Even to the numerous members cf the church which in this country has been formed by the ministers in connection with the late Mr. Wesley, the events of his life are very imper featly known and the Christian professors [of other sects hold Opinions of the founder and na ture of M ethodism, so inaccurate, that this his tory has been ardently desired, - to impart iry'or mation to the Societies, and to correct illiberal mis takes. Charles Wesley, M.A The careful reader will at once perceive that Dr. Whitehead is no ordinary writer. The elegance, strength and perspicuity of his lan guage, the facility and faithfulness of his delineations, amply qualify him for the acceptable performance of the task which Mr. Wesley, in confidence, intrusted to him. With the hope that the efforts which I have made to republish this valuable work, and which have been attended with great expense, will be duly appreciated, and that the work itself may be the means of further extending the public acquaintance with the founders, Doc trines and early usages of a dearly cherished religious institution, I remain the Public's humble and obedient servant in the bonds of the Gospel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of John Wesley The author has so grouped the leading events in the life- of Mr. Wesley as to present in as small compass a fair and distinct likeness of the great Founder of Methodism. It is a miniature representation, but large and distinct enough- to give our young people a correct idea of the man and his work. We think the book opportiae, and trust it will do much good. Our children should be aught to know and veninerate the character of the man who has done so much for the world, and to whom we as a Church are indebted for our existence. It is a fault of the present generation of Methodists that they know so little about him. We place this memoir in our catalogue with the hope that it will soon find its way into every Sunday-school library in the land, and that it may stimulate thousands to a better life. John Wesley, M.A The Indians were found to be inaccessible, and he began work among the colonists. He labored in Georgia for two years, when he was compelled to return to England, having suffered much, acquired three European languages, preached to the scattered settlers, and taken steps to give the Gospel to the Negroes and the Indians. As he was nearing his native shores in January, 1737, Wesley wrote: I went to America to convert Indians, but oh, who shall convert me 1 During his absence, Whitfield had become a flaming evangelist, and having moved all London and Bristol, had just set sail for Georgia. Wesley was yet to receive the new light and the needed impulse. He met Peter Bohler, and was amazed to hear Of the holiness and happiness which sprang from living faith. Wesley studied the New Testament more earnestly, and began extem'poraneous prayer. An instantaneous change of heart was what staggered him most. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Centenary Life of Wesley The attention of every Christian in the English-speaking world will probably be drawn, sooner or later, during this Centenary Year of John Wesley, to the life of the remarkable man whom Churchmen and Nonconformists - those who still call themselves after his name, and those who do not - combine to praise for his zeal, faith, power, and the great work which he did for the cause of true heartfelt religion. Several memoirs of Wesley have been written, but, in adding to their number, we do so in the hope that the present one may meet a want which the Centenary Year will create. M., Sometime Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, and Founder of the Methodist Societies Vsruons Lives or Memoirs of the Founder of Me thodism have already been laid before the public. But it has been frequently remarked that such of these as contain the most approved accounts of Mr. Wesley, have been carried out to a length which obstructs their circulation, by the intermixture of details com paratively uninteresting beyond the immediate circle of Wesleyan Methodism. The present Life, therefore, without any design to supersede larger publications, has been prepared with more special reference to go neral readers. But, as it is contracted within moderate limits chie y by the exclusion of extraneous matter, it will, it is hoped, be found suficiently comprehensive to give the reader an adequate view of the life, labours and opinions of the eminent individual who is its sub ject; and to afford the means of correcting the most material errors and misrepresentations which have had currency respecting him. On several points the Author has had the advantage of consulting unpub lished papers, not known to preceding biographers, and which have enabled him to place some particulars in a more satisfactory light.
