Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: August 10, 1911 In the vision that I referred to just now, in section 76 of the Doctrine and Covenants, this splendid doctrine touched upon by our Savior, in the old times, is amplified; the Lord has revealed it to us, made it clear and plain, and it is one of the most glorious revela tions ever given to mortal beings, though it is not so regarded by the world. The time will come when they will understand it, per haps. I do not know that all the Latter-day Saints realize the fullness of its beauty and glory. They should read it repeatedly and ponder upon it. It opens eternity. Futurity is measurably made clear to the mental vision. The veil is lifted, and the glories of the celestial, the terrestrial, and the telestial spheres are plainly made manifest. We learn something about the opportunities that can be had by those who receive the gospel of Jesus Christ, and they will be entitled to this eternal and far more exceeding weight of glory than will come to those who, having rejected the truth or having neglected to receive it in this life, afterwards oh tain it in worlds to come. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: July 20, 1911 Mormon missionaries there is a deeper and stronger faith in the Christ than is possessed by these other laymen. Yes, the Latter day Saints not only have greater assurances of the divinity of Jesus Christ than their brethren in other Christian churches have; but these stronger assurances which the Latter-day Saints have are Showing and revealing themselves in actual faith which leads them to do and dare for their religion. Now, my brethren and sisters and friends, I rejoice in these as surances of the truth which have come to us. With all my heart I am proud of my standing in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am proud to be classed with the splendid men and women of this Church. I am proud of the history of this Church. I am proud of the sacrifices which the saints have made in the past and are making to-day. I tell you Mormonism is a reality; it is not a myth; it is nbt a phantom; it has been sent into the world to redeem the children of men. May we be true to its teachings; may we serve God and keep His commandments, is my prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. - Deseret News. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: August 24, 1911 The following quotation is but another unsolicited verification of the lack of that constant assurance which has in all dispensa tions enabled the true servant of God to speak as one having authority and not with a feeling of uncertainty. I have heard it said over and over again When you preachers of religion decide among yourselves what we ought to believe, we shall be ready to listen.' It is not a mere excuse; it is the ex pression of weariness with uncertainty. Different preachers not only contradict one another, but very few of us, if any, preach with that accent of assurance which carries conviction. We can not make the people believe more, or more deeply and strongly, than we do ourselves. We do not know where we are. Hesitation is never inspiring. I believe that we shall get out of this period of uncertainty, and that God will raise up in His own time, when conditions are favorable, another Paul or Augustine or Calvin, who will interpret for us our great gospel in terms that will be real and convincing to the modern mind. It will be a newer theology than anything we have yet had, and yet it will be recognized as the old. The hearts of men will leap in response to it, and will say: 'this is true. This is what we have been waiting for, ' and we shall all preach it with a consciousness that we are in line with all the faithful preachers of the past, and yet that we preach in language that is understood by the present generation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: February 9, 1911 Redeemer, His Son Jesus Christ. So there is but one plan of redemption and salvation for the human family. That being so, in the justice of God, who is the very embodiment of that eternal principle, all His children must, at some time and in some place, become acquainted with that gospel, learn what it is and have the opportunity of receiving it and obeying it, or of rejecting it if they will - for the principle of free agency 'is an eternal and abiding principle. It exists in all intelligent beings, the sons and the daughters of the great God who has given them that privilege to choose light or darkness, truth or error, good or evil, to take which course they prefer. Although there are, of course, many influences surrounding them, either for good or for evil, to which they may yield themselves, and to which they may become subject, yet in them, inherent, God-given, God-planted, is the principle of free agency, the power to receive or to reject the truth; to live accord ing to light, or to walk in darkness. So, at some period in the history of all the sons and daughters of Adam's race, there must come a time when they can hear that which God wants them to do, and take their choice. Whether they be in the body or out of the body, they are the same persons; people are not changed, simply because they shuffle of this mortal coil. They are the same persons as they were before they came into the body, and will be the same when they pass out of the body. Every indi vidual soul Will preserve its own identity, worlds without end. So, I say, there is a grand and glorious work to be performed, and I do not expect to cease my exertions and labors when the time comes for me to depart hence. I shall go, I presume, as I have done ever since I have been in the Church, where I am sent, and try to do the work allotted to me, and to do it with my might, to put my powers and energies into it, and to perform such duties as are incumbent upon me to the extent of my abilities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: February 23, 1911 