Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of a Post-Impressionist: Being the Familiar Correspondence of Vincent Van Gogh Though the collection of lettedr contained in Cassirer's publication, "Vincent Van Gogh. Briefe," is not a complete one, from my knowledge of a very large number of the letters which are not included in this volume, I feel able to say that the present selection is in any case very representative and contains all that is essential in respect to Van Gogh's art-credo and general attitude of mind. For reasons into which it is unnecessary for me to enter here, it was found convenient to adopt the form of Cassirer's publication arranged by Margarete Mauthner, and my translation has therefore been made from the German (Fourth Edition, 1911). Still, with the view of avoiding the errors which were bound to creep into a double translation of this sort, I took care, when my version was complete, to compare it with as many of the original French letters as I was able to find, and I am glad to say that by this means I succeeded in satisfying myself as to the accuracy of every line from page 39 to the end. The letters printed up to page 38, some of which I fancy must have been written in Dutch - a language which in any case I could not have read - have not been compared with the originals. Book excerpt: It is so good, after so many years of public indifference, even hostility towards Vincent and his work, to feel towards the end of my life that the battle is won.' JO VAN GOGH-BONGER TO GUSTAVE COQUIOT, 1922 'It is a sacrifice for the sake of Vincent's glory.' JO VAN GOGH-BONGER ON THE SALE OF 'THE SUNFLOWERS' TO THE NATIONAL GALLERY, UK, 1924 Little known but no less influential, Jo van Gogh-Bonger was sister-in-law of Vincent van Gogh, wife of his brother, Theo. When the brothers died soon after each other, she took charge of Van Gogh's artistic legacy and devoted the rest of her life to disseminating his work. Despite being widowed with a young son, Jo successfully navigated the male-dominated world of the art market-publishing Van Gogh's letters, organizing exhibitions in the Netherlands and throughout the world, and making strategic sales to private individuals and influential dealers-ultimately establishing Van Gogh's reputation as one of the finest artists of his generation. In doing so, she fundamentally changed how we view the relationship between the artist and his work. She also lived a rich and fascinating life-not only was she friends with eminent writers and artists, but she also was active within the Social Democratic Labour Party and closely involved in emerging women's movements. Using rich source material, including unseen diaries, documents and letters, Hans Luijten charts the multi-faceted life of this visionary woman with the drive to shake the art world to its core.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1988, Post-impressionists in England documents the response of English taste to modern French art from the first Post-Impressionist Exhibition in 1910 to the outbreak of the First World War. The notion of ‘Post-Impressionism’, unlike its earlier counterpart, Impressionism, was an exclusively English contribution to art history. Originally used to denote the work of Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse and the Fauve painters, it rapidly assimilated Futurism, Cubism and recent English work like Vorticism. By focusing on one aspect of an important and complex period in British cultural history, J.B. Bullen illuminates not only aesthetic questions but also the way in which those aesthetic issues were determined and conditioned by social and political concerns. Changes in English attitudes to art in this period were so rapid and were modified with such speed that the author has taken a strictly chronological approach to the subject. He sets out clearly the month-by-month developments in English attitudes and traces in detail the debates about modernism in England. To make matters clearer the book is divided into three major parts, each complementary to the others. The introduction surveys the period as a whole and places attitudes to art in the general context of the culture of the time. In the second part the extracts provide selected, concrete and particular examples of the huge range of material upon which the findings of the introduction are based; the writers represented include Roger Fry, Bernard Berenson, Desmond McCarthy, John singer Sargent, Walter Sickert, Clive Bell, Virginia Woolf and Wyndham Lewis. In the third part a chronology sets out in tabular form month-by-month events- exhibitions and major publications- as they occurred in Britain and in France. This is a must read for scholars and researchers of British cultural history and art history.

Book excerpt: D. H. Lawrence, asserts Jack Stewart, expresses a painter's vision in words, supplementing visual images with verbal rhythms. With the help of twenty-three illustrations, Stewart shows how Lawrence's style relates to impressionism, expressionism, primitivism, and futurism. Stewart examines Lawrence's painterly vision in The White Peacock, Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, Kangaroo, and The Plumed Serpent. Stewart's final three chapters deal with the influence exerted on Lawrence's fiction by the work of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin, and the Japanese artists Hokusai and Hiroshige. He concludes by synthesizing the themes that pervade this interarts study: vision and expression, art and ontology.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-awaited edition brings together for the first time 366 letters, cards and telegrams exchanged between Craig and his patron the cosmopolitan Count Kessler. An important primary source, illuminated by Dr Newman's commentary, it focuses on three areas of particular importance: - 1. Craig's artistic ideas and the spread of his influence through exhibitions and books; proposals are developed for work with Otto Brahm, Eleonora Duse, Max Reinhardt, Henry van de Velde, Eduard Verkade, Leopold Jessner, Dyaghilev, Beerbohm Tree, C. B. Cochran, and others. 2. Kessler's Cranach Press Hamlet with wood-engraved illustrations by Craig; this is a landmark in the history of twentieth-century book design and printing whose genesis is now fully revealed in these letters and amplified with reproductions of eighteen trial page proofs. 3. The relationship between an artist and his patron. Exceptionally detailed indexes are an additional feature of this book
