The study finds that both nonprofit organizations and religious congregations that primarily serve Latinos offer a wide range of services. Many of these groups are located in the suburbs. While Latino nonprofits constitute a significant economic presence in the region, the majority of organizations remain small. Data on nonprofits are drawn from the National Center for Charitable Statistics, and data on churches were collected by telephone survey.

Since the 1990s, Central Ohio has seen an increase in the number of foreign-born residents. There has been an uneven incorporation of new immigrants in Central Ohio marked by recognition of the need for immigrant labor, but lacking the infrastructure to adapt to a linguistically and culturally different population. Nonprofit organizations have responded to the needs of the young Latino community in Central Ohio and have provided critical services. By examining the literature on nonprofits and advocacy, as well as the literature on new immigrant destinations, I argue that the immigrant-serving nonprofit organizations in Central Ohio are developing into organizations that are not only providing social services; they are representing the political and social claims of the burgeoning Latino community.

This study also examines how the integration of Critical Race and Latino Critical Theory principles can create knowledge and understanding of marginalized groups, which can lead to more well informed innovation and practice. There are currently fifty-four million Latinos living in the United States, which makes it the largest ethnic and racial minority group in the country. In the United States, education, outreach, and treatment for HIV/AIDS focuses on all groups as the virus transcends barriers of race and sexuality, but Latinos face significant issues related to culture and immigration status that require nuanced and informed approaches to gain the community's trust and deliver services. A critical approach to innovation can lead to the development of new programs and foster trust between the Latino community and nonprofit organizations.
