The setting is New England, where a struggling writer, Nan Dale, discovers something through a series of mysterious events at this hotel. There is a phantom steam locomotive that appears on a train bridge over a parkway that has the ability to take people back to the 1800's when railroad was king. Nan decides to board the phantom train and finds herself back in the past where she finds a chest of money on her ancestor's property which is buried underneath a well. When she tries to bring the money back on the phantom train, she discovers it turns to ashes. With the help of an old friend "Professor" who lives in the hotel in the city of Waterville, Nan finds the clues to why the phantom train exists, and it is then that she will have to make a moral decision whether to stay here in the present as a struggling writer or go back to the past and live among the wealthy. She must make this choice soon because according the laws of physics, the phantom train is losing energy in the present and it will make only one more trip back to the past in the 1800s where it will arrive at its final destination, never to return.

Book excerpt: The story of a young Chinese girl who arrives in North America only to discover that her father has died building the railway. This powerful, unforgettable and multi-award-winning tale is based on the lives of the Chinese who settled on the west coast of North America in the early 1900s. Left behind in China by her father, who has gone to North America to find work, Choon-yi has made her living by selling her paintings in the market. When her father writes one day and asks her to join him, she joyously sets off, only to discover that he has been killed. Choon-yi sees the railway and the giant train engines that her father died for, and she is filled with an urge to paint them. But her work disappoints her until a ghostly presence beckons her to board a train where she meets the ghosts of the men who died building the railway. She is able to give them peace by returning their bones to China where they were born. Ghostly, magical and yet redeeming, this tale by Paul Yee is superbly illustrated by Harvey Chan. Book excerpt: The cart brought the boys back out onto the original entry platform they had used earlier when they first came aboard as a squad of five. They all breathed a sigh of relief. There was definitely one major problem the trio noticed when they emerged; it was deathly quiet. There was nobody left in the carnival. A car moved on the roads surrounding the park, but there was definitely no obvious signs that there was anyone around. What time do you make it, Dave? Garth asked after a brief silence, through tears and a large lump in his throat. As soon as the bars lifted they stepped out, weak at the knees from the exhausted adrenaline. Dave lifted a weakened, quivering arm to his face. Its half one, according to my watch. All they could do with their remaining energy was to climb down from the platform. They looked around, through tears, trying to rearrange their minds and figure out what to do next. Dave slumped to the ground, resting against one of the posts elevating the platform. Garth joined him. So many questions spun round in their heads, making them all nauseous. Had they really woken a sleeping demon? Had they really just seen two of their best friends get murdered in cold blood? Why had they been chosen to wake it? Had they even been chosen, or were they in completely the wrong place at the wrong time? What could they do? Where would they go next? Would anyone even believe anything came out with? They couldnt go to the police. They simply wouldnt believe their story. So that was already a couple of questions answered.

Book excerpt: The hectic seaside town of Brompton-On-Sea sizzles in the summer heatwave. Holiday makers and locals alike find distraction and amusement on the pier, where the Cranville family have owned and run the fun fair for generations. The rides on offer rival any of those offered by the biggest theme parks in the country, but at a far more reasonable cost. Pete Cranville, the senior member of the clan, assures that all his attractions offer their guests true value for money. The Ghost Train is a particular favourite with visitors. Located on the very edge of the pier, it might seem a little out of the way, but it is still one of the fair’s most popular rides. And for those who make it out alive, it truly is a marvellous experience.

Book excerpt: The ruins of an industrial past provide the perfect haunting grounds in this spirited Ohio city. Run down the apparitions that float down Rubber City streets and façades like the shadow of a passing blimp. Stroll along forgotten canals amid the restless chatter and clank of spirits cut down before their hard lives became easier. Catch a show at the Civic Theater with a “former” engineer who prophesied that death wouldn’t keep him from work. A more restive spirit is that of John Tedrow, a twenty-something mauled and murdered during a drunken brawl in 1882; he wails for help and resolution. In this ghostly tour through Akron’s haunted and sometimes brutal past, paranormal specialist and historian Jeri Holland digs into the ghost tales and local legends that linger here like this city’s industrial heritage. “Haunted Akron is a tour of events, places and creepy legends.” —Ohio.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Bestseller In Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, Theroux recreates an epic journey he took thirty years ago, a giant loop by train (mostly) through Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, China, Japan, and Siberia. In short, he traverses all of Asia top to bottom, and end to end. In the three decades since he first travelled this route, Asia has undergone phenomenal change. The Soviet Union has collapsed, China has risen, India booms, Burma slowly smothers, and Vietnam prospers despite the havoc unleashed upon it the last time Theroux passed through. He witnesses all this and more in a 25,000 mile journey, travelling as the locals do, by train, car, bus, and foot. His odyssey takes him from Eastern Europe, still hungover from Communism, through tense but thriving Turkey, into the Caucasus, where Georgia limps back toward feudalism while its neighbour Azerbaijan revels in oil-driven capitalism. As he penetrates deeper into Asia’s heart, his encounters take on an otherworldly cast. The two chapters that follow show us Turkmenistan, a profoundly isolated society at the mercy of an almost comically egotistical dictator, and Uzbekistan, a ruthless authoritarian state. From there, he retraces his steps through India, Mayanmar, China, and Japan, providing his penetrating observations on the changes these countries have undergone. Brilliant, caustic, and totally addictive, Ghost Train to the Eastern Star is Theroux at his very best.
