Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Alexander Duff, D.D., LL. D: And of the Mission College Which He Founded in Culcutta As the book is written in a language which is not the writer's mother tongue, it can scarcely be ex pooted to have any literary merits. But it has this peculiar interest, that it is the life of a great Scottish Missionary, written by one of his own sons in the faith on the banks of the Ganges, and by one, too, who was wholly brought up in one of the Christian colleges established and maintained in India by the people of Scotland. As such, the book, the writer believes, will touch a chord in the heart of every true-hem son of Old Caledonia. Book Synopsis The Calcutta Kerani and the London Clerk in the Nineteenth Century by : Sumit Chakrabarti
Download or read book The Calcutta Kerani and the London Clerk in the Nineteenth Century written by Sumit Chakrabarti and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-09-27 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the location and representation of the colonial clerk or the kerani within the cultural and social space of nineteenth century colonial India. It provides a comparative history of the clerk in Calcutta vis-à-vis the clerk in contemporary London in order to understand the manifestations of modernity in these two disparate but intimately related spaces. The volume traces the socio-historical life of the clerk in the newly emerged city-space of Calcutta and reveals how the Bengali kerani became a complex and distinct figure of bureaucratic and colonial modernity. It analyses the techniques of surveillance and ethical training given to the native clerks and offers insights into the role of education in the production and dissemination of knowledge and hegemony in the colonial setting. The author, through a reading of clerk manuals, handbooks and literary representations, highlights the class and cultural identity of the English educated colonial clerk in the new city-space. He also focuses on the ambivalence and unreliability of the clerk or colonial babu who became complicit and gave legitimacy to the empire while personifying a complex modernity within the networks of the colonial administration. This book will be of great interest to students and researchers of colonial and imperial history, literature, cultural studies, city studies, British studies, area studies, commonwealth studies and South Asian studies, particularly those interested in colonial Bengal.
Book Synopsis Scottish Orientalists and India by : Avril Ann Powell
Download or read book Scottish Orientalists and India written by Avril Ann Powell and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2010 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed assessment of how Western thinking about India developed in the nineteenth century, focusing on the exceptionally full lives of the scholar-administrator Muir brothers. Structured around the lives and careers of two Scottish scholar-administrator brothers, Sir William and Dr John Muir, who served in the East India Company and the Raj in North-West India from 1827-1876, this book examines cultural, especially religious and educational attitudes and interactions during the period. The core of the study centres on a detailed examination of the brothers' seminal works on Vedic and Islamic history and society which, researched from Sanskrit and Arabic sources, became standard reference works on India's religions during the Raj. The publication of these works coincided with the outbreak of the Indian Uprising of 1857, on the nature of which William's correspondence with his brother and others allows some reconsideration, especially in respect of Muslim participation. Powell also examines the response of Indian Muslim scholars, particularly of Sir Saiyid Ahmad Khan, to William's critiques of Islam and the brothers' patronage of Oriental scholarship, comparative religion and education during their long retirement back in their native Scotland. The study contributes to current debates about the Scottish contribution to Empire with particular reference to India and to cultural issues. AVRIL A. POWELL is Reader Emerita in the History Department at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Download or read book Pastors, Partners and Paternalists written by Colin Reed and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study tracing the relationships between missionaries and African Church workers in Kenya in the years 1850-1900, as missionaries increasingly adopted imperial assumptions of Western superiority. It tells the story of the first Anglican clergy in Kenya, their wives and colleagues; their rescue from slavery, their education in India and their subsequent work in East Africa. It demonstrates their contribution to the rapid growth of the Church and of indigenous Christian communities. Yet later missionaries were not willing to accord to the Africans the position they had a right to expect. The book recounts their protest and the development of a Church order. Similar events in West Africa have been documented, but this is the first time such a pattern in East Africa has been outlined.