The missionary methods Of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter day Saints are open and above board. There is in them nothing to hide or cover up. The missionaries have a simple, gospel message to deliver that conforms in all respects both as to doc trine and organization, with the gospel as set forth in the New Testament Of the Bible. They sincerely believe that they are under a binding moral obligation to declare this message of truth and salvation to all nations; but the only avenues through which they can reach the people are by public hall meetings, street preaching, door to door tracting, and the press, when Opportunity Offers. Strict order and decorum characterize the Latter-day Saints' hall meetings, and order is maintained at the street meetings so far as circumstances and the usual conditions of noise and con fusion in the Open air will admit. The tracts treat gospel principles exclusively, and are handed to people at their homes in the spirit of courtesy and friendliness, and with a pure desire to do good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: January 5, 1911 Diversity Of Opinion does not necessitate intolerance of spirit, nor should it embitter or set rational beings against each other. The Christ taught kindness, patience and charity. In His doctrine Of the fatherhood Of God He implied the brotherhood of man. The message we have to bear is universal - for every nation, kindred, tongue and people. While it is to be declared to all, it is to be enforced upon none. The free agency of man is a funda mental in the creed of the Latter-day Saints as received from the Prophet Joseph Smith as he Obtained it from Jesus the Christ. Free will, free thought, free speech, free action to the line of the liberty of others, form an essential part of our faith and practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: October 12, 1911 Is there a man possessing reasoning powers who can believe that any one of these quibbles would ever have been thought of had it not been necessary to devise some means to save some theory from being destroyed by the obvious meaning of the Savior's language? While the kingdom was yet in prospect, Jesus taught the people by parables and figures; but after its establishment, figures gave place to facts, commands and promises. Jesus commands His apostles to preach the gospel to every creature, promising salva tion to those who would believe and obey it. He also promised them the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth and enable them to unerringly perform the work he had assigned them. When it came, they began to preach as it inspired them; people were cut to the heart and made to cry out, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Peter did not tell them to be born again, because the time for figures had passed; he, therefore, said to them, Repent, and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. (acts 2: Thus he told them plainly, without a figure, to do that which would translate them into the kingdom of God's dear Son, and produce the change of state indicated by the figurative language of Jesus as used in the con versation with Nicodemus when He said: Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. When Peter thus addressed them, they that gladly received his word were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. N ow, are they born again? Surely, they are. When were they born again? Just when they did what Peter commanded them to do. Then, if they were born again when they were baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, will we not be born again when we do as they did'? And if it took this to introduce them into the kingdom of God then, will anything less do us now? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: June 15, 1911 N 0 man has spent his life in vain whose aim and ambition has been the betterment of himself. No fountain is so small but that heaven may be imaged in its bosom. Some years ago we met an old gentlemen who had been active in newspaper work in Salt Lake City during the early sixties, and who was well acquainted with President Brigham Young. After our introduction had been graciously acknowledged by the old gentleman, we began asking about the great man, who, under the guiding hand of Omnipotence, was so instrumental in directing the destinies of what was to become a mighty people, whose religion was to be heralded to all the nations of the world. He told us of his knowledge of the Mormons during those early days, of his intercourse with Brigham Young and of his impres sions of the residents of the territory of Utah. He was unstinted in his praise of the hardy pioneers and their fearlessness in overcoming the natural conditions which seemed to be against them. He said the language of many of them would have been a barrier, under any other circumstances, for it was with difficulty they were able to make themselves understood, for they came from several foreign countries. Without the leader they would all have perished, but with a boldness that, to many would have appeared terrifying, their dauntless leader wrested victory from the very jaws of death and under the guiding hand of Almighty God planted those people in the desert; and their fruit has been of the choicest variety and has done honor to the world and will yet be chosen from among men to standardize the mode of living. We think of Jesus as a person, and as God. If this is so, is it impossible to believe that as we are, God has been, and that as God is we may become? If reason by analogy has any force at all, it would seem that is the only logical conception of the Deity. But, as already said, the possibility or impossibility of belief has no bearing on the subject. The only question is, what has been revealed? The scriptures certainly represent God as a person. In the scrip tures we are told that man was formed in the image and like ness of God. There should be no difficulty in comprehending what is meant by this twofold expression, for in the same sacred record (gen. We read that Adam became the father of a son born in his own likeness, after his image. That man was formed in the image and likeness of God is, therefore, a statement that means no more and no less than the similar statement that the son of Adam was born in his likeness and image. