Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billy Ramsey knew there was something very different about him from an early age. He was destined to be the greatest football player ever. Maybe the best athlete ever. Would this special gift be more of a burden than a blessing? When he moved with his family to Springtown to play football, the troubles started. Banned from playing his eighth grade season because he was too rough, he caught the attention of one of the best sports writers in the state. Young Jenny McBride loved him more than life itself and stood by his side as he went from a small town kid to the best known sports figure in the northeastern part of the nation. The legendary Greybull would re-define the game of football and burn his name onto the top of the record books. He was The Greybull, and there will never be another.

Book excerpt: "Black Cotton II" picks up where "Black Cotton" left off. Petey is at it again and continues to get into more trouble than he can get out of. From pilfering watermellons as a kid, to breaking wild horses, Petey learns some valuable lessons along the way. The colorful characters of a slower time in our history come to life in the stories contained in "Black Cotton II." Growing up in the 1950s and 1960s in rural Oklahoma was a whole lot different than kids experience today. Petey lives it to the fullest in the pages of "Black Cotton II."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in the famous American Guide Series of the Work Projects Administration in 1941, Wyoming: A Guide remains a distinguished survey of the state, its centers of interest, and its history. Now issued in paperback for the first time, it can introduce to new readers the geographic spectacle and pioneer history that continue to shape the character of Wyoming. A new introduction by T. A. Larson, author of History of Wyoming, updates the Guide and evaluates changes seen in the state since the book was first published. Valuable to the resident as a reference to the state's many treasures, and useful to the tourist who wants to know more than the road signs tell, Wyoming: A Guide commemorates those who passed through to the West and those who stayed to forge a state in the heart of the frontier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forget Doris Day singing on the stagecoach. Forget Robin Weigert’s gritty portrayal on HBO’s Deadwood. The real Calamity Jane was someone the likes of whom you’ve never encountered. That is, until now. This book is a definitive biography of Martha Canary, the woman popularly known as Calamity Jane. Written by one of today’s foremost authorities on this notorious character, it is a meticulously researched account of how an alcoholic prostitute was transformed into a Wild West heroine. Always on the move across the northern plains, Martha was more camp follower than the scout of legend. A mother of two, she often found employment as waitress, laundress, or dance hall girl and was more likely to be wearing a dress than buckskin. But she was hard to ignore when she’d had a few drinks, and she exploited the aura of fame that dime novels created around her, even selling her autobiography and photos to tourists. Gun toting, swearing, hard drinking—Calamity Jane was all of these, to be sure. But whatever her flaws or foibles, James D. McLaird paints a compelling portrait of an unconventional woman who more than once turned the tables on those who sought to condemn or patronize her. He also includes dozens of photos—many never before seen—depicting Jane in her many guises. His book is a long-awaited biography of Martha Canary and the last word on Calamity Jane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published more than a century ago, The Biography of a Grizzly recounts the life of a fictitious bear named Wahb who lived and died in the Greater Yellowstone region. This new edition combines Ernest Thompson Seton’s classic tale and original illustrations with historical and scientific context for Wahb’s story, providing a thorough understanding of the setting, cultural connections, biology, and ecology of Seton’s best-known book. By the time The Biography of a Grizzly was published in 1900, grizzly bears had been hunted out of much of their historical range in North America. The characterization of Wahb, along with Seton’s other anthropomorphic tales of American wildlife, helped to change public perceptions and promote conservation. As editors Jeremy M. Johnston and Charles R. Preston remind us, however, Seton’s approach to writing about animals put him at the center of the “Nature-Faker” controversy of the early twentieth century, when John Burroughs and Theodore Roosevelt, among others, denounced sentimental representations of wildlife. The editors address conservation scientists’ continuing concerns about inaccurate depictions of nature in popular culture. Despite its anthropomorphism, Seton’s paradoxical book imparts a good deal of insightful and accurate natural history, even as its exaggerations shaped early-twentieth-century public opinion on conservation in often counterproductive ways. By complicating Seton’s enthralling tale with scientific observations of grizzly behavior in the wild, Johnston and Preston evaluate the story’s accuracy and bring the story of Yellowstone grizzlies into the present day. Preserving the 1900 edition’s original design and illustrations, Wahb brings new understanding to an American classic, updating the book for current and future generations.
