Book excerpt: In "The Leader’s 2nd Training," Mindell introduces tested 2nd Training Inner Work, Bodywork, Relationship, and Large Group methods for personal, group, and world conflicts. Two key ideas are that everyone is needed as a 2nd Training leader to facilitate conflicts worldwide, and that 2nd Trainings are based on a Big TOE (Big Theory Of Everything). 1st Trainings in Leadership should include, at the minimum, diversity awareness, group process skills, business leadership concepts, and conflict methods. Such cognitive trainings, while very much needed, are not enough to help our planet’s worst social and environmental problems. Therefore, this book introduces 2nd Training methods to enable all 1st Trainings to work better. 2nd Trainings help people to become effective leaders by increasing their awareness and ability to FLOW—and be creative and powerful during conflict! 2nd Trainings reduce tension, and thus create solutions and friendships. Thanks to physicist Stephen Hawking and others, the TOE intends to unify the immense spaces of Relativity and tiny spaces of the Quantum world. Mindell now suggests a Big TOE, which includes not only Physics, but also Psychology, Spiritual experience, and Social awareness. Mindell’s 2nd Training methods have been widely tested around the world, with thousands of people and dozens of organizations, including the U.N. and government leaders.

Book excerpt: Leadership is so much a part of the conduct of training that at times it is difficult to tell where one stops and the other starts. . . . “The best book on military training from platoon to division level that has been published in any army.”—Army magazine “His message is that whatever works and gets results by the most direct and efficient means is good. All else should be eliminated.”—Air University Review “A utilitarian book that talks intelligently of leadership, management and common sense.”—ARMOR magazine “A hardhitting and unvarnished . . . authoritative work that should be read and reread by everyone who aspires to be a truly professional soldier.”—General Bruce Palmer, U.S. Army (Ret.) “A gem, with few peers, invaluable . . . [Arthur Collins'] advice is always performance oriented. Don't talk so much about it, he says, Don't make so many fancy charts about training. Instead, do it. Teach it. Perform it.”—Parameters

Book excerpt: There has been a resurgence of interest in training programmes for higher education leaders and management (HELM) at African universities in recent times. Although there have been a few cases of evaluation studies of such programmes in Africa, a more systematic review of the lessons learnt through these programmes has not been done. This book aims to document and reflect on the learnings from intervention programmes at three African higher education councils. It is clear that university leaders face many leadership and management challenges. This is the starting point of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report documents the BOLC II cadre Instructor Certification Program (ICP) and the single-site initial implementation conducted during FY 05. BOLC entails a three phase process of officer initial entry training. After Phase I (precommissioning), all lieutenants receive a common core program (Phase II) focusing on leadership, counseling, and fieldcraft in a hands-on, field intensive environment. Phase III focuses on branch-specific officer training. Training observations from the ICP indicated that a disproportionate amount of time was spent on individual skill training versus training the cadre on how to teach, coach, and mentor lieutenants. Critical soft skills training was either abbreviated or not conducted. The training focus of the single-site implementation mirrored that of the ICP. The lieutenants' survey ratings showed significant improvements in how prepared they felt they were to lead a platoon in executing the Warrior battle drills and their confidence in executing the Warrior tasks following BOLC II. However, important gaps in leadership training were identified. Survey results showed that the BOLC training did not meet the lieutenants' expectations of the course. Recommendations based, in part, on these findings, have resulted in noticeable changes in the next ICP and the two-site initial implementation. ARI will continue to monitor these changes and their effects on both cadre preparation and the quality of leadership training received by lieutenants during BOLC II."--Stinet.