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: September 14, 1911 President Clawson said that this session would be given over to the discussion of such questions as might be upon the minds of the presidents in relation to their work. The question was raised as to how long unpaid accounts for the Millennial Star should be allowed to run. A motion was made that the Star be stopped where subscribers were a year in arrears. It was suggested that a year was too long to allow such accounts to run, and an amendment was offered that the Star be stopped where there were arrears of six months. Some of the presidents were of the Opinion that such a rule would work a hardship in some cases. Some members were unable to pay, and. Were isolated from branches of the Church, the Star being the only means of keeping them in touch therewith. President Clawson said an exception could be made in such cases. It was necessary to have a rule, but the presidents could use their judgment as to when an exception ought to be made. With this understanding, the amendment was unanimously agreed upon. President Clawson desired an expression from the presidents as to their experiences with the tracting record that was agreed upon at a former convention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: November 16, 1911 We know that the thief was not permitted to go straight to heaven, for Jesus said unto Nicodemus, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God (john 3: and the thief, not having attended to these ordinances, could not be allowed that privilege. Again we read: The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre she began to weep. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself. And saith unto him, Rabboni, which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. (john 20: 16, Here we have the assertion of Jesus Himself, that during the three days that His body lay in the tomb, His Spirit did not go into the presence of His Father. Logically, it must follow, neither did that of the thief. Jesus asserted that To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise, and upon His return to the earth He informed Mary that He had not ascended to His Father. The question naturally arises, where is paradise? We are not left in doubt upon this subject. The scriptures plainly point out the duties that Christ was called to perform, while His body rested in the tomb, and also what paradise is. Turning to another scripture we find the following: For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the esh, but quickened by the Spirit, by which also He went and preached unto the spirits in prison which sometime were disobedient, when once the long suffering of God waited in the days of Noah; while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. (i. Peter 3: 18, 19, Here we have an account of what He was doing during the three days absence from the body. He was preaching unto the spirits in prison, and this affords a clear explanation as to where the thief went. It was a spirit world, where he would have the opportunity of hearing the Savior preach the gospel of deliverance to the captive spirits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: October 26, 1911 There is another difference, however, namely, that we believe in the divine calling of Joseph Smith. But what injury can this belief be to the world? We accord to the world the right to be lieve what and how they may, and ask the same right in return. We deny them the right to prevent us from believing as we please, so long as our beliefs do not interfere with the exercise of their religious rights on their part. What did this Joseph Smith teach Anything that will harm the world He taught God to men. He has revealed the Father and the Son to the modern world, as to their form and substance for the ideas concerning the Godhead given in the New Testament had become vague and mystical in the minds of men. He taught that Jesus was in the express image of His Father, that He was literally the Son of God, that He died for the sins of the world, and rose from the dead with the very body which He had in mortality and now sits enthroned on the right hand of the Father. Let me ask again what harm such teachings can do to mankind Nothing. It can do none. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: August 31, 1911 Third, the Mormon people are not peasants or illiterate. Some of their forefathers may have been, but they are not. Their leaders are graduates of Harvard, Cornell, Michigan, or German universities, and some of their young men lead the world to-day in scholarship. Utah has a strong public school and university system; education and music are her pride. She has over five thousand college and university students. The chief charges against the Mormons have been polygamy, deception, bigotry, and the seeking of political power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: July 27, 1911 The real Christian is not necessarily he who regularly each Sab bath dons his Sunday best and sallies forth with sober face and disapproving frown upon the world's follies, but he who each day can thank God that he lives, and prays to be of service to his fellow-men, helping and being helped, has found a nugget which will grow brighter with constant use. (heb. 7: 18 In his epistle to the Galatians he informed them that they had been under the law only for a time, and then he asked how it was that now, after they had known God, or rather had been known of God, they turned again to become in bondage to that same law which he designated as the weak and beggarly elements.
