Whenever they enter a new town, Jill not only knows where the best weapons and items are sold, but how much they cost and what kind of weapon they need for the inevitable boss battle that always follows. If they are trying to solve a new puzzle no one in their party has run into before, Jill instantly knows how to complete it, and in good time, too. Yet Jill's apparent psychic powers are put to the test when Dale's hometown vanishes into thin air without warning, forcing her to reveal the truth: She, Dale, and their friends are characters in a video game, a game Jill has played through so many times that she has memorized everything, from the locations of secret items to helpful glitches that make beating the game so much easier. But now a new glitch has infected the game and Jill doesn't know what caused it, forcing her, Dale, and the other members of their party to go on a quest to find out what caused this glitch and how to fix it. Yet as the glitch consumes more and more of their world, it may be too late for Dale and his friends to save everyone and everything they know and love from its destructive reach. Book Synopsis I Am Legend as American Myth by : Amy J. Ransom
Download or read book I Am Legend as American Myth written by Amy J. Ransom and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend has spawned a series of iconic horror and science fiction films, including The Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971) and I Am Legend (2007). The compelling narrative of the last man on earth, struggling to survive a pandemic that has transformed the rest of humanity into monsters, has become an American myth. While the core story remains intact, filmmakers have transformed the details over time, reflecting changing attitudes about race and masculinity. This reexamination of Matheson's novel situates the tale of one man's conflicted attitude about killing racialized "others" within its original post-World War II context, engaging the question of post-traumatic stress disorder. The author analyzes the several film adaptations, with a focus on the casting and interpretations of protagonist Robert Neville.
Book Synopsis Maps and Legends by : Michael Chabon
Download or read book Maps and Legends written by Michael Chabon and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize winner explores the literary joys of sci-fi and superheroes, gumshoes and goblins, and the stories that bring us together. “I read for entertainment, and I write to entertain. Period.” Such is the manifesto of Michael Chabon, an author of indisputable literary renown who maintains a fierce appreciation of the seductive arts of so-called “genre” fiction. In this lively collection of sixteen critical and personal essays, the author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay champions the cause of westerns, horror, and all the stories, comics, and pulp fiction that get pushed aside when literary discussion turns serious. Whether he’s taking up Superman or Sherlock Holmes, Poe or Proust, Chabon makes it his emphatic mission to explore the reasons we tell one another tales. Throughout, Chabon reveals his own blooming as a writer, from The Mysteries of Pittsburgh to The Yiddish Policeman’s Union. He is living proof of his theory that the stories that give us great pleasure are in many ways our truest, best art—the building blocks of our shared imagination—and in Maps and Legends, he “makes an inviting case for bridging the gap between popular and literary writing” (O, The Oprah Magazine). This ebook features a biography of the author.
Book Synopsis Apocalypse TV by : Michael G. Cornelius
Download or read book Apocalypse TV written by Michael G. Cornelius and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the world may be upon us, but it certainly is taking its sweet time playing out. The walkers on The Walking Dead have been "walking" for nearly a decade. There are now dozens of apocalyptic television shows and we use the "end times" to describe everything from domestic politics and international conflict, to the weather and our views of the future. This collection of new essays asks what it means to live in a world inundated with representations of the apocalypse. Focusing on such series as The Walking Dead, The Strain, Battlestar Galactica, Doomsday Preppers, Westworld, The Handmaid's Tale, they explore how the serialization of the end of the world allows for a closer examination of the disintegration of humanity--while it happens. Do these shows prepare us for what is to come? Do they spur us to action? Might they even be causing the apocalypse?
Book Synopsis Transmedia Storytelling and the Apocalypse by : Stephen Joyce
Download or read book Transmedia Storytelling and the Apocalypse written by Stephen Joyce and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book confronts the question of why our culture is so fascinated by the apocalypse. It ultimately argues that while many see the post-apocalyptic genre as reflective of contemporary fears, it has actually co-evolved with the transformations in our mediascape to become a perfect vehicle for transmedia storytelling. The post-apocalyptic offers audiences a portal to a fantasy world that is at once strange and familiar, offers a high degree of internal consistency and completeness, and allows for a diversity of stories by different creative teams in the same story world. With case studies of franchises such as The Walking Dead and The Terminator, Transmedia Storytelling and the Apocalypse offers analyses of how shifts in media industries and reception cultures have promoted a new kind of open, world-building narrative across film, television, video games, and print. For transmedia scholars and fans of the genre, this book shows how the end of the world is really just the beginning...

Book Synopsis American Cities in Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction by : Robert Yeates
Download or read book American Cities in Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction written by Robert Yeates and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions of the American city in post-apocalyptic ruin permeate literary and popular fiction, across print, visual, audio and digital media. American Cities in Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction explores the prevalence of these representations in American culture, drawing from a wide range of primary and critical works from the early-twentieth century to today. Beginning with science fiction in literary magazines, before taking in radio dramas, film, video games and expansive transmedia franchises, Robert Yeates argues that post-apocalyptic representations of the American city are uniquely suited for explorations of contemporary urban issues. Examining how the post-apocalyptic American city has been repeatedly adapted and repurposed to new and developing media over the last century, this book reveals that the content and form of such texts work together to create vivid and immersive fictional spaces in ways that would otherwise not be possible. Chapters present media-specific analyses of these texts, situating them within their historical contexts and the broader history of representations of urban ruins in American fiction. Original in its scope and cross-media approach, American Cities in Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction both illuminates little-studied texts and provides provocative new readings of familiar works such as Blade Runner and The Walking Dead, placing them within the larger historical context of imaginings of the American city in ruins.

Book Synopsis Apocalyptic Dread by : Kirsten Moana Thompson
Download or read book Apocalyptic Dread written by Kirsten Moana Thompson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Apocalyptic Dread, Kirsten Moana Thompson examines how fears and anxieties about the future are reflected in recent American cinema. Through close readings of such films as Cape Fear, Candyman, Dolores Claiborne, Se7en, Signs, and War of the Worlds, Thompson argues that a longstanding American apocalyptic tradition permeates our popular culture, spreading from science-fiction and disaster films into horror, crime, and melodrama. Drawing upon Kierkegaard's notion of dread—that is, a fundamental anxiety and ambivalence about existential choice and the future—Thompson suggests that the apocalyptic dread revealed in these films, and its guiding tropes of violence, retribution, and renewal, also reveal deep-seated anxieties about historical fragmentation and change, anxieties that are in turn displaced onto each film's particular "monster," whether human, demonic, or eschatological.
