Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of Thomas Carey, who went from Somerset to Somerset. That journey from Somerset, England, to Somerset County, Maryland, in the mid-1600s would set into motion events that would determine the fate of several future generations. Based on painstaking research, this account chronicles the progress of each generation and highlights the nomadic nature of the family. It leads readers through his descendants’ early life in Maryland, down through Virginia, and into Orange County, North Carolina. The next stop appears to be area around New Bern, North Carolina. The 1830s brought about dense living conditions in North Carolina. The family partnered with other settlers and moved west via wagon train, crossing the Great Smokey Mountains and traveling a primitive route that subsequently became U.S. Highway 70. Along the way, some settled in hamlets and scarcely populated communities in East and Middle Tennessee. Most continued to press onward, seeking inexpensive farmland, abundant fresh water, and the opportunity to live the American Dream.

Book excerpt: UFOs: What Is the Government Really Covering Up? is not just another book about the 1947 Roswell crash. Ingeniously, Roberts takes a step back and o ers an in-depth survey of the UFO phenomenon as a whole. Using familiar case studies of alien encounters as examples, he casts a wide net that shows a clear pattern of extraterrestrial visitation and the ensuing cover-up by US and world governments. In the end, the reader cannot help coming away with the same conclusionthat something is going on and our government knows it. A must-read for those interested in ufology, conspiracy theories, and ancient aliens. Rita Louise, PhD, author of ET Chronicles: What Myth and Legend Say about Human Origin While a seemingly unexplained event in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947 exposed the American people to the phenomenon of unidentied flying objectsor UFOsthese mysterious sightings have a history that reaches far back into our collective past. Ancient megalithic structures, biblical stories, and even prehistoric art and cave paintings point to the existence of nonterrestrial lifeand with advanced technology, new recordings, and the Internet, more evidence points to their continued presence today. Why, then, do we the public know so little? Why has the media ignored credible reports from eyewitnesses and ufologists? And why have world governments suppressed these facts from their citizens? The UFO enigma is an extremely complex jigsaw puzzle comprised of many pieces. However, they t together in a way that presents a cohesive theory when you connect all the dots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was an industrialist. An economist. A medical humanitarian. A media pioneer. An educator. A moral reformer. A botanist. And a Christian missionary. And he did more for the transformation of the Indian subcontinent in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries than any other individual before or since. Many know of William Carey. Some know about the specifics of his work and ministry. But few understand the profound contemporary significance of his life. Few realize how much we owe the increasing globalization of Christianity to the silent revolution he initiated. Fewer still are aware of his legacy of sensitivity to the variety of issues confronting true gospel witness in any culture. This biography about the central character in the story of India's modernization and transformation will help you understand Carey's impact. But The Legacy of William Carey is more than a biography. It is a charge to all Christians to respond in kind within our own cultures, and to use Carey's example as our model for taking the light of the Gospel into every corner of society. If we follow in his footsteps, not only will lives be bettered this side of heaven, but hearts will be changed for eternity--and entire cultures transformed for Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, women have often worked in informal ways and in modest conditions, frequently without monuments or grand examples of architecture preserved to commemorate their accomplishments. Landmarks of American Women's History describes the sites that represent a wide variety of women's experiences and accomplishments. As early as the fourteenth century, the women of New Mexico's Taos Pueblo lived equal lives of responsibility with men, even building most of the pueblo. Mary Chase Perry Stratton's Pewabic Pottery in Detroit, Michigan exemplifies women's contributions to the arts. Bryn Mawr College's M. Cary Thomas Library is tangible evidence of Thomas's drive to secure equal educational opportunities for women. The boardinghouse at Boot Cotton Mill in Lowell, Massachusetts provides a glimpse into the daily life of women in the industrial workforce. New York City's United Charities Building was- and still is- the headquarters of numerous reform organizations, many headed by women. In vivid sketches of eleven historic sites from across the country- in addition to numerous related location that act as supporting characters- Page Putnam Miller tells an engaging story of the accomplishments and the lasting influence of women on American history.

Only a select few have ever had access to the truth about what became known as Area 51. But what happened to the remnants of that crash is shrouded in even greater mystery. What began in the high desert of New Mexico ended at Wright-Patterson, an ultra top-secret Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio. The physical evidence of extraterrestrial visitation was buried deep within this nuclear stronghold. How tragic that such seismic news should be kept from the people of the world...pieces of history, now quickly dwindling into oblivion as the last of the secret-keepers passes on. In spite of its rich history of military service to our nation, Wright-Patterson also stands as the secret tomb of one of the greatest occurrences in recorded history. But be prepared...the real Area 51--Wright-Patterson's vault--is about to be opened.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Educational Legacy of Woodrow Wilson, James Axtell brings together essays by eight leading historians and one historically minded political scientist to examine the long, formative academic phase of Wilson's career and its connection to his relatively brief tenure in politics. Together, the essays provide a greatly revised picture of Wilson's whole career and a deeply nuanced understanding of the evolution of his educational, political, and social philosophy and policies, the ordering of his values and priorities, and the seamless link between his academic and political lives. The contributors shed light on Wilson's unexpected rise to the governorship of New Jersey and the presidency, and how he prepared for elective office through his long study of government and the practice of academic politics, which he deemed no less fierce than that of Washington. In both spheres he was enormously successful, propelling a string of progressive reforms through faculty and legislative forums. Only after he was beset by health problems and events beyond his control did he fail to push his academic and postwar agendas to their logical, idealistic conclusions. Contributors James Axtell, College of William and Mary * Victoria Bissell Brown, Grinnell College * John Milton Cooper Jr., University of Wisconsin * Stanley N. Katz, Princeton University * W. Bruce Leslie, SUNY-Brockport * Adam R. Nelson, University of Wisconsin * Mark R. Nemec, Forrester Research * John R. Thelin, University of Kentucky * Trygve Throntveit, Harvard University

Recording family life was an important ritual in Victorian households, and out of this habit grew a new literary genre, the domestic biography, extolling individual piety and domestic virtue. Using documents from the archives of the Macaulay, Stephen, Wilberforce, and Thornton families, Dr Tolley analyzes the biographical tradition and its lasting effects upon "family values."

Book excerpt: In this unusual and original study, Marcia Pointon examines the cultural effects and consequences of the participation by women in acts of representation in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. She explores their lives and work, and a cultural environment in which images of female saints and goddesses established indices of femininity in the homes of wealthy men. Did the women portrayed also possess artifacts, and did they use the power of gifts and bequests to determine social relations? Did they themselves participate in the processes of creating images of the seen world? Pointon sets out to answer some of these questions through a series of novel and vividly recounted case studies of women such as Emma Hamilton (wife and mistress), Mary Moser, the artist, and Dorothy Richardson, the antiquarian.
