The great, bony knuckle of his knee-joint lay hard at my back, and once or twice, in moving, I touched unintentionally the long gray beard, which hung almost to his waist. I felt his lean leg stiffening behind me as the president Of the Christian College talked on. A question burst from him at last. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Is Christianity Christian? But the war is on and we must make the best of it. No matter what were the causes leading up to it nor what precipitated it, the outcome must now be made to serve some human end for good. It must be fought out with that purpose always in view. These are momentous times, pregnant with great possibilities for good or evil to the human race depending upon the course we pursue in this world crisis. The history of the past should be a monitor to guide our movements in the way we should go. If we take a wrong course it will be with our eyes wide open. Babylon, medo-persia, Greece and Rome, as universal empires, have gone the way of the na. Tions that forget God, and we, with others, have come upon the world stage of action. Whether we will continue or whether we will share their fate will depend upon the extent to which we profit by their example. If we would continue as a nation, we must eliminate the disintegrating influences from our economic system that crumbled these nations of the past to decay. One after another, as they grew powerful, became corrupt and op pressive. Grandeur and extravagance compelled extortion, and the inevitable sequence, poverty and starvation. Hardship and inequality bred dissen tion, disaffection and revolution. Ruination was the result. The same thing occurred over and over and, looking back, we say, history repeats itself, and so it did and always will so long as we allow the same influences to have sway. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Is Christ The aim of this handbook is to present in a short, popular form the substance of what has been written in recent years on the central subject of Christianity the Person and Work of Christ. It is intended to pro vide materials for answering a question which has often been raised of late, What is Christianity? For some time past there have been clear indications that the question of the Personality of Jesus Christ is being re examined and re-considered, and that once again it has become in a very definite way the center of oppo sition to Christianity. It is hoped that this summary of the Christian position as stated by its leading modern exponents will prove of service to theological students and younger clergy, as well as to the men and women in our churches who are brought face to face with va rions attacks on the Christian faith. A bibliography of the best works is appended, and the present manual is little more than the substance of these in outline for general use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Christ I shall admit that Mr. Inge's attack, and especially a remark in which he suggested that we upheld a formal orthodoxy based on extreme scepticism, drew from me the lecture that holds the eighth place in this volume. That lecture throughout, and the ninth in part, go beyond the general subject proposed for consideration. But to confine oneself too rigidly to that subject is to court misunderstanding. My pur pose is the exact opposite of that which Mr. Inge attributed to me when he condemned a sharp sever ance between the object of faith and the world of physical phenomena. But the concentration of faith and science on one object - one Person - cannot be safely efl'ected without the most careful distinction of the two methods. Otherwise the Christian faith will either be reduced to an acquaintance, more or less intimate, with certain events that happened some centuries ago - a sort of historical knowledge tinged with emotion - or shrivel into an acceptance of formal propositions defiant of reality. It astonished me a little to find myself accused of wishing to base formal orthodoxy on scepticism - or indeed on any thing else. Mr. Inge must have seen Mambrino's helmet flashing in the sun. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Britons Many persons entertain vague notions regarding the introduction of Christianity among the Britons. Some imagine that the British Isles were visited by one of the Apostles of our Lord. Others, that missionaries went from Gaul. While not a few look upon St. Augustine as the great missionary to the Britons, and suppose that little was done for their conversion before he landed on their shores. On the contrary, as we propose to shoAv, Christianity had a foothold in Britain some 400 years before St. Augustines day and continued to hold its ground imder the same auspices The Roman Catholic Church for more than 900 years after his arrival. In order to give the historic facts their true setting, we have hastily sketched the progress of the Christian Churches from the end of the first century to the beginning of the twentieth. From the time when Revelation ceased and the Bible became a completed book, to the time when it speaks in 456 tongues to the nations of the world in accents that proclaim its Divine origin. Presenting the subject from an interdenominational view point, it aims to awaken an interest for the church and'the cause of Christ, and to exert an infin ence in favor of primitive Christian piety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Christianity: Or Old Truths Restated It has long been a cherished hope of the author that he might be able to state the great essential doctrines of the common salvation - that is, the saving truths of the gospel - in such form as would commend them to the judgment and the cordial acceptation of God's chil dren in all evangelical denominations. This volume is the contribution of a Presbyterian to that wider Christian ity of the ancient past, and also of the future, in which it is hoped all evangelical Christians will ere long stand nearer together than they now stand, because they will learn to look less at their points of difference and more at the great principles of their common salvation. What the world needs is a living Christianity, and the Church can render it no better service than by proclaiming anew those old truths which are vital and saving. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grounds of Christian Belief IN this little volume I have sought to set forth the foundations and meaning of the Christian Faith in a way that will com mend itself to men and women of the present day. A little book on simple lines will serve a useful purpose if it meets some of the difficulties of those who, though keenly interested in the things that count, might turn away sorrowing from a ponderous work. I have stated my aim in the hope that the readers for whom it is designed may not confuse my efforts with those of others whose writings they might fear would prove too exacting. It is generally recognized that a gulf exists between the knowledge of the real masters of contemporary Thought and that of readers of ordinary or even of unusual education, who, about the matters which in the last issue are alone worthy of sustained consideration, ask: Are these things so P If this little book can in any way help to bridge that gulf, it will meet an acknowledged need. Gordon, in manuscript. He urged its immediate publication, and consented to write an introduction to its pages. Before the closing chapters were completed he had passed away from his useful life. On this account his name has no connection with the book, further than this grateful acknowledgment of his encouraging words. The learned Dr. Harnack, in his History of Dogma, when speaking of the Christian's faith in God as the father of Jesus Christ, makes the following comprehensive statement: So far as this God is believed to be the omnipotent Lord of heaven and earth, the Christian religion includes a knowledge of God, of the world, and of the purpose of created things. These three spheres, then, are the proper objects of our contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the Nineteenth Century From God; the other is at once formal and material, pro A csode from man, and is of the earth. What is achieved through the Spirit may be done by one church, but is the common possession and glory of all the Churches what is performed in the weakness and imperfection of the human conditions is, and remains, the church's own, evidence of the incomplete subordination of the society on earth to the Lord in heaven. The extraordinary thing is, not that the Churches have so often fatally erred and disastrously failed in duty, but that they have been able, in spite of their errors and failures, so far to obey the Christ, and to render so much service to man. The question has been raised in some quarters as to whether religion is dogma or life. In fact, our religion in the last reduction is neither dogma nor life; it is a Way from sin into the Kingdom of God. Its bed-rock is truth, its pavement is character, its destination is eternal life. It is a plain Way; as indicated in the prophecy, A highway Shall be there and a way, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the wayfaring man, though a fool.
