Book excerpt: The years following the American Civil War were particularly unjust to those who called the South home. Most families had suffered tremendous loss to the horrors of a war they didn't fully understand. Many Southern homesteads could not protect themselves from the horde of profiteers sweeping South at war's end, good and bad alike, all hoping to reap the spoils of a defeated South. Some by legal means, sure, but many others by any means it took. Buach Whelan (Boo-ock Whay-lan) is a big, strong lad of Irish descent who was raised by the Cherokee elders to become the white warrior Lone Eagle. He was too young to fight in the legal war but was near grown when the postwar Reconstruction hit his part of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Bein' one who honors duty, he is forced into the fight when his own home is taken, his family murdered. His struggle becomes a personal war he vows to see to the end. Such becomes the way for Buach Whelan. Such becomes a life lived by the legend of Swell Branch.

Download or read book Snowy Tower written by Martin Shaw and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Snowy Tower, Dr. Martin Shaw continues his trilogy of works on the relationship between myth, wilderness, and a culture of wildness. In this second book, he gives a telling of the Grail epic Parzival. Claiming it as a great trickster story of medieval Europe, he offers a deft and erudite commentary, with topics ranging from climate change and the soul to the discipline of erotic consciousness, from the hallucination of empire to a revisioning of the dark speech of the ancient bards. Ingrained in the very syntax of Snowy Tower is an invocation of what Shaw calls 'wild mythologies' -- stories that are more than just human allegory, that seem to brush the winged thinking of owl, stream, and open moor. This daring work offers a connection to the genius of the margins; that the big questions of today will not be solved by big answers, but by the myriad of associations that both myth and wilderness offer.

Someone wants the book back--and is willing to kill to get it. The only trouble is, Abbie no longer has the book. It's locked away in the customs house in Dover. Now it's a race against time as Abbie stays one step ahead of her pursuers. The last person she wants to confide in is her best friend, Hugh Templar, whom she knows only as a formidable scholar who shares her passion for Roman antiquities. But as Hugh keeps turning up where she least expects him, a few things begin to dawn on her....Not only is Hugh surprisingly--in fact incredibly--handsome without his glasses on, but he's strangely "professional" in how he handles her mysterious enemies. Hugh is clearly not what he seems. And soon Abbie realizes that neither is she...as she discovers what it means to love with all her heart and soul.

Book excerpt: Sophie Lincoln recently lost her husband, Carl, to a long-term illness, and her children have encouraged her to move to a small house. As she goes through boxes of papers and photos in the attic, she runs across a box containing a ring woven of twine, and a chain. These were a gift to her in her youth by a special boy named Donnie. Sophie's memories lead her back to her writing to tell a story of adventure with Sophie Writes a Love Story. She begins with excerpts from old journals she kept as a child with references to Donnie and the hideout in the timber, and she weaves the magic of story-telling into the entries she finds. Don Ribold is retired and alone and has become depressed with life in general. A friend convinces him to take up a hobby of painting, long forgotten, and makes an introduction to an art teacher who helps him get back into his work. Sophie and Don's independence and individual pursuits of the arts will lead them to each other, and to a chance for love the second time around.
