Book Synopsis A Radical's Books by : Michael Cyril William Hunter
Download or read book A Radical's Books written by Michael Cyril William Hunter and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The library owned by Samuel Jeake of Rye, nonconformist and local activist, was one of the most remarkable of its time. It is of particular importance in that relatively little information has hitherto been available about the ownership of books in the English provinces, or the reading habits of intellectuals who -- like Jeake --were outside London and university circles from which most surviving libraries have come down to us. The collection of some 1500 volumes includes an extraordinary assemblage of radical pamphlets from the English Revolution alongside works of theology, literature, scholarship and science. Other books reflect astrological and magical interests, and the collection also includes a medical library. Jeake's library catalogue, published here, gives much information about titles that are now lost, about the penetration of foreign books into provincial England, and about book prices. The introduction places Jeake's collection in context, and makes a significant contribution to the history of the book in the early modern period; appendices list surviving volumes from the library and give a complete list of the Jeake manuscripts now in Rye Museum.MICHAEL HUNTER is Professor of History at Birkbeck College, University of London; GILES MANDELBROTE is a Curator, British Collections 1501-1800, at the British Library; RICHARD OVENDEN is Deputy Head, Rare Books Division of the National Library of Scotland; NIGEL SMITH is Reader in English at the University of Oxford.

Book Synopsis The New England Mind by : Perry Miller
Download or read book The New England Mind written by Perry Miller and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Perry Miller once stated, "I have been compelled to insist that the mind of man is the basic factor in human history," and his study of the mind in America has shaped the thought of three decades of scholars. The fifteen essays here collected--several of them previously unpublished--address themselves to facets of the American consciousness and to their expression in literature from the time of the Cambridge Agreement to the Nobel Prize acceptance speeches of Hemingway and Faulkner. A companion volume to "Errand into the Wilderness," its general theme is one adumbrated in Mr. Miller's two-volume masterpiece, "The New England Mind"--the thrust of civilization into the vast, empty continent and its effect upon Americans' concept of themselves as "nature's nation." The essays first concentrate on Puritan covenant theology and its gradual adaptation to changing conditions in America: the decline in zeal for a "Bible commonwealth," the growth of trade and industy, and the necessity for coexisting with large masses of unchurched people. As the book progresses, the emphasis shifts from religion to the philosophy of nature to the development of an original literature, although Mr. Miller is usually analyzing simultaneously all three aspects of the American quest for self-identity. In the final essays, he shows how the forces that molded the self-conscious articulateness of the early New Englanders still operate in the work of contemporary American writers. The introduction to this collection is by Kenneth Murdock, Francis Lee Higginson Professor of English Literature, Emeritus, Harvard University, who, with Perry Miller and Samuel Eliot Morison, accomplished what has been called "one of the great historical re-evaluations of this generation."

Download or read book The Wilderness, the Nation, and the Electronic Era written by Elmer J. O'Brien and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wilderness, the Nation, and the Electronic Era: American Christianity and Religious Communication 1620-2000: An Annotated Bibliography contains over 2,400 annotations of books, book chapters, essays, periodical articles, and selected dissertations dealing with the various means and technologies of Christian communication used by clergy, churches, denominations, benevolent associations, printers, booksellers, publishing houses, and individuals and movements in their efforts to disseminate news, knowledge, and information about religious beliefs and life in the United States from colonial times to the present. Providing access to the critical and interpretive literature about religious communication is significant and plays a central role in the recent trend in American historiography toward cultural history, particularly as it relates to numerous collateral disciplines: sociology, anthropology, education, speech, music, literary studies, art history, and technology. The book documents communication shifts, from oral history to print to electronic and visual media, and their adaptive uses in communication networks developed over the nation's history. This reference brings bibliographic control to a large and diverse literature not previously identified or indexed.

Book Synopsis The Reformation of Common Learning by : Howard Hotson
Download or read book The Reformation of Common Learning written by Howard Hotson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-24 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramism was the most innovative and disruptive educational reform movement to sweep through the international Protestant world in the latter sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. During the 1620s, the Thirty Years' War destroyed the network of central European academies and universities which had generated most of this innovation. Students and teachers, fleeing the conflict in all directions, transplanted that tradition into many different geographical and cultural contexts in which it bore are wide variety of interrelated fruit. Within the Dutch Republic, post-Ramist method played a crucial role in the rapid assimilation of Cartesianism into a network of thriving young academies and universities. From England to east-central Europe, the tradition was no less important in accelerating the reception of Baconianism. In the easternmost outpost of the Reformed world in Transylvania, the displaced tradition generated a final flourishing of philosophical innovation which exercised a formative influence on the young Leibniz. The failure of all of these efforts to assemble the fruits of this tradition into an encyclopaedic synthesis marks a major watershed in Western intellectual history. The Reformation of Common Learning brings together all of these aspects of the tradition in a manner which roots them in deeper historical developments and relates a series of far-flung and poorly understood developments together in new ways.
Book Synopsis Rhetoric and Scripture by : Thomas H. Olbricht
Download or read book Rhetoric and Scripture written by Thomas H. Olbricht and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique overview of the development of rhetorical criticism both in North America and internationally through the work of pioneering New Testament scholar Thomas H. Olbricht. Lauri Thurén has gathered nineteen of Olbricht's essays as a guidebook to rhetorical criticism for students, clergy, and scholars. The range of essays from throughout Olbricht's career illuminate the history of rhetorical criticism and reflect the different motivations of ancient and contemporary rhetorical approaches. Essays focus on the history of biblical rhetorical analysis, the rhetorical analysis of biblical texts, the characteristics of rhetorical analysis, and types of biblical rhetorical criticism. A foreword by Thurén and a memorial essay by Carl R. Holladay contextualize Olbricht's work. Anyone interested in the rhetorical study of the New Testament will find this volume inspiring and informative.
