Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: May 9, 1912 The customs, riches, pleasures, and other allurements of the world also keep many in a state of thraldom. So far as they are not abused, these things should not be condemned, for they have their place in God's scheme of life for His children here upon earth; but when they are weighed, as is too frequently the case, against the love of God and obedience to His will and laws, and against all self-denying righteousness, and then deliberately chosen in preference, they become very serious snares and pitfalls to men, and keep them in a condition of true slavery, for no one in such a condition as this can be said to be free. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: December, 1931 But that was not the order. The Saviour evidently knew that His time had come, when He was to be delivered into the hands of His enemies, when He was to be scourged and spat upon, when He was to pass through a mock trial, and finally endure death upon the cross. He came to do the will of His Father, and He knew that that was His Father's will. When in the garden of Gethsemane, carrying the weight of the sins of the whole world, and His anguish of soul was such that He sweat great drops of blood, His prayer was Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: January 18, 1912 Brother Taylor has given me some credit here, in his remarks, that I do not claim to merit, referring to a condition of which I cannot of myself boast; for I am under the necessity of acknow ledging, and I do most cheerfully acknowledge, that I owe my success so far in family life largely to those whom God has favored me with to help me care for and rear and train my children. For years together, I have been away from home on missions, leaving my little ones with their mothers; and yet, during all my absence from home, I have felt the assurance in my soul that my boys and girls were under the care, protection and guidance of faithful, true Latter-day Saints. Whatever credit may attach to me, is due largely to those whom God has given me to be my helpmates in life. I want to acknowledge it before the world, because it is true. I do not mean to say, by this, that we are without blemish, that we are perfect, that we know it all, and that we, ourselves, know just what to do and how to do it, in order to accomplish the results that we desire; but I mean to say this, that in the home where there is union, where there is love, where there is faith in God, where the father and the mother, when together, and the children are united in prayer and in sup plication to God - that there is a providence over that home that will shape the course of those that are entrusted with the training and care of that home, that will be most pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God. We must, therefore, give not only credit to our wives for their faithfulness and love of the truth, for the important part they act, for the good work they do in the sacred duty of rearing the family, and their union with their husbands in the family discipline; but we must acknowledge, where this spirit and union prevails in the hearts of the family, that the hand of God is there, and the providence of the Lord is over them and their home, and blessings will come and the right spirit and feeling will be inspired within the hearts of our children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: November 28, 1912 Upon it let the clouds distil virtue and richness and let the fields smile with plenty. Let the flocks and herds greatly multiply upon the mountains and hills. Let thy great kindness conquer and sub due the unbelief of Thy people, incline them to gather in upon this land according to Thy word. Let the large Ships of nations bring them from the distant isles, etc. Oh, the meaning of that prayer and the humility of the Divinely called man who uttered it! That prayer is recorded in heaven, as well as upon earth, as shown by its fulfillment before the eyes of all nations. That prayer answers every question that can arise concerning the gathering of Judah in this day. It stands as another witness to all the world of the truth of the restored gos pel of Jesus Christ and the Divine commission that rests upon the leaders of God's Church, to which the world in derision gives the name of Mormonism. Despite present unpopularity and persecution, the world will some day come to realize that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been God's instrument for the fulfillment of His purposes in these latter days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: May 8, 1913 First: That such a condition of general apostasy was foreseen by the apostle and prophets as recorded by their writings in the Bible. Second: That the churches of to-day do not measure up to the description of Christ's church given in holy writ, and as described by the early Christian fathers. Third: That all the different contending Christian creeds cannot be right, else Christ becomes the author of confusion, and as He says, A house divided against itself cannot stand, so all the different and conflicting creeds cannot expect to stand. Fourth: That it was predicted that God would restore His gospel and that, too, after the time John, the Beloved, was on the Isle of Patmos. Fifth That the claims of Joseph Smith are not out of keeping with scripture, and that the church so often ascribed to his founding bears the marks of the original institution, together with all the gifts and blessings that were enjoyed by former-day saints. Sixth: That the teachings of the Church to-day are both scrip tural and reasonable. Seventh: That a vast deal of external evidence has come to light since the death of the prophet to prove his claims concerning the work which was established through him. They are the really useful who, with humble, reverent heart, Unseen by earth's admirers, seek to do their secret part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: June 13, 1912 In considering these objections, the really earnest inquirer is asked to approach the subject with as little prejudice as possible, not seeking to impress his mind upon the Scriptures, but allowing the revelations of God to impress themselves upon him. He should bear in mind that from wishing a thing to be untrue, it is but a short step to believing it to be so, thus permitting the will to bribe the understanding, as is the case with those who consult the Scriptures not to gain knowledge, but to be confirmed in a fore gone conclusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: September 5, 1912 In conclusion, President Clawson said he was anxious to hear from each of the