It appears to me that no more satisfactory method can be employed of doing honour to this great bishop and orator, who excites our admiration in proportion to our closer study and knowledge of him. Our acquaintance with Chrysostom is mainly derived from his own works and from the dialogue of Palladius, to which may be added different pieces of information to be found in the pages of Socrates, Sozomen, Theodoret, or Zosimus. Tillemont, in a volume of "Memoirs," and after him, Stilting (Acta S.S. September, vol. iv.), have done a great deal to arrange in order the facts collated from these different sources. Neander (Der keilige Chrysostomus, 1st edition, Berlin, 1821-1822, 3rd edition, 1848), has principally devoted himself to revealing to his readers the soul of John, and to pointing out to their observation his original and noble qualities. John Chrysostom, Vol. 1: Archbishop of Constantinople, on the Gospel of St. John, Translated, With Notes and Indices The Benedictine Editor has already noticed the principal points in which these Homilies differ from others in which St. Chrysostom comments upon Holy Scripture. They are far more controversial than is usual with him, and the part devoted to moral exhortation is shorter. This may be partly owing to the number of passages in St. John which bear on the doctrine of our Lord's Person and His Divine and Human Natures, But it seems further that they were delivered to a select audience at an early hour of the day. For toward the latter part of Hom. xxxi. he contrasts the coolness of the morning, in which they were assembled, with the mid-day heat, in which the woman of Samaria listened to our Lord, And the character of the instruction given almost unquestionably marks the hearers as having been less miscellaneous, and less liable to be supposed wanting in points of common duty, than those whom he generally addressed. They do not give their own date, but are referred to by the Author, while still at Antioch, as already published, in Hom, vii. on 1 Cor. ii. 8. Tr. p. 82. 'However, the manner of this way of knowledge and of that hath already been declared in the Gospel; and, not to be continually handling the same topic, thither do we refer our readers.' John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople, on the Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1: Translated, With Notes and Indices The present volume of St. Chrysostom on the Acts of the Apostles has been delayed for some time by the difficulty of fixing the d104. Some farther account of the grounds on which this has been done will be given in the Preface, which is reserved for the next volume. It may suffice for the present to say, that these Homilies appear to have been less carefully reported than usual, and published without a revision by the Author. The printed text was formed for the most part (Erasmus's Latin Version entirely) from a manuscript, said to be of the tenth century, in which these Homilies are given in a very different form, evidently the work of a later hand, and intended to make them read more smoothly. The earlier text, shewn to be such by internal evidence, and alone followed in the Catena and all other ancient extracts and compilations, is preserved in other Mss. and appears to have been in general disregarded by former editors, from its difficulty. The Translation was originally made from Savile's d104, by the Rev. J. Walker, M. A. of Brasenose College, and the Rev. J. Sheppard, M. A. of Oriel College, Oxford. The Editors are much indebted to the Rev. II. Browne, M. A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, who has restored the d104 and corrected the Translation accordingly, the difference being frequently so great as to require a passage to be translated anew. He has likewise undertaken to prepare the Greek d104 for publication, and to supply the prefatory matter.
