's journey in five steps. He begins with Darwin's global voyage, where his encounter with religious and cultural diversity transformed his understanding of religion. Surprisingly, Darwin wrestles with serious theological questions even as he uncovers the evolutionary layers of religion from savage roots. Next, we follow Darwin as his doubts about traditional biblical religion take root, affecting his career choice and marriage to Emma Wedgwood. Pleins then examines Darwin's secret notebooks as he searches for a materialist theory of religion. Again, other surprises loom as Darwin's reading of Comte's three stages of religion's development actually predate his reading of Malthus. Pleins explores how Darwin applied his discovery to the realm of ethics by formulating an evolutionary view of the "Golden Rule" in his Descent of Man. Finally, he considers Darwin's later reflections on the religion question, as he wrestled with whether his views led to atheism, agnosticism, or a new kind of theism. The Evolving God concludes by looking at some of the current religious debates surrounding Darwin and suggests the need for a deeper appreciation for Darwin as a religious thinker. Though he grew skeptical of traditional Christian dogma, Darwin made key discoveries concerning the role and function of religion as a natural evolutionary phenomenon.
