Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of St. Simon Stock When the whole nation was laid under Interdict, as happened in the year 1208, the faithful, no matter how free from all culpa bility, were sure to feel the direful effects of the ecclesiastical ban. Local Interdicts, of rather frequent occurrence, brought the selfsame inconveniences to all who came within the sphere of the ecclesiastical sen tence The scandalous and irreligious con duct of King and Noble that called forth those Spiritual penalties was ill example to the great body of the people. In addition to the deprivation of the ordinary Spiritual helps for the people there was a partisan animosity begotten in the minds of many by those recurring contests. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Lives of the Saints Action of the mind on itself has ever been the tendency of the scientific inquirer. If such attempts have any real value, it is in the evidence they bring forward of our profound ignorance of the most simple phenomena of the interior and unseen life - that child sleep ing so peacefully in most of us, only occasion ally stirring in the dreams that we learn in time to disregard. And unlike the aesthetic critic it is impossible for us to ignore the reality of these experiences of the Saints. For they have no intrinsic beauty, being really but a kind of profound logic following on that postulate Let it be granted that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. In the ex periences of St. Teresa or St. John of the Cross there is nothing that is of any pos sible value if the actual experiences told so coldly never really happened. And indeed, when we inquire more closely into the scienceof mysticism, we find scarcely beauty at all, only a kind of tragedy whose end we cannot see - a tragedy that is really after all only a comedy, so that it should end happily. And mysticism, regarded rightly not as the hysteri cal profession of those who in contemplating some bleeding Christ have lost that temper ance and sanity which it is the profound busi ness of criticism to preserve, but regarded as the hard and crystallized logic of some mighty argument, is really not a beautiful thing at all, in that almost its first requirement is a denial of life, a dislike and contempt for the beauty of the world. Entirely without humour, it has at least to this extent in uenced every school of Christian thought in that Christianity gener ally denies humour to God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of St. Bernard Like St. John, the object of his constant solicitude was to unite Christians in the living bonds of the Gos pel. That this unity was only to be preserved by the universal supremacy of one earthly head of the Church, was Bernard's firm belief, and this was the groundbf his devotion to the See of Rome, which appears to have been rather ideal than actual; he venerated the Popes not as they were, but as be deemed they might be; and the stem and unsparing reproofs which he directed against their corruptions, afford abundant proof that they had not attained the standard of his expectations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Saint Andrew Nothing can be more conducive to the spiritual welfare of the Faithful than to meditate on the virtues, and to consider the example, of the Saints, the chosen friends and servants of Jesus Christ. Hence, we are happy to learn that a zealous Catholic publisher has undertaken to publish a cheap edition of Lives of Saints, and we beg to recommend this work to the perusal of all faithful Christians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Teresa, Vol. 2 The long delay which has ensued between the publication of this volume and that of its predecessor, has not been owing to any abandonment of the design of the complete work, but mainly to an attempt to make the translation of the Letters of St. Teresa as perfect as possible, and to arrange them in such a manner as not to interfere too much with the onward progress of the narrative of her Life. But, after all, they cannot be used for this purpose as much as could be wished, and it has been found impossible to persevere with the original design of publishing all the letters in English. Such a plan would have involved the extension of the work to four or five volumes. It is with much regret that the design has been given up, and the plan followed in the present volume adopted in its place. I mean that I was in my first year at St. Boniface, and there were still stage-coaches on the road in those primitive times; at any rate, there was one which plied between Camford and Thrapston in Northamptonshire, and I found myself outside that coach one day, and occupying the box seat, with "old Topham" on the box. I quite forget where I was going, and I only remember two incidents on the journey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Drawing heavily on his memoirs, historian Ladurie offers a wonderful portrait of life with Louis, focusing on issues of hierarchy and rank in this tightly controlled universe. Illustrations.
