Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated anthology features the celebrated poet’s complete works for children—with an introduction by his wife, Paula Sandburg. As a young father of two daughters, Carl Sandburg noticed that children’s literature was still stuck in the traditions of European folklore, centered on princes, princesses and peasants. He wanted to create stories that spoke more directly to American children and their way of life. His first book for children, Rootabaga Stories, explore farms, trains and other typical locales as the clever characters discover the magic of the Midwest. This volume includes all five of Carl Sandburg’s books for young readers: Rootabaga Stories, Early Moon, Wind Song, Prairie-Town Boy, and Abe Lincoln Grows Up.

Download or read book Haircut written by Ring Lardner and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-04-03 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Ring Lardner was originally published in 1925 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. 'Haircut' is a dark satire about moral blindness. Ring Lardner was born in Niles, Michigan in 1885. He studied engineering at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, but did not complete his first semester. In 1907, Lardner obtained his first job as journalist with the South Bend Times. Six years later, he published his first successful book, You Know Me Al, an epistolary novel written in the form of letters by 'Jack Keefe', a bush-league baseball player, to a friend back home. A huge hit, the book earned the appreciation of Virginia Woolf and others. Lardner went on to write such well-known short stories as 'Haircut', 'Some Like Them Cold', 'The Golden Honeymoon', 'Alibi Ike', and 'A Day with Conrad Green'.

Download or read book Harrow written by Joy Williams and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her first novel since the Pulitzer Prize–nominated The Quick and the Dead, the legendary writer takes us into an uncertain landscape after an environmental apocalypse, a world in which only the man-made has value, but some still wish to salvage the authentic. "She practices ... camouflage, except that instead of adapting to its environment, Williams’s imagination, by remaining true to itself, reveals new colorations in the ecology around her.” —A.O. Scott, The New York Times Book Review Khristen is a teenager who, her mother believes, was marked by greatness as a baby when she died for a moment and then came back to life. After Khristen’s failing boarding school for gifted teens closes its doors, and she finds that her mother has disappeared, she ranges across the dead landscape and washes up at a “resort” on the shores of a mysterious, putrid lake the elderly residents there call “Big Girl.” In a rotting honeycomb of rooms, these old ones plot actions to punish corporations and people they consider culpable in the destruction of the final scraps of nature’s beauty. What will Khristen and Jeffrey, the precocious ten-year-old boy she meets there, learn from this “gabby seditious lot, in the worst of health but with kamikaze hearts, an army of the aged and ill, determined to refresh, through crackpot violence, a plundered earth”? Rivetingly strange and beautiful, and delivered with Williams’s searing, deadpan wit, Harrow is their intertwined tale of paradise lost and of their reasons—against all reasonableness—to try and recover something of it.
