Book Synopsis General Peter Muhlenberg by : Michael Cecere
Download or read book General Peter Muhlenberg written by Michael Cecere and published by Journal of the American Revolu. This book was released on 2020-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of the Legendary Clergyman-Turned-Soldier for the American Cause Standing at the pulpit in his church in the Shenandoah Valley, the preacher borrowed from Ecclesiastes, declaring in a firm voice that "To every thing there is a season . . . ." He then announced, "that there is a time to fight, and that time had now come," and abruptly removed his clerical robe to reveal his colonel's uniform. There is little doubt that this clergyman-turned-soldier uttered words to this effect, but whether he threw off his robe to reveal a gleaming uniform may be embellishment. In General Peter Muhlenberg: A Virginia Officer of the Continental Line, historian Michael Cecere cuts away the romanticism surrounding this fascinating character to present him as a highly capable and dedicated officer who served for seven long years in America's War for Independence; a man of faith who held the high ideals of that office in his conduct with fellow officers and regular soldiers alike. First appointed to lead the 8th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army, Muhlenberg and his troops served under General Charles Lee in the defense of Charleston in 1776. Sent north and promoted to brigadier-general, Muhlenberg participated in the ensuing battles of Brandywine, Germantown, the winter at Valley Forge, and the major clash at Monmouth Courthouse. In 1780, he returned to Virginia and stood at the forefront of Virginia's defense when the British invaded in 1781. At Yorktown, Muhlenberg commanded the continental light infantry troops that stormed Redoubt No. 10, sealing Cornwallis's fate. Focusing on the military career of Muhlenberg, and relying on a judicious amount of primary source material, the author follows Muhlenberg and his troops as they battled some of the most storied adversaries of the war, including John Graves Simcoe's Queen's Rangers, Captain Johann Ewald's German Jaegers, and Banastre Tarleton's British Legion. Admired by George Washington and his fellow officers and men, Muhlenberg was an American patriot who sacrificed much for his country's cause, and truly "lived respected and died regretted by all good men."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Major-General Peter Muhlenberg of the Revolutionary Army In submitting the following pages to the public, the author may be permitted to hope that his trifling contribution to the Revolutionary history of the country will not be received with disfavour. A belief that the materials were of some value, was the first inducement to publication. The second, was the wish to place the services of General Muhlenberg in their proper light; in doing which, however, he has constantly endeavoured to avoid being biassed by the natural prejudice in favour of a relative. The work itself will show that he has anxiously consulted all accessible authorities, and at least endeavoured to draw from them impartial conclusions. Much of the matter referring to the Virginia campaigns has been hitherto unpublished, that part of the war having been much neglected by historians. The materials here collected may therefore in some measure aid future writers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Southern Brigadier Generals in the Revolutionary War by : Douglas M. Branson
Download or read book Southern Brigadier Generals in the Revolutionary War written by Douglas M. Branson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Southern brigadier generals during the Revolutionary War remain largely forgotten or untold, but their experiences were unique. During the war, 13 of the 58 brigadier generals (the lowest-ranking generals) who served under George Washington died because of combat wounds or under British captivity. Seven of those 13 hailed from the southernmost and (excepting Virginia) less populated colonies. Proportionally, they were more likely to become casualties or prisoners than were their Northern counterparts, and they were far more likely than were the more senior major generals (only one of whom died during the war, out of 28 total officers). This book profiles the 18 Southern brigadier generals and their service during the American Revolution. It makes the case that Washington and his brigadier generals, especially the Southern brigadiers, won the war in spite of the major generals, many of whom exhibited cowardice, alcoholism, insubordination, womanizing, or ineffective leadership; more than half of the major generals were effectively cashiered or voluntarily left military service long before Yorktown and the war's conclusion. The author demonstrates that, as much as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and other politicians, the war's brigadier generals should be viewed as founding fathers, too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God Shed His Grace on Thee is a journey through America's past, emphasizing the Christian purposes that compelled explorers and settlers to embrace the perils involved in finding and relocating to its shores. The story continues through the processes of a loosely knit group of colonies uniting to form a nation built upon biblical principles, urged to do so by a determined force of ministers delivering the message of freedom from the pulpit. Evidence is brought to light presenting the proofs that the nation's leadership believed without question that the country was, indeed, a Christian nation. The narrative concludes with the responsibility of believers to carry forward the truth in today's society and the ways that everyone can and should become involved in doing so. The Christian is urged to take their part in the continuing history of this great land-till all success be nobleness, and ev'ry gain divine

Book Synopsis Where a Man Can Go by : Robert P. Davis
Download or read book Where a Man Can Go written by Robert P. Davis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first published account of the life of Major General William Phillips, a British officer whose achievements during the American Revolution place him in the ranks of Britain's most successful generals such as Charles Cornwallis. Although he was a commoner, Phillips rose from the rank of cadet in the Royal Artillery Academy, distinguished himself through remarkable achievements in Europe's Seven Years War, and went on to command a field army in America. This story chronicles his extraordinary abilities, leadership, and innovative style which left a lasting mark on British artillery tactics and military leadership. It provides new insights into the captivity of Burgoyne's army, British operations in Virginia in 1781, and the first detailed account of the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia. In this probing biography, suitable for military buffs and historians alike, Davis uncovers new and fascinating materials about Phillips' life, including his connivance with General Cornwallis to change British strategy in the American southern theater. Though Phillips has largely been denied attention throughout history, Davis' work goes a long way toward restoring his rightful place.
