Book excerpt: No Sleepis a visual history of the halcyon days of New York City club life as told through flyer art. Spanning the late 80s through the late 90s, when nightlife buzz travelled via flyers and word of mouth,No Sleepfeatures a collection of artwork from the personal archives of NYC DJs, promoters, club kids, nightlife impresarios, and the artists themselves. Club flyers, by design, were ephemeral objects distributed on street corners, outside of nightclubs and concert halls, in barbershops and retail shops, and were not intended to be preserved for posterity. Through the 90s, they became both increasingly prevalent and more sophisticated as printing technology evolved. Overnight, however, with the advent of the internet, theflyer essentially disappeared, despite it being common at one time for promoters to print thousands of flyers for any given event. Recently, these flyers have become sought-after collector's items.

Book Synopsis The Making of Latin London by : Patria Roman-Velazquez
Download or read book The Making of Latin London written by Patria Roman-Velazquez and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how Latin American people and cultural practices have moved from one continent to another, and specifically to London. How do Latin Americans experience such a process and what part do different people play in the re-making of Latin identities in the neighbourhoods, parks, bars and dance clubs of London? Through a critical engagement with theories of globalization, the geography of power, cultural identity and the transformation of places, the book explores how the formation of Latin identities is directly related to wider social, economic and political processes. Drawing on the voices of migrant peoples, community activists, shop owners, sports organizers, club owners, dancers, dance teachers, musicians and disc jockeys, the book argues that the micro movements of people - through a shopping mall or across a dance floor in a club - are directly connected to global processes involving the regulated movement of citizens, sounds and images across national boundaries and through cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their removal from England's National Curriculum in 1988, and claims of elitism, Latin and Greek are increasingly re-entering the 'mainstream' educational arena. Since 2012, there have been more students in state-maintained schools in England studying classical subjects than in independent schools, and the number of schools offering Classics continues to rise in the state-maintained sector. The teaching and learning of Latin and Greek is not, however, confined to the classroom: community-based learning for adults and children is facilitated in newly established regional Classics hubs in evenings and at weekends, in universities as part of outreach, and even in parks and in prisons. This book investigates the motivations of teachers and learners behind the rise of Classics in the classroom and in communities, and explores ways in which knowledge of classical languages is considered valuable for diverse learners in the 21st century. The role of classical languages within the English educational policy landscape is examined, as new possibilities exist for introducing Latin and Greek into school curricula. The state of Classics education internationally is also investigated, with case studies presenting the status quo in policy and practice from Australasia, North America, the rest of Europe and worldwide. The priorities for the future of Classics education in these diverse locations are compared and contrasted by the editors, who conjecture what strategies are conducive to success.

Time ticked slowly with The Lone Ranger on black-and-white TV sets, newspaper cartoons like Roy Rogers and nine-cent Saturday morning kiddie movies. Teens joined the Latin Club, danced at the city swimming pool's upstairs pavilion and swooned over Elvis Presley at the YMCA. Parents hosted bridge parties, followed Sam Sneed at the Greensboro Open and listened to Ella Fitzgerald at Club Kilby. Travel back with local author Alice Sink to the halcyon days of country fairs, stock car racing at Bowman Gray Stadium and Betty Crocker. Featuring nostalgic Triad recipes and an "Older than Dirt" quiz, this compendium of memories will make anyone of a certain age with roots around these parts feel like a kid in a candy store.
