Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last of Nelson's Captains The last of Nelson's Captains was born in 1781, entered the Navy 1793, and died in 1866. As a midshipman, he shared in Lord Howe's actions which resulted in the victor of the "First of June." He saw much active service in the West Indies, both as a midshipman and as a lieutenant, especially during the war at San Domingo. As a commander, he also had much active service in the West Indies, particularly in chasing and in cutting out the enemy's privateers. As a captain, Earl St. Vincent, describing him as "My nephew of whom I am very proud," said he had merited the esteem and regard of every officer he had served under, from his first entrance into the Navy. Lord Nelson described him as always giving him pleasure. Sir John Borlase Warren said he was a real treasure in his squadron. Sir Pulteney Malcolm said he was the best frigate captain in the service. On attaining the higher ranks of the profession, his conduct and judgment elicited the approbation and admiration of every Administration which employed him; especially when on the Coast of Greece in 1828, and during the Civil War in Portugal, 1831 to 1834. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Captains: A Romance of Bonaparte and Nelson Yes, gentle reader, if you have given the matter a thought, - being a reader I assume that you are thoughtful, - you have divined that this is an Historical Novel. If you belong to that unfortunate class which takes no delight in that ancient and honorable, and to me fascinating, - to say nothing of its usefulness - form of romance, lay the book aside, commend yourself for the lofty conception you cherish as to what real high-class fiction should be, and which you will not permit to be contaminated or vitiated by contact with a mere story or romance like this, and go on your red-bloodless way rejoicing, ignorant of what you miss, and therefore - by all the canons of ancient aphorism - happy. B: From His Lordships Manuscripts Towards the close of the year 1770, during the Christmas holidays, when the Rev. Edmund Nel son was at Bath for his health, and the greater part of his family, then consisting of eight chil dren, was left at the parsonage-house at Burn ham Thorpe, in Norfolk; Horatio, then in his thirteenth year, who had often expressed a wish not to be a burden to his father, happened to read in the County paper the appointment of his mo ther's brother, Captain Maurice Suckling, to the Raisonable of 64 guns. Upon which he exclaimed, 'do, brother a William, write to my father at Bath, and tell him I should like to go with uncle Man rice to sea.' William, who had been the constant companion of Horatio, and was little more than seventeen months older than his brother, 'wrote accordingly. Various disappointments with the difficulties'of a narrbw income, -had chilled in the mind of mr.'nelson all idea of patronage from his connections! The daring-resolution, however, of his boy Horatio gradually warmed the less san guine mind of the father, and infirm health ren dering him anxious not to lose an opportunity, which seemed to offer so desirable a provision for one of his sons, be resolved to.write to Captain Suckling. From the answer which Mr: Nelson received, the following passage is remembered: 6 What has poor Horace done, who'is so weak. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nelson at Naples: A Journal for June 10-30, 1799; Refuting Recent Misstatements of Captain Mahan and Professor J. K. Laughton All of us who are true Englishmen honour the memory of Nelson, and it is therefore with some difficulty that, in publishing fresh evidence as to the affair at Naples, I also answer, as I am obliged to do, attacks denouncing me as "Nelson's accuser." That role I most certainly shall not accept. But just as it is possible to honour William III.'s memory, or Clive's, or Napoleon's, and yet to tell or listen to the truth in the affairs of Limerick, Omichund, and D'Enghien, so it is in Nelson's case; and it seems to me that patriotism and hero-worship are running riot in a field not theirs, when popular appeals about Trafalgar, prejudicial to impartial historical inquiry, are put forward to induce belief that Nelson committed no crime at Naples. Circumstances now force me to this subject again. When I wrote before (English Historical Review, April 1898), bringing forward for the first time in this country the Italian evidence, and Sacchinelli's in particular, it was with the consciousness that other evidence existed which was then beyond my reach. With much of this I have since been furnished by the Marchese Maresca, the chief authority for the period, for whose generous and unwearying kindness (though not meaning for a moment to suggest that he is responsible for the use here made of it) I have no words adequate to express my gratitude. Among the authorities so obtained, and new to English ears, may be noted the Memoria of Bocquet, the Rapporto of Lomonaco, and the Memoires of "B. N (ardini), temoin oculaire." Above all, there is the newly discovered Compendio dei fatti accadutti in Napoli, a minute of the report drawn up by Micheroux for Acton, which decisively confirms the most suspected statements of Sacchinelli. To this fresh matter something more properly my own will be found added, as e.g. Ruffo's letter of June 26, and the letters from the rebel prisoners, L'Aurora Moreno, Landini. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1773 the 14-year old Horatio Nelson took part in an expedition to the Arctic, which came close to ending his naval career before it had begun. The expedition was to find a navigable northern passage between the Atlantic and Pacific, and was supported by the Royal Society and King George III. Two bomb vessels HMS Racehorse and Carcass were fitted out and strengthened under the command of Captain Hon. Constantine Phipps. It was an extremely cold Arctic summer and the ships became locked in ice far from Spitzbergen and were unable to cut their way out until days later when the wind changed and the ice broke up. The ships were extricated and returned home. On the trip, the young Nelson had command of one of the smaller boats of the ships, a four-oared cutter manned by twelve seamen. In this he helped to save the crew of a boat belonging to the Racehorse from an attack by a herd of enraged walruses. He also had a more famous encounter with a polar bear, while attempting to obtain a bearskin as a present for his father, an exploit that later became part of the Nelson legend. Drawing on the ship's journals and expedition commander Phipps' journal from the National Archives, the book creates a picture of the expedition and life on board. Using the ships' muster books it also details the ship's crews giving the different roles and ranks in the ships. The book is illustrated using some of the ship's drawings and charts and pictures of many objects used on the ship, while a navigational chart of the route taken has been created from the logbooks. The book also looks at the overall concept of naval exploration as set in train by Joseph Banks and the Royal Society. The fact that the expedition failed as a result of poor planning with potentially tragic results demonstrates the difficulties and uncertainties of such an expedition. It also looks at a great naval commander at the earliest stage of his career and considers how the experience might have shaped his later career and attitudes. Other great captains and voyages are discussed alongside Nelson, including Captain Cook and his exploration of the south seas and the later ill-fated northern journeys of Franklin and Shackleton.
