In some it is the inward experience of the heart which occupies us. The record is that of introspective natures whose mind is their kingdom. In others it is the leading of God in paths of usefulness and active service. It is to the latter class that the present book belongs. Its author has passed lightly over things of even the highest concern, where that was a personal concern only. He occupies himself with the narrative of the movements and the events in which he has taken part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Stuart Cardinal of York and His Times The life of the last grandson of James II., entwined as it was with the more important life of his father and the more stirring life of his brother, would be lamentably incomplete without an account of the men and movements among which he was born and bred, the influences which guided and controlled his development. He, too, stood in the centre of the storm. The vicissitudes of his near kindred were his; the activities that pressed so closely round them moved and shaped his destiny too, in spite of the quiet resolution with which he eventually took his career into his own hands. Torn from his natural setting, the intrigues and struggles that surrounded him, his life were a formless fragment. Apart from the high lights and deep shadows of his brother's history, it must be a colourless, unintelligible irrelevance. Hence it has been necessary to include in this biography much of the political and domestic history that fell within the term of Prince Henry's life and so deeply concerned the fortunes of his house, though he himself played little more than a passive part therein. The book was completed some time before the "King over the Water," but it was judged better to keep it back until the son's life should follow as a sequel to the father's. Both have come from the same long and careful research. Until 1766, the lives naturally overlap. Incidents common to both lives that are given at length in King Jame's life, are noted here as briefly as possible, that the biography should be complete in itself; while much that was taken from the former book, to keep it within the limits of one volume, finds place here. So the quiet shadowed story of the last Stuart prince is the story of the passing of a dynasty; a Gotterdammerung through whose lightning-torn clouds echo clash of battle and long-drawn notes of doom. Book excerpt: "Compelling...A masterly feat...A magnificent, sweeping, authoritative, warm yet wry history."--The Wall Street Journal In this fascinating and intimate portrait of the Stuarts, author Allan Massie takes us deep into one of history's bloodiest and most tumultuous reigns. Exploring the family's lineage from the first Stuart king to the last, The Royal Stuarts is a panoramic history of the family that acted as a major player in the Scottish Wars of Independence, the Union of the Crowns, the English Civil War, the Restoration, and more. Drawing on the accounts of historians past and present, novels, and plays, this is the complete story of the Stuart family, documenting their path from the salt marshes of Brittany to the thrones of Scotland and England and eventually to exile. The Royal Stuarts brings to life figures like Mary, Queens of Scots, Charles I, and Bonnie Prince Charlie, uncovering a family of strong affections and fierce rivalries. Told with panache, this is the gripping true story of backstabbing, betrayal, and ambition gone awry.
