Book excerpt: Synopsis for "The Legend of The Witch of Woolpit" The Legend of The Witch of Woolpit transports readers to the quaint village of Woolpit, steeped in history and folklore. Set against the backdrop of rural England, the story unfolds with the arrival of a mysterious woman whose presence disrupts the everyday life of the villagers. In Episode 1: The Origins of Woolpit, we are introduced to the enigmatic village, its rich customs, and the close-knit community. The tranquility is shattered with the arrival of a stranger, prompting a mix of curiosity and suspicion among the villagers. As the story progresses into Episode 2: The Woman Accused, whispers of witchcraft begin to circulate. Growing unrest leads to the formal accusation of the woman, culminating in a dramatic trial filled with fear, prejudice, and societal tensions. The villagers grapple with their beliefs, and the verdict unleashes dire consequences. Episode 3: The Curse Unleashed delves into the aftermath of the trial. In her final moments, the woman utters a curse that reverberates through the village, manifesting in crop failures and livestock deaths. The once-thriving community is plunged into misfortune, and the villagers face the harrowing realization that their actions may have consequences beyond their understanding. In Episode 4: The Haunting, Woolpit becomes a shadow of its former self as haunting occurrences plague the villagers. Struggling to cope with the supernatural manifestations, they seek redemption and attempt to lift the curse, inviting experts in folklore to help them navigate the mysteries of the unknown. The legend evolves in Episode 5: The Legacy, as the story of the witch transforms into a local myth, preserved and retold through generations. The impact of the legend on modern-day Woolpit invites reflections on the lessons learned from the past and the enduring influence of the woman’s story. The narrative concludes in Episode 6: Epilogue, exploring the lingering presence of the witch’s spirit and the ongoing mystery surrounding her tale. Through investigations into historical accuracy and folklore, readers are invited to ponder the intersection of myth and reality, and the legacy left behind by the witch of Woolpit. This poignant tale captures the complexities of human nature, the consequences of fear and prejudice, and the lasting power of storytelling in shaping culture and community.

Book excerpt: Elves and elf-belief during the Anglo-Saxon period are reassessed in this lively and provocative study. Anglo-Saxon elves [Old English ælfe] are one of the best attested non-Christian beliefs in early medieval Europe, but current interpretations of the evidence derive directly from outdated nineteenth- and early twentieth-century scholarship. Integrating linguistic and textual approaches into an anthropologically-inspired framework, this book reassesses the full range of evidence. It traces continuities and changes in medieval non-Christian beliefs with a new degree of reliability, from pre-conversion times to the eleventh century and beyond, and uses comparative material from medieval Ireland and Scandinavia to argue for a dynamic relationship between beliefs and society. Inparticular, it interprets the cultural significance of elves as a cause of illness in medical texts, and provides new insights into the much-discussed Scandinavian magic of seidr. Elf-beliefs, moreover, were connected withAnglo-Saxon constructions of sex and gender; their changing nature provides a rare insight into a fascinating area of early medieval European culture. Shortlisted for the Katharine Briggs Folklore Award 2007 ALARIC HALL is a fellow of the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies.