presidents. He hoped they would feel perfectly free and report conditions as they existed in their conferences. In this way they would get a great amount of information. This work means the salvation of souls, and is of the utmost importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: January 11, 1912 Then again, the world had too long believed in the expediency of repentance. Repentance had become illogical, because it was supposed to be only necessary on the spur jof the moment and when a man was face to face with death. As to faith in God, man had no faith, and God had become a gaseous vertebrate, a non-entity. The French Revolutionists had announced what the world was fast accepting: There is no God but Reason. And so the god of Reason supplanted the true and living God of Israel. What the world needed, at the beginning of the nineteenth cen tury, was God. Not God in the heavens and in the past alone; but God tic-day and here with us as men. What the apostles of Christ knew, the world needed to know at first hand. It was a time when solid, scholarly, substantial scientific thought should take hold of the knowledge of God, and build towards Him and the Savior of the world. Some one has warned us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: August 1, 1912 It is necessary in order that order and union prevail among the pupils in the Sunday schools that it should exist among the teachers. There should be no contention. We hear sometimes Of disputes arising over points Of doctrine, some Of which are not essential, which need not be introduced, and need not be dis cussed - they are introduced in a Spirit Of contention, and cause angry feelings sometimes to be engendered in the bosoms Of the contestants. That should be avoided. It is a very bad example to set to the Sunday school to have contention among its Officials or among the leading spirits that are connected therewith. The value Of example I need not dwell upon in theory. It is like these motion pictures that are being presented which have such an impression upon the minds Of the people who attend them. Every good thing for which he is known, the good deeds that he performs, the kindly spirit that he carries, the humility that he exhibits, the faith in God and in the religion that he has espoused all this shines out in the character Of the teacher. So, brethren and sisters, if you want to make a good, permanent impression upon the rising generation, give them good teachings by precept and set them such an example that you may not be ashamed Of it when you appear before the. Bar Of eternal justice and we shall see as we are seen and know as we are known. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: October 3, 1912 N 0 one will say_ that this ideal is within the possibility of attain ment during man's three score and ten years of mortality. We must consider perfection as a relative term and apply it to different spheres of existence. As man climbs rung after rung of the gospel ladder that is to bring him to perfection, he still beholds his ideal in the distance, as the lofty Alps calling him up higher. The thing of importance to us is to know that each step towards the attainment of this ideal is as perfect as possible in our several spheres of life. Then when we conceive man as capable Of continual improvement and privileged to live eternally, and the ideal, which before seemed so lofty and remote, becomes much clearer, and is seen to be within the possibility of ultimate attainment. Let us realize the sublimity of this ideal and make it ours, and then our conduct in life will be right, because anything that savors of ungodliness will be out of harmony with our ideal. He who hitches his cart to a star is sure to ride higher than he who hitches it to a hill. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: July 18, 1912 The kingdom of God and His righteousness was the sole thought of the noble men and women who laid the foundation of this great commonwealth. Of them they spoke and sang by day, of them they dreamed by night. Hear the words of their faithful leader as soon as his feet had touched the soil, Here we shall build a city, and there shall stand the temple of our God. We point with pride to the fulfillment of that prophecy. It is evidence to us, if not to the unthinking world, that the leader of the pioneers was inspired by the Spirit of the living God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: April 4, 1912 It is the claim of the Latter-day Saints that the God of heaven has set up His kingdom on the earth, according to the prophecy of Daniel, and that He is preparing a people in His own way as sub jects of that kingdom. Judged in the light of reason and of the Holy Scriptures, this gives comfort to the souls of those who seek to know the truth of these things, for it brings to their knowledge the fact that God does not sleep, but that His purposes in the earth are reaching consummation. Even the planets move to fulfill His great design. Chance has no place in the plan of the universe. The light of reason is the light of the Spirit of God, which lighteth every one that cometh into the world. If God has spoken from the Heavens concerning this world, then reason will verify the truthfulness of those revelations of His mind and will. Sure and certain is His truth. Nothing can fall if He wills it to stand. The Lord God has spoken, whether you believe it or not - and it shall be known of all nations when he pours out His judgments upon them, because of their waywardness. If the tenets of Mor monism are not reasonable, do not accept them. But first be sure that prejudice has no place in your heart. In the light of reason the startling stories concerning Mormon ism that have gained currency in the world - I say, in the light of reason, they are simply ridiculous. The twentieth century, with all its advances in knowledge and civilization, would not tolerate such a people as the Mormons are given out to be by these scaremongers. The Mormons do not hide under a bushel, but they are set upon a hill and may be seen and known of all men for what they are - a sober and industrious people, God-serving and God-fearing. As a people, they are seeking to serve the present age. Their aim is not to be praised of men, for the reverse is the case, but to find satisfaction to their souls by serving their God to the best of their knowledge. They are imbued with the light of reason - a people who have accomplished much, and who will yet accomplish greater things in the land of their inheritance. The light of reason shines in the countenance of every true Latter-day Saint, and wins them place in the front ranks of the noblest of inen.
