He was minister at Rotterdam, and then followed his brother Samuel, on his death, at Dublin in 1671; and later ended his ministry in London, where he died on J uly 26, 1697. While his own works were few, he published several of his brother's works. An extract from Increase's will in 1719, indicates Nathaniel's disposition of his books. To his own bequest to his son Samuel, of Witney, England, he adds And a considerable part of his Uncle Nathaniel's Library has fallen to his share. 34 The will of Mary Mather, widow of Nathaniel, proved March 6, 1 705, says. The funeral honors paid to the shade of Hector were tame and weak compared with those of the Massachusetts Province in remembrance of the elder Mather. A mourning multi tude that could not be numbered followed him to the grave. The ordinary language of eulogy was too weak to express the veneration and love everywhere felt for the patriarch of the clergy and the friend of the people. And they buried him in the city of David, among the kings, be cause he had done good in Israel, both towards God and towards his own house. The son died five years later. Equal if not greater sor row followed him to his rest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Since Stretch retained Byrd's shelf organization, I retain Stretch's organization. Though the purpose of this catalogue is to show what books Byrd owned, the nature of the surviving evidence makes it impossible to precisely describe the library's contents. The only titles that can be known definitely are those which survive with evidence of Byrd's ownership, those which were published in only one edition, or those which, based on Byrd's letters, diaries, and the Stretch and Zane catalogues, can be narrowed down to one possible edition. Consequently, the individual catalogue entries here have been organized to present information concerning all possible editions Byrd may have owned."--Preface.

First among these was the celebrated Cotton Mather, minister of Boston. He being in high repute for wisdom had recently preached much on the subject of witchcraft, teaching the people that witches were dangerous and ought to be put to death. He thus became the natural confederate of Parris and the chief author of the terrible scenes that ensued. Sir William Phipps, the royal governor, who had just arrived from England, was a member of Mather's church. Increase Mather, the father of Cotton, had nominated Phipps to his present office. Stoughton, the deputy governor, who was appointed judge and presided at the trials of the witches was the tool of Parris and the two Mathers. To these men, more especially to Parris and Ma ther, must be charged the full infamy of what followed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugh Amory (1930-2001) was at once the most rigorous and the most methodologically sophisticated historian of the book in early America. Gathered here are his essays, articles, and lectures on the subject, two of them printed for the first time. An introduction by David D. Hall sets this work in context and indicates its significance; Hall has also provided headnotes for each of the essays. Amory used his training as a bibliographer to reexamine every major question about printing, bookmaking, and reading in early New England. Who owned Bibles, and in what formats? Did the colonial book trade consist of books imported from Europe or of local production? Can we go behind the iconic status of the Bay Psalm Book to recover its actual history? Was Michael Wigglesworth's Day of Doom really a bestseller? And why did an Indian gravesite contain a scrap of Psalm 98 in a medicine bundle buried with a young Pequot girl? In answering these and other questions, Amory writes broadly about the social and economic history of printing, bookselling and book ownership. At the heart of his work is a determination to connect the materialities of printed books with the workings of the book trades and, in turn, with how printed books were put to use. This is a collection of great methodological importance for anyone interested in literature and history who wants to make those same connections.

Book excerpt: A piercing, unforgettable love story set in Greenwood, Oklahoma, also known as the “Black Wall Street,” and against the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Isaiah Wilson is, on the surface, a town troublemaker, but is hiding that he is an avid reader and secret poet, never leaving home without his journal. Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her family’s financial situation is in turmoil. Though they’ve attended the same schools, Isaiah never noticed Angel as anything but a dorky, Bible toting church girl. Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel can’t turn down the money and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon. But life changes on May 31, 1921 when a vicious white mob storms the Black community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the American Library of the Late Mr. George Brinley, of Hartford, Conn, Vol. 1: America in General, New France Canada Etc., The British Colonies to 1776, New England Some critical readers may object to the frequent recurrence of the terms scarce, rare, superlatively rare, and so on; and if such terms have been misapplied the objection is certainly a valid one. But it is believed that a thorough examination of the catalogue will show that reference to the rarity of a book or tract has been omitted when it might fairly have been made, ten times as often as it has been made without warrant of critical bibliography. Turn, for example, to the collection of Books printed in New England, 1640 - 1709 (pages 87 and to that of the Works of the Mathers (pp. 127 and of the six hundred and fifty consecutive titles there are scarcely twenty that any American bibliographer could hesitate to mark rare, or very rare. The general plan of the Catalogue is indicated, as regards the First Part, by the table of Contents, prefixed. The arrangement it can hardly be called a classification is substantially that which was adopted by Mr. Brinley himself, for his book-shelves. A strictly alphabetical arrangement, by authors' names or titles, would perhaps have been more acceptable to bibliographers, but the extent of the library rendered such an arrangement impracticable, and it seemed inappropriate to the sale-catalogue of a library which is not less remarkable for the completeness of its collections in special depart ments, than by the number of its titles.
