Book excerpt: 'What I know about is absence; the endless geography of yearning...’ For Nedim Gürsel, the state of exile isn’t a static condition, applying to a single person in a specific place, but an entire landscape of longing, through which he, and countless other émigrés, must travel; a mobile experience, a moveable feast. In these stories Gürsel crisscrosses modern Europe, settling in some cities — like Paris — for many years, visiting others several times, decades apart. But none of them quite constitutes home. Nor is return to his native Turkey — from which Gürsel was himself exiled for his political writings in the 70s — ever really possible, though through his stories, dreams, and memories, he makes many attempts. Art, history, architecture, contemporary politics... all these feed into the swirling palette of colours with which Gürsel paints the migrant experience. Not to mention a host of unforgettable characters: the lonely Mustafa who cares only for the fate of his beloved poplar tree, back home on the Anatolian plain; the tragic Madame Suslova recalling memories of a lover who squandered her money on the roulette tables of Istanbul; or the Coci family making their desperate way through the Fréjus Tunnel, as re-imagined by an eager documentary maker. Indeed such is the poetry of Gürsel’s writing, it is little surprise that even in exile he is regarded as one of Turkey’s greatest living writers.

Book excerpt: This is a wonderfully colourful and deeply poignant memoir of growing up in a 'single end' - one room in a Glasgow tenement - during and immediately after the Second World War. Although young Robert Douglas's life was blighted by the cruel if sporadic presence of his father, it was equally blessed by the love of his mother, Janet. While the story of their life together is in some ways very sad, it is also filled with humorous and happy memories. "Night Song of The Last Tram" is a superb evocation of childhood and of a Glasgow of trams and tenements that has long since disappeared.

Book excerpt: In the heart of Montreal in 1953, private investigator Eddie Wade witnesses the brutal late-night murder of Saul Blumenthal, a Jewish German immigrant. The police suddenly and mysteriously close the case on this unsolved murder in less than twenty-four hours. Smelling a rat, Eddie decides to investigate and find justice for the victim. But Eddie soon lands in the center of a miasma of deception and ruthlessness where the edge between justice and revenge is blurred and the threshold leading to redemption is only a faint hope. Deep and brooding secrets lurk in Montreals Mile End neighborhood, and as Eddie discovers more about the victim and his past, he must confront the darkness that lies within his own soul. With the facts adding up to an unexpected conclusion, Eddie realizes that more than just his investigation is at stake. Someones got it in for him, and Eddie had better tread carefully or he may be the next one put on ice. Written in the tradition of the hard-boiled school of detective fiction, Eddie Wade follows in the footsteps of Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, and Mike Hammer in The Last Tram on Dorchester Street.

Book excerpt: In an ironic reversal of the American dream, a staggering 20,000 members of the immigrant community of Midwood, Brooklyn (known as Little Pakistan), voluntarily left the United States after 9/11. Tram Nguyen reveals the human cost of the domestic war on terror and examines the impact of post-9/11 policies on people targeted because of immigration status, nationality, and religion. Nguyen’s evocative narrative reporting--about the families, detainees, local leaders, community advocates, and others living on the front lines--tells the stories of people who witnessed and experienced firsthand the unjust detainment or deportation of family members, friends, and neighbors. We meet Mohammad Butt, who died in detention in New Jersey, and the Saleems, who flee Queens for Canada. We even follow a self-proclaimed ’citizen patroller’ who monitors and detains immigrants on the U.S.-Mexico border. We Are All Suspects Now, in the words of Mike Davis, “takes us inside a dark world . . . where the American Dream is fast turning into a nightmare and suggests proactive responses to stop our growing climate of xenophobia, intimidation, and discrimination."

Book excerpt: “A fine tribute to the thousand-strong fleet of E/1 trams which gave such sterling service to Londoners for nearly fifty years, including two world wars.” —Tramway Review Probably the single most numerous of tramcar constructed for operation on Britain’s first generation electric tramways, the London County Council’s ‘E/1’ class had an operational history that stretched for almost fifty years. The first were produced towards the end of the first decade of the 20th century and the last were withdrawn with the conclusion of ‘Operation Tramaway’—the final conversion of the once great London tramway system—in July 1952. Over the years, more than 1,000 were built for operation by the LCC with similar cars being constructed for a number of the council operated systems in the capital prior to the creation of the LPTB in July 1933. The last batch—effectively rebuilds of single-deck cars that had once operated through the Kingsway Subway prior to its modernization—not completed until the early 1930s. During the 1920s the LCC cars had undergone a Pullmanisation program and, during the following decade, a number underwent the LPTB’s Rehabilitation scheme. Moreover, with the removal of the restriction on the use of enclosed lower-deck vestibules, many others were converted to full-enclosed during that decade. Although withdrawals commenced in the 1930s, as the tram system north of the river was converted to trolleybus operation, and others were lost as a result of enemy action during the war, a sizable number survived to the system’s final days. This book examines the history of this important class from development through to preservation.

