Book excerpt: Excerpt from The John Crerar Library: First Annual Report for the Year, 1895 The result of the joint action and labors of the respective trustees of the estates of Walter L. Newberry and John Crerar was the draft and subsequent enactment of a bill by the legislature of Illinois, entitled An act to encourage and promote the establishment of free public libraries in cities, villages, and towns in this state. Approved June 17, under which law this corporation is organized. The directors specifically named in the will of Mr. Crerar were first assembled at the residence of Mr. Marshall Field on the twenty-third day of November, 1894, at the request of the Trustees of the Estate of John Crerar. A report was made by the Trustees to the Directors, and action was taken thereupon at the meeting, resulting in the first regular meeting of the Board of Directors held January 2, 1895, at which a complete organization was effected. The work of the first year of the library has been one of organization, and the consideration of different plans involving the character and scope of the library, the creation of by-laws, and the election of Officers and committees. It has been deter mined as the permanent financial policy of the library that its annual expenditures shall not exceed the annual income and the accumulation thereof, and that such policy can be changed only by a vote of two thirds of the members of the Board of Directors. The following year permission was Obtained from the city to erect in Schenley Park a central building dedicated to its purposes, to be followed by the erection of branches in other parts of the city. AS this first structure approached completion, the work Of the Library proper began early in 1895 with the organization of a staff under the leadership of Edwin H.' Anderson and in November of that year the Library was opened to the public with a col lection of about volumes. A dictionary catalogue listing about volumes of the collection had been prepared in pamphlet form and was ready for distribution at the formal opening of the Library to the public. A second impression of this, with slight corrections, was quickly supplied. Since that time no catalogue in book form, attempting to cover the whole of the Library's collec tions, has been issued. A decision was soon reached, how ever, to issue regular monthly bulletins of additions to the Library and these began to appear in April 1896. The next year a department of printing was created and not only the Monthly Bulletin but also the cards for the regular card catalogues of the Library, including those of the branches as established, were issued in printed form. The composition was by linotype and the metal was preserved in the form of type so that lists and catalogues of various kinds might be printed from time to time without incurring the cost of te setting the matter.
