Book Synopsis William Wordsworth by : Stephen Gill
Download or read book William Wordsworth written by Stephen Gill and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second edition of William Wordsworth: A Life, Stephen Gill draws on knowledge of the poet's creative practices and his reputation and influence in his life-time and beyond. Refusing to treat the poet's later years as of little interest, this biography presents a narrative of the whole of Wordsworth's long life—1770 to 1850—tracing the development from the adventurous youth who alone of the great Romantic poets saw life in revolutionary France to the old man who became Queen Victoria's Poet Laureate. The various phases of Wordsworth's life are explored with a not uncritical sympathy; the narrative brings out the courage he and his wife and family were called upon to show as they crafted the life they wanted to lead. While the emphasis is on Wordsworth the writer, the personal relationships that nourished his creativity are fully treated, as are the historical circumstances that affected the production of his poetry. Wordsworth, it is widely believed, valued poetic spontaneity. He did, but he also took pains over every detail of the process of publication. The foundation of this second edition of the biography remains, as it was of the first, a conviction that Wordsworth's poetry, which has given pleasure and comfort to generations of readers in the past, will continue to do so in the years to come.
Book Synopsis Deep Distresses by : Richard E. Matlak
Download or read book Deep Distresses written by Richard E. Matlak and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep Distresses is a study of the intersecting family and professional vicissitudes that afflicted Wordsworth during the period of his greatest poetic productivity. The negative national publicity over his mariner brother's death at sea is the focus of the family tragedy; hostile reception to Poems in Two Volumes (1807) is the focus of professional duress. Both topics become related through the intercession of the poet's patron, Sir George Beaumont, who attempts to ameliorate the family tragedy with money and his painting of Pecl Castle in a Storm, while hoping to groom Wordsworth for a place among the cultural elite of London. In its attention to nineteenth-century culture and business, this study offers an entirely new context for reading and re-interpreting many of Wordsworth's major works from Michael through the major lyrics of Poems in Two Volumes and the latter books of The Prelude. Richard E. Matlak is a Professor of English and Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies at the College of the Holy Cross.

Book Synopsis Dorothy Wordsworth and Romanticism, rev. ed. by : Susan M. Levin
Download or read book Dorothy Wordsworth and Romanticism, rev. ed. written by Susan M. Levin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like her more famous brother William, Dorothy Wordsworth was also an important writer. Yet her work has found a wide readership only in recent years. Appearing in 1987, the first edition of this book was the first full-length scholarly study of the author and was also the first to collect her poems, discovered at Dove cottage and in other libraries. This new edition adds critical readings based on the latest research into Wordsworth's life and work and will further the argument for her place among the important writers of Romanticism.

Book Synopsis Experimentalism in Wordsworth's Later Poetry by : Tim Fulford
Download or read book Experimentalism in Wordsworth's Later Poetry written by Tim Fulford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Experimentalism in Wordsworth's Later Poetry Tim Fulford provides detailed readings of a range of little-known, late and difficult poems which together present an alternative Wordsworth to the one we are used to. This newly-revealed Wordsworth continued experimenting with form, genre and style as his career progressed so as to ponder the challenging experiences presented by later life. Fulford invites the reader to engage, through Wordsworth's poetry, with such broadly-felt concerns as quarantine, isolation, mental illness and bereavement. Focused yet broad in chronological scope, this study also considers the literature of Wordsworth's old age in relation to his earlier work. Tim Fulford is the author of many books and articles on the literature and history of the Romantic Period (1780-1840), and is the editor of The New Cambridge Companion to Coleridge (2022). His monograph Wordsworth's Poetry 1815-45 (2019) won the Robert Penn Warren/Cleanth Brooks Award for Literary Scholarship 2020. His edition The Collected Letters of Sir Humphry Davy (co-edited with Sharon Ruston) (2020) won an honourable mention in the MLA biennial Morton N. Cohen Award For A Distinguished Edition Of Letters"--
