Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Christian Church in the South In September 1971 I met with the Committee by request and agreed to collaborate with the secretary in writing the book. Scott and I were old friends and worked 1n perfect harmony so that I Was able to complete most of the research and begin the manuscript by Feb ruary 1972. The initial draft of the first five chapters had been written when Scott died on July 17 of that year. The Completion of this history was the cherished dream of my, colleague whose last words to me were, This story must be written: Carry'on! And in obedience to that charge I have completed the book. The purpose of this history has not been to glorify the southern Christian Church or any individual or group of individuals among its clergy and membership. Credit has been g1ven where credit was due, but no attempt has been made to belittle Or ignore errors or defects; and, the Church being an institution composed of human beings there were naturally some of both. The main purpose has been to show what the Christians accomplished and to picture the laborious process necessary to attain their goals. The activities of this Church touched the political, social, and intellectual life, in addition to religious affairs in the geographical area where it existed, and only the highlights of each could be included in this account. Individual ministers, local churches, and area conferences could only be mentioned for the part they played in the overall story. Each church and conference has a history of its own and many individuals merit a full biography, but these are subjects for separate treatment apart from this account. Scott and I were in full agreement that this history should strictly conform to the known facts, and to accomplish this aim every possible means was exerted to uncover all data in existence pertinent to the subject. I accept full responsibility for any proven errors in the account. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Reconstruction in the South The writing of this book was undertaken at the request of the Executive Committee of the American Missionary Association and primarily with its constituency in mind. From the work of that organization, therefore, with which the author is personally familiar, the illustrative matter has largely been drawn, especially in those chapters which describe missionary operations concretely. I have tries to interpret that work in its representative character and in relation to that of the whole group of agencies making for the complete Americanization of the South. Further and particularly the attempt has been to provide a sociological perspective and background for the problems presented by the undeveloped peoples of the South. The approach has been through a particular group of interests, the purpose to throw light on the larger issue involved. The author misses in his book that deliberately laudatory mood which, by the recent usage of high authority, seems to be the proper way for the Northerner to discuss the South. Beginning with the Ogden parties, a succession of distinguished Yankees have journeyed thither on all manner of speech-making occasions. There is so much compelling praise in that marvelously awakening section that these gentlemen have had little difficulty in filling the time allotted by program maker and interviewer with merited congratulations. The echoes of their speeches as reported back home have largely given tone to latter-day Northern thought on Southern problems. But one cannot easily be at the same time both guest and philosopher. That violent epil'copali an nay, this was not the tharaé'ter of Mr. Ellis, he never was a fun of violence, but [low to fpeak, (low to wrath, a man or great fweetnefs and etluanimity of temper, who feltlnio, if ever, carried any thing tii extremes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To put on record some of the principal events which transpired during the life and labors of the early pioneers of African Methodism, seems to be a duty we owe to those worthy men who have preceded us in the arduous work of establishing a Church attended with such wonderful advantages to the colored people of this country. Blind must the man be who cannot see the design of Providence in prompting the hearts of men to resent the religious intolerance which was hurled against them just at the time when the increasing weight of the yoke of bondage bore so heavily on an already oppressed race that they felt its weight could be carried no further, and that they should build for themselves an institution which should be a harbinger of the great freedom which was so soon to follow. This institution, whose foundation was laid with such wonderful care and labor, has done more to convince the world that colored men possessed in a high degree the power of self-government, and that their hearts swelled with the same love of liberty which animated the hearts of the most noble of earth's sons. The phenomenal success of the Church which had its origin in adversity and obscurity, the offspring's of the minds of men whom the world consider uncultured and inexperienced, its rapid development and advancement, its power to surmount all obstacles and its final and signal success, awakens the admiration and wonder of the Christian world. We do not wonder that those who now live and enjoy the great advantages afforded by this strong and prosperous body, should desire to know something of the character and labors of those men who were the favored instruments in the hands of God, by which he established an institution that has done more to develop the moral force and executive power of the descendants of Africa in America than has been accomplished by any other means. It is certain that we have on record no class of men since the days of the Apostles, who having had no intellectual advantages or moral training, who have accomplished such notable work in the enlightenment and elevation and Christianizing a people who were doomed to ignorance, servitude and degradation as have done that class of men. No one can witness the effect of their ready foresight, their wise counsel and heroic actions under such trying circumstances, without being filled with wonder at the amazing goodness of God in directing their course, and admiration for the power that led them with unerring precision through the dark mazes of superstition and oppression, to such signal victory. They trusted in God with faith scarcely less fervent than that of the primitive Christians. They were men of eminent piety and sound integrity, and there was a silent energy accompanying their labors, though done in an unostentatious manner that gave them success wherever engaged and silenced all opposition. Thus the subject of our narrative was one of the favored ones who were permitted to take an active part in establishing and building up the A. M. E. Church in the Western and Southern states.