Book excerpt: There have been passenger tramways in Britain for 150 years, but it is a rollercoaster story of rise, decline and a steady return. Trams have come and gone, been loved and hated, popular and derided, considered both wildly futuristic and hopelessly outdated by politicians, planners and the public alike. Horse trams, introduced from the USA in the 1860s, were the first cheap form of public transport on city streets. Electric systems were developed in nearly every urban area from the 1890s and revolutionised town travel in the Edwardian era.A century ago, trams were at their peak, used by everyone all over the country and a mark of civic pride in towns and cities from Dover to Dublin. But by the 1930s they were in decline and giving way to cheaper and more flexible buses and trolleybuses. By the 1950s all the major systems were being replaced. Londons last tram ran in 1952 and ten years later Glasgow, the city most firmly linked with trams, closed its network down. Only Blackpool, famous for its decorated cars, kept a public service running and trams seemed destined only for scrapyards and museums.A gradual renaissance took place from the 1980s, with growing interest in what are now described as light rail systems in Europe and North America. In the UK and Ireland modern trams were on the streets of Manchester from 1992, followed successively by Sheffield, Croydon, the West Midlands, Nottingham, Dublin and Edinburgh (2014). Trams are now set to be a familiar and significant feature of twenty-first century urban life, with more development on the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some Chairs. Broken Chairs" is a 2013 memoir written by Yike Guo. The Author describes in this memoir his own experiences in the most recent two years participating in student conferences simulating the working procedures, negotiations across Europe, notably Model United Nations conferences (Model UN) and simulations of the EU and NATO. He took various roles and travelled to a wide range of countries, while managing to also study in his home town. He also possesses a frevent interest in international relations, human rights, diplomacy, art and cultures, among others. This memoir does not only reflect moments that were daunting and frustrating, but also those who were exceptionally rewarding and memorable. The author decided to immortalize some of the prominent and best moments in his life until then in this book. However, for many reasons, though worked hard on it, he could not cover everything in greater depth. The author provided more fragments of personal collection full of memories, anecdotes and expositions, but also some stories behind the scenes, expectations and realities, comedies and tragedies, and about his job rather than a patterned guidebook for everyone. Yike Guo wrote about some people who inspired and changed him, and gave insights to people wishing to find out more about what a Model conference is looking like, what one could learn and which motivation he had. The memoir contains also a great range of selections of position papers, articles and post-conference reports by his friends presenting the readership a different view than the author ́s own. Starting with his first conference two years ago, the author mostly chronologically listed his journeys and events and ended in April 2013, having gone and thrived at some twenty of the most prestigious and meritorious European conferences, projects and dialogues.

Book excerpt: From the horse-drawn trams of the nineteenth century to the larger electric models of the early twentieth, this reliable form of public transport revolutionised town travel by making it affordable enough for working people to use. From the 1930s, the rise of the trolleybus, which also picked up power from overhead cables but ran without expensive tracks, looked set to supersede the tram – but ultimately, by the 1950s, both fell victim to motor buses and private cars. However, since the 1980s the environmental benefits of light rail have encouraged a growing comeback for trams on our crowded and polluted city streets. Using beautiful contemporary photographs, this is the fascinating story of the rise, fall and revival of this everyday, yet sometimes controversial, mode of urban transport.

Book excerpt: A history of London’s horse, steam, cable, and electric tramways, and the operation that ended an era. Includes photos. The final volume in the Regional Tramways series focuses on the history of tram operation in the London area. Starting the story with the pioneering horse tramways operated by George Francis Train in the 1860s, the book narrates how the various horse, steam, cable, and electric tramways evolved in the period leading up to the creation of the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933. The primary focus of the book is the period immediately after World War II when, following the retention of the tramways for longer than anticipated, the process of conversion—codenamed Operation Tramaway—saw almost 1,000 trams eliminated from the streets of London in less than two years. Also covered are the two second-generation tramways—the Docklands Light Railway and Croydon Tramlink—which now serve parts of the Greater London area. The book concludes with an overview of those London trams that survive into preservation.
