Book Synopsis The Economies of Latin America by : Cesar Rodriguez
Download or read book The Economies of Latin America written by Cesar Rodriguez and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Latin America accounts for approximately 7 percent of the world economy, easily accessible information on the economies of the region is not always easy to find. The existing literature on Latin American economics usually assumes some previous familiarity with the region and is focused on government policy choices. The Economies of Latin America is a book for the general reader needing a quick introduction to the economics of the region. The book is composed of three parts: the first explains Latin America’s economic history and a description of the central economic challenges of the region. The second offers country-specific details. The final part deals with the economic future of the region where the authors put forth a Latin American version of success. This book is a useful, in-depth introduction for students of Latin American economics as well as the general reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latin American economies, once among the most productive in the world, were already falling behind the advancing economies of the North Atlantic by 1800. A century later, nearly all were "underdeveloped." In the twentieth century, most grew respectably but none managed to catch up. What explains these trends? How important were Latin America's changing relations with the evolving global economy? What hypotheses should be rejected or modified?

Book Synopsis The Economic History of Latin America since Independence by : Victor Bulmer-Thomas
Download or read book The Economic History of Latin America since Independence written by Victor Bulmer-Thomas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economic History of Latin America seeks to explain why, despite the region's abundance of natural resources and a favourable ratio of land to labour, not a single republic of Latin America has achieved the status of a developed country after nearly two centuries free from colonial rule. Taking its narrative from the end of the colonial epoch to the early 1990s, this book provides a comprehensive, balanced portrait of the factors affecting economic progress in Latin America. This book explains the successes and failures of export-led growth in the nineteenth century, and the withdrawal, after the depression of 1929, of many countries into a model of import-substitution industrialization. The debt crisis of the 1980s effectively ended hopes for the inward-looking approach, however, and the author examines the routes through which Latin American republics pursued a new version of export-led growth.
Book Synopsis The Economic Development of Latin America in the Twentieth Century by : André A. Hofman
Download or read book The Economic Development of Latin America in the Twentieth Century written by André A. Hofman and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hofman, a researcher with the Chile-based Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, uses growth accounting methods and previously unavailable long-term series data to assess the economic performance of the region during the century from a comparative and historical perspective. In particular he compares Latin American economies to those of advanced capitalist economies, to newly industrialized economies, and to Spain and Portugal because of the historical ties. He looks at the reasons for the poor or negative growth during the 1980s and the apparent recovery in the 1990s and at such problems as debt, income inequality, high inflation, cyclical instability, and political and policy instability. Book Synopsis Structural Reforms, Productivity and Technological Change in Latin America by : Jorge M. Katz
Download or read book Structural Reforms, Productivity and Technological Change in Latin America written by Jorge M. Katz and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten to fifteen years, profound structural reforms have moved Latin America and the Caribbean from closed, state-dominated economies to ones that are more market-oriented and open. Policymakers expected that these changes would speed up growth. This book is part of a multi-year project to determine whether these expectation have been fulfilled. Focusing on technological change, the impact of the reforms on the process of innovation is examined. It notes that the development process is proving to be highly heterogenous across industries, regions and firms and can be described as strongly inequitable. This differentiation that has emerged has implications for job creation, trade balance, and the role of small and medium sized firms. This ultimately suggests, amongst other things, the need for policies to better spread the use of new technologies.
