Book excerpt: Until well into the 19th century most English people resided in the countryside and so studying the experiences of the people who made up rural society is an important task for the local historian and one that is of wide interest since what are now urban areas were often villages. This book offers an examination of the records available to the local historian for researching village society and the changing fortunes of its members. Other areas that touch people's everyday lives are also considered - educational, recreational and religious arrangements and the provision of law and order.
Book Synopsis Immigrant England, 1300–1550 by : W. Mark Ormrod
Download or read book Immigrant England, 1300–1550 written by W. Mark Ormrod and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a vivid and accessible history of first-generation immigrants to England in the later Middle Ages. Accounting for upwards of two percent of the population and coming from all parts of Europe and beyond, immigrants spread out over the kingdom, settling in the countryside as well as in towns, taking work as agricultural labourers, skilled craftspeople and professionals. Often encouraged and welcomed, sometimes vilified and victimised, immigrants were always on the social and political agenda. Immigrant England is the first book to address a phenomenon and issue of vital concern to English people at the time, to their descendants living in the United Kingdom today and to all those interested in the historical dimensions of immigration policy, attitudes to ethnicity and race and concepts of Englishness and Britishness.

Download or read book Leper Knights written by David Marcombe and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2003 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most unusual contributions to the crusading era was the idea of the leper knight - a response to the scourge of leprosy and the shortage of fighting men which beset the Latin kingdom in the twelfth century. The Order of St Lazarus, which saw the idea become a reality, founded establishments across Western Europe to provide essential support for its hospitaller and military vocations. This book explores the important contribution of the English branch of the order, which by 1300 managed a considerable estate from its chief preceptory at Burton Lazars in Leicestershire. Time proved the English Lazarites to be both tough and tenacious, if not always preoccupied with the care of lepers. Following the fall of Acre in 1291 they endured a period of bitter internal conflict, only to emerge reformed and reinvigorated in the fifteenth century. Though these late medieval knights were very different from their twelfth-century predecessors, some ideologies lingered on, though subtly readapted to the requirements of a new age, until the order was finally suppressed by Henry VIII in 1544. The modern refoundation of the order, a charitable institution, dates from 1962. The book uses both documentary and archaeological evidence to provide the first ever account of this little-understood crusading order.DAVID MARCOMBE is Director of the Centre for Local History, University of Nottingham.
